Vellum is arguably one of the most beautiful binding materials in use, and at the same time one of the least used in modern design bindings. While it is often used in limp bindings, its use “over hard boards” has been much more limited. A study of the bookbinding literature reveals it being covered in-depth to a larger degree in German language trade manuals than in English. This could explain their seemingly greater popularity in Germany, as evidenced by reproductions in exhibition catalogs and other publications. With a decline in traditional training opportunities, it is becoming increasing difficult to find exposure to this technique. As a material, vellum has many wonderful characteristics. It is translucent, can be made transparent, is available dyed or veiney, and exceedingly well wearing. Its major drawback is its hygroscopic nature, causing it to stretch as it absorbs water and to shrink as it dries. In dry conditions this will cause the boards to warp strongly. This, perhaps more than anything else, has discouraged binders from working with this wonderful material. This article describes how to complete a binding using this technique

    The prospects of experimental detection of CPCP violation at e+e−e^+e^- and pp/pp‟pp/p\overline{p} colliders are reviewed. After a general discussion on the quantities which can measure CPCP violation and on the implications of the CPTCPT theorem, various possibilities of measuring CPCP violation arising outside the standard model are taken up. CPCP violation in leptonic processes, especially polarization effects in e+e−→l+l−e^+e^-\rightarrow l^+l^- are discussed next. CPCP violation in tt‟t\overline{t} and W+W−W^+W^- production and decay is also described.     Weak dipole moment of τ\tau in e+e−e^+e^- collisions with longitudinally polarized electrons

    It is pointed out that certain CP-odd momentum correlations in the production and subsequent decay of tau pairs in e+e−e^+e^- collisions get enhanced when the e−e^- is longitudinally polarized. Analytic expressions for these correlations are obtained for the single-pion decay mode of τ\tau when τ+τ−\tau^+\tau^- have a ``weak" dipole form factor (WDFF) coupling to ZZ . For e+e−e^+e^- collisions at the ZZ peak, a sensitivity of about 1-5×10−17\times 10^{-17}\mbox{ee cm} for the τ\tau WDFF can be reached using a {\em single} τ+τ−\tau^+\tau^- decay channel, with 106 Z10^6\, Z's likely to be available at the SLC at Stanford with e−e^- polarization of 62\%-75\%.Comment: 9 pages, Latex, PRL-TH-93/17 (Revised

    A Novel Approach to the Common Due-Date Problem on Single and Parallel Machines

    This paper presents a novel idea for the general case of the Common Due-Date (CDD) scheduling problem. The problem is about scheduling a certain number of jobs on a single or parallel machines where all the jobs possess different processing times but a common due-date. The objective of the problem is to minimize the total penalty incurred due to earliness or tardiness of the job completions. This work presents exact polynomial algorithms for optimizing a given job sequence for single and identical parallel machines with the run-time complexities of O(nlog⁥n)O(n \log n) for both cases, where nn is the number of jobs. Besides, we show that our approach for the parallel machine case is also suitable for non-identical parallel machines. We prove the optimality for the single machine case and the runtime complexities of both. Henceforth, we extend our approach to one particular dynamic case of the CDD and conclude the chapter with our results for the benchmark instances provided in the OR-library.Comment: Book Chapter 22 page

    Climatology of Mid-latitude Ionospheric Disturbances from the Very Large Array Low-frequency Sky Survey

    The results of a climatological study of ionospheric disturbances derived from observations of cosmic sources from the Very Large Array (VLA) Low-frequency Sky Survey (VLSS) are presented. We have used the ionospheric corrections applied to the 74 MHz interferometric data within the VLSS imaging process to obtain fluctuation spectra for the total electron content (TEC) gradient on spatial scales from a few to hundreds of kilometers and temporal scales from less than one minute to nearly an hour. The observations sample nearly all times of day and all seasons. They also span latitudes and longitudes from 28 deg. N to 40 deg. N and 95 deg. W to 114 deg. W, respectively. We have binned and averaged the fluctuation spectra according to time of day, season, and geomagnetic (Kp index) and solar (F10.7) activity. These spectra provide a detailed, multi-scale account of seasonal and intraday variations in ionospheric activity with wavelike structures detected at wavelengths between about 35 and 250 km. In some cases, trends between spectral power and Kp index and/or F10.7 are also apparent. In addition, the VLSS observations allow for measurements of the turbulent power spectrum down to periods of 40 seconds (scales of ~0.4 km at the height of the E-region). While the level of turbulent activity does not appear to have a strong dependence on either Kp index or F10.7, it does appear to be more pronounced during the winter daytime, summer nighttime, and near dusk during the spring.Comment: accepted for publication in Radio Scienc

    Measurement of the τ\tau electric dipole moment using longitudinal polarization of e+e−e^+e^- beams

    Certain CP-odd momentum correlations in the production and subsequent decay of τ\tau pairs in e+e−e^+ e^- collisions are enhanced significantly when the e+e^+ and e−e^- beams are longitudinally polarized. These may be used to probe the real and imaginary parts of dÏ„Îłd_\tau^\gamma, the electric dipole moment of the τ\tau. Closed-form expressions for these ``vector correlations'' and the standard deviation of the operators defining them due to standard model interactions are presented for the two-body final states of τ\tau decays. If 42\% average polarization of each beam is achieved, as proposed for the tau-charm factories, with equal integrated luminosities for each sign of polarization and a total yield of 2⋅1072\cdot 10^7 τ+τ−\tau^+ \tau^- pairs, it is possible to attain sensitivities for ∣ΎRedÏ„ÎłâˆŁ\vert\delta {\rm Re} d_{\tau}^{\gamma}\vert of 8⋅10−198\cdot 10^{-19}, 1⋅10−191\cdot 10^{-19}, 1⋅10−191\cdot 10^{-19} ee cm respectively and for ∣ΎImdÏ„ÎłâˆŁ\vert\delta {\rm Im} d_{\tau}^{\gamma}\vert of 4⋅10−144\cdot 10^{-14}, 6⋅10−156\cdot 10^{-15}, 5⋅10−165\cdot 10^{-16} ee cm respectively at the three operating center-of-mass energies of 3.67, 4.25 and 10.58 GeV. These bounds emerge when the effects of a posible weak dipole form factor dτZd_\tau^Z are negligible as is the case when it is of the same order of magnitude as dÏ„Îłd_\tau^\gamma. Furthermore, in such a polarization experiment where different polarizations are possible, a model-independent disentangling of their individual effects is possible, and a technique to achieve this is described. A strong longitudinal polarization physics programme at the tau-charm factory appears warranted.Comment: 30 pages, latex, no figure

    Large Electric Dipole Moments of Heavy Leptons

    In many models of CP violation, the electric dipole moments (EDMs) of leptons scale as the cube of the lepton mass. In these models, the EDM of a 100 GeV heavy lepton would be a billion times greater than that of the muon, and could be as large as a 0.01 e-fermi. In other models, in which the heavy leptons have different properties from the lighter generations, a similarly large EDM can be obtained. A large EDM could dominate the electromagnetic properties of heavy leptons. The angular distribution and production cross-section of both charged and neutral heavy leptons with large dipole moments is calculated and discussed. The interesting possibility that a heavy neutrino with a large EDM could leave an ionization track in a drift chamber is investigated.Comment: Discussion expanded extensively to include model-dependence of results.
