A mixture containing glass 70 to 95 and BN or B4C powder (0.1-10 microns) 5 to 30 vol. % is used as a secondary pressure medium in hot isostatic pressing of ceramics. Thus, Pyrex beads were mixed with 15% vol. BN powder (average diameter 2 microns), fused at 1400 deg for 2 h, cooled, crushed, and put into a graphite crucible. A Si3N4 sintered body was embedded in the powder, heated in vacuum at 1200 deg for 2 h, treated in a hot isostatic press furnace at 1700 deg and 1000 atm. for 1 h, and cooled to give a Si3N4 ceramic. It was easily separated from the crucible

Declining Rotation Curve and Brown Dwarf MACHOs

If the Galactic rotation speed at the Solar circle is ∼200\sim 200 km s−1^{-1} or smaller, which is supported by several recent studies, the rotation curve of the Galaxy could be declining in the outermost region. Motivated by this, we investigate the effect of such declining rotation curve on the estimate of the MACHO mass and the fractional contribution of the MACHOs to the Galactic dark halo. Using Hernquist and Plummer halo models instead of the standard halo model, we find that the MACHO mass could be significantly smaller than that for the standard halo case. In particular, there exists a certain set of halo parameters for which the MACHO mass is 0.1M⊙M_\odot or less and at the same time the MACHO contribution to the total mass of the halo is almost 100 %. This result indicates that a halo which consists solely of brown dwarfs can be consistent with both of the observed microlensing properties and the constraints from the rotation curve, provided the outer rotation curve is indeed declining.Comment: 8 pages and 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

Population structure of Pacific yellowfin tuna

ENGLISH: The population structure and production of Pacific yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares, were examined by studying most of the basic data available on stock assessment, as well as other data, for the period 1965 to 1972. The data were obtained mainly from the Japanese longline fishery in the Pacific Ocean east of about 1200E and from the purse-seine fishery in the eastern Pacific east of about 140oW. Data from genetic studies of subpopulations were not used due to their preliminary nature. It was concluded that the concept of "semi-independent" subpopulations proposed by Kamimura and Honma (1963) and Royce (1964) defines the population structure of Pacific yellowfin. At least three stocks (i.e. western, central and eastern), relatively independent of each other, are thought to exist, but the actual number and location of subpopulations is still unclear. Possible north-south separations, indicated to some extent by genetic studies and tagging, could be neither substantiated nor rejected on the basis of this study. Finally, unless some major change in the fishing technology occurs, it is doubtful if any significant sustainable increase in yellowfin production from the Pacific is possible. The greatest potential for increase, if any, appears to be based on changing the size structure of yellowfin in the catch from the central Pacific. (PDF contains 169 pages.

CO Observations of Luminous IR Galaxies at Intermediate Redshift

We present new measurement of 12^{12}CO(J=1−0J=1-0) emission from 16 luminous infrared galaxies (LIGs) at intermediate redshift (cz∼10,000−50,000kms−1cz \sim 10,000 - 50,000 {\rm km s^{-1}}). These new data were selected by isolated and normal morphology. The CO observations were performed using the NRO 45-m telescope. Comparison of the CO and dust properties of the new result with those from other CO measurements revealed characteristics of this sample: (1) It is the deepest CO observations of IRAS galaxies at intermediate redshift without strong interaction features. (2) It has typical properties of normal IRAS galaxies in terms of star-formation efficiency, color-color diagrams and galactic nuclear activity. (3) It has smaller gas-to-dust ratio than normal IRAS galaxies. This can be explained by two-component dust model, and our sample consists of most of warm dust.Comment: To appear in PASJ, text 9 pages, 5 tables, and 12 figure

X-ray and Radio Follow-up Observations of High-Redshift Blazar Candidates in the Fermi-LAT Unassociated Source Population

We report on the results of X-ray and radio follow-up observations of two GeV gamma-ray sources 2FGL J0923.5+1508 and 2FGL J1502.1+5548, selected as candidates for high-redshift blazars from unassociated sources in the {\it Fermi} Large Area Telescope Second Source Catalog. We utilize the Suzaku satellite and the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) telescopes for X-ray and radio observations, respectively. For 2FGL J0923.5+1508, a possible radio counterpart NVSS J092357+150518 is found at 1.4 GHz from an existing catalog, but we do not detect any X-ray emission from it and derive a flux upper limit F2−8keV<F_{\rm 2-8 keV} < 1.37 ×\times 10−14^{-14} erg cm−2^{-2} s−1^{-1}. Radio observations at 6.7 GHz also result in an upper limit of S6.7GHzS_{\rm 6.7 GHz} << 19 mJy, implying a steep radio spectrum that is not expected for a blazar. On the other hand, we detect X-rays from NVSS J150229+555204, the potential 1.4 GHz radio counterpart of 2FGL J1502.1+5548. The X-ray spectrum can be fitted with an absorbed power-law model with a photon index γ\gamma=1.8−0.2+0.3^{+0.3}_{-0.2} and the unabsorbed flux is F2−8keVF_{\rm 2-8 keV}=4.3−1.0+1.1^{+1.1}_{-1.0} ×\times 10−14^{-14} erg cm−2^{-2} s−1^{-1}. Moreover, we detect unresolved radio emission at 6.7 GHz with flux S6.7GHzS_{\rm 6.7 GHz}=30.1 mJy, indicating a compact, flat-spectrum radio source. If NVSS J150229+555204 is indeed associated with 2FGL J1502.1+5548, we find that its multiwavelength spectrum is consistent with a blazar at redshift z∼3−4z \sim 3-4.Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in Ap

    Dp-branes, NS5-branes and U-duality from nonabelian (2,0) theory with Lie 3-algebra

We derive the super Yang-Mills action of Dp-branes on a torus T^{p-4} from the nonabelian (2,0) theory with Lie 3-algebra. Our realization is based on Lie 3-algebra with pairs of Lorentzian metric generators. The resultant theory then has negative norm modes, but it results in a unitary theory by setting VEV's of these modes. This procedure corresponds to the torus compactification, therefore by taking a transformation which is equivalent to T-duality, the Dp-brane action is obtained. We also study type IIA/IIB NS5-brane and Kaluza-Klein monopole systems by taking other VEV assignments. Such various compactifications can be realized in the nonabelian (2,0) theory, since both longitudinal and transverse directions can be compactified, which is different from the BLG theory. We finally discuss U-duality among these branes, and show that most of the moduli parameters in U-duality group are recovered. Especially in D5-brane case, the whole U-duality relation is properly reproduced.Comment: 1+26 page

Criterion for Generation of Winds from Magnetized Accretion Disks

    Get PDF
An analytic model is proposed for non-radiating accretion flows accompanied by up or down winds in a global magnetic field. Physical quantities in this model solution are written in variable-separated forms, and their radial parts are simple power law functions including one parameter for wind strength. Several, mathematically equivalent but physically different expressions of the criterion for wind generation are obtained. It is suggested also that the generation of wind is a consequence of the intervention of some mechanism that redistributes the locally available gravitational energy, and that the Bernoulli sum can be a good indicator of the existence of such mechanisms.Comment: 24 pages, 0 figures, ApJ accepte

Optical and CO Radio Observations of Poor Cluster Zwicky 1615.8+3505

The cluster Zwicky 1615.8+3505 is considered to be a dynamically young poor cluster. To investigate the morphology and star-formation activity of galaxies under the environment of a dynamically young poor cluster, we have performed V, R, and I surface photometry, optical low-resolution spectroscopy, and 12CO (J=1-0) line observations for member galaxies. Our data show that more than 90% of the observed galaxies show regular morphologies and no star-formation activities, indicating that the environment does not affect these galaxy properties. Among sixteen galaxies observed, only NGC 6104 shows a significant star-formation activity, and shows a distorted morphology, indicating a tidal interaction. This galaxy contains double knots, and only one knot possesses Seyfert activity, though the sizes and luminosities are similar to each other; we also discuss this feature.Comment: LaTeX manuscript (text.tex, use PASJ style files), four PS figures (fig[a-d].ps), and three PASJ style files. text.tex, figb.ps, and figd.ps are up-dated.
