This research compares how Chinese and American professionals visually self-present with professional profile pictures. Three studies were conducted. In Study 1, we surveyed 310 professionals in China and 215 professionals in the United States about preferred profile picture backgrounds for professional sites, such as LinkedIn and corporate webpages. Generally, Americans opted first for grey backgrounds more so than Chinese, and Chinese opted for blue and white backgrounds more so than Americans. Chinese and Americans both preferred office pictures over outdoor settings, although Chinese were more likely to choose office settings without views. In Study 2, we evaluated CEO profile pictures on corporate webpages of 100 Chinese CEOs and 100 American CEOs. Generally, Chinese CEOs project more formal, status-driven signals whereas American CEOs are more likely to display expressiveness. In Study 3, we evaluated the LinkedIn profile pictures and banners of 900 early-career finance professionals, including 300 American finance professionals, 300 Chinese finance profiles with English-language LinkedIn profiles (also referred to as cosmopolitan Chinese professionals), and 300 Chinese finance profiles with Chinese-language LinkedIn profiles (also referred to as domestic Chinese professionals). American women and cosmopolitan Chinese women are significantly more expressiveness than nearly all other groups, closely followed by Chinese domestic women and American men. Cosmopolitan Chinese men and domestic Chinese men are the least expressive. As far as professional profile pictures, we found that Chinese and American professionals tend to cluster into the following types: friendly professionals, corporate leaders, expressive leaders, casual professionals, and independents. These typologies involve various combinations of expressiveness and status displays. Each of these typologies effectively serves as a visual rhetoric of professional identity

BackgroundNon-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with first-generation epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR-TKI) almost always acquire resistance, and the development of novel techniques analyzing circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) have made it possible for liquid biopsy to detect genetic alterations from limited amount of DNA with less invasiveness. While a large amount of patients with EGFR exon 21 p.Thr790 Met (T790M) benefited from osimertinib treatment, acquired resistance to osimertinb has subsequently become a growing challenge.MethodsWe performed tissue and liquid rebiopsy on 50 patients with EGFR-mutant NSCLC who acquired resistance to first-generation EGFR-TKIs. Plasma samples underwent droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) and next-generation sequencing (NGS) examinations. Corresponding tissue samples underwent NGS and Cobas® EGFR Mutation Test v2 (Cobas) examinations.ResultsOf the 50 patients evaluated, the mutation detection rates of liquid biopsy group and tissue biopsy group demonstrated no significant differences (41/48, 85.4% vs. 44/48, 91.7%; OR=0.53, 95% CI=0.15 to 1.95). Overall concordance, defined as the proportion of patients for whom at least one identical genomic alteration was identified in both tissue and plasma, was 78.3% (36/46, 95% CI=0.39 to 2.69). Moreover, our results showed that almost half of the patients (46%, 23/50) resistant to first-generation EGFR-TKI harbored p.Thr790 Met (T790M) mutation. 82.6% (19/23) of the T790M positive patients were analyzed by liquid biopsy and 60.9% (14/23) by tumor tissue sequencing. Meanwhile, a wide range of uncommon mutations was detected, and novel mechanisms of osimertinib resistance were discovered. In addition, 16.7% (2/12) of the T790M positive patients with either TP53 R237C or KRAS G12V failed to benefit from the subsequent osimertinib treatment.ConclusionOur results emphasized that liquid biopsy is applicable to analyze the drug resistance mechanisms of NSCLC patients treated with EGFR-TKIs. Moreover, we discovered two uncommon mutations, TP53 R273C and KRAS G12V, which attenuates the effectiveness of osimertinib

The hypersonic flow field around a blunt cone was simulated using a high-order finite difference method. Fast acoustic waves, slow acoustic waves, entropy waves, and vortical waves were introduced into the free-stream to determine the influence of a free-stream with disturbances on the hypersonic flow field and boundary layer. The effect of disturbance type on the evolution of perturbations in the hypersonic boundary layer was analyzed. Fast Fourier Transform was adopted to analyze the effect of the disturbance type on the evolution of different modes in the boundary layer. A roughness element was introduced into the flow field to reveal the impact of the roughness element on hypersonic boundary layer receptivity. The results showed that a free-stream with disturbances affected the hypersonic flow field and boundary layer; acoustic waves had the greatest influence. The impact of slow acoustic waves on the flow field was mainly concentrated in the region between the shock and the boundary layer, whereas the influence of fast acoustic waves was mainly concentrated in the boundary layer. Multi-mode perturbations formed in the boundary layer were caused by the free-stream with disturbances, wherein the fundamental mode was the dominant mode of the perturbations in the boundary layer caused by fast acoustic waves, entropy waves, and vortical waves. The dominant modes of the perturbations in the boundary layer caused by slow acoustic waves were both the fundamental mode and the second harmonic mode. The roughness element changed the propagation process of different modes of perturbations in the boundary layer. In the downstream region of the roughness element, perturbations in the boundary layer caused by the slow acoustic waves had the greatest influence. The second harmonic mode in the boundary layer was significantly suppressed, and the fundamental mode became the dominant mode. The effects of fast acoustic waves and entropy waves on the boundary layer receptivity were similar, except the amplitude of the perturbations in the boundary layer caused by the fast acoustic waves was larger

Bevacizumab treatment for radiation brain necrosis: mechanism, efficacy and issues

Abstract Vascular damage is followed by vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression at high levels, which is an important mechanism forradiation brain necrosis development. Bevacizumab alleviates brain edema symptoms caused by radiation brain necrosis through inhibiting VEGF and acting on vascular tissue around the brain necrosis area. Many studies have confirmed that bevacizumab effectively relieves symptoms caused by brain necrosis, improves patients’ Karnofsky performance status (KPS) scores and brain necrosis imaging. However, necrosis is irreversible, and hypoxia and ischemia localized in the brain necrosis area may easily lead to radiation brain necrosis recurrence after bevacizumab is discontinued. Further studies are necessary to investigate brain necrosis diagnoses, bevacizumab indications, and the optimal mode of administration, bevacizumab resistance and necrosis with a residual or recurrent tumor

Activated carbon (AC) is widely utilized in water treatment, gas adsorption, and purification as well as the protection of environment due to the characteristics of prominent catalytic and adsorbent effect. The heating performances are therefore of significant importance for the further applications. The main objective of this study was therefore to detail the heating performance of activated carbon in microwave field, and the factors affecting the heating performance were also explored. In this study, the heating performance of AC as affected by microwave power (400, 450, 500, 550, and 600 W), feeding load (5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 g), and reactor volume (50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 mL) were detailed and reported. The results showed that when the microwave powers were 400, 450, 500, 550, and 600 W, the temperatures of AC increased to the desired value (about 200 °C) within 90, 85, 70, 60, and 35 s with average heating rates of 2.0, 2.2, 2.8, 3.0, and 5.9 °C/s, respectively. When the feeding loads were 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 g, the temperatures of AC increased to desired temperature within 40, 70, 60, 50, and 50 s with average heating rates of 4.2, 2.8, 3.1, 3.50, and 3.55 °C/s, respectively. When the reactor volumes were 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 mL, the temperatures of AC increased to the desired temperature within 25, 60, 70, 70, and 160 s with average heating rates of 7.6, 3.3, 2.8, 2.6, and 1.2 °C/s, respectively. In general, the faster heating rate of activated carbon was achieved at higher microwave power, more feeding load, and smaller reactor volume. Fitting formulae were given to predict the transient temperatures of AC in the microwave field, and the relative errors were in the ranges of −15.4~12.4%, −15.4~13.5% and −18.7~12.4% at different microwave powers, feeding loads, and reactor volumes, respectively

Effect of a Roughness Element on the Receptivity of a Hypersonic Boundary Layer over a Blunt Cone Due to Pulse Entropy Disturbance with a Single Frequency

A high-order finite difference method was used to simulate the hypersonic flow field over a blunt cone with different height roughness elements. The unsteady flow field induced by pulse disturbances was analyzed and compared with that under continuous disturbances. The temporal and spatial evolution characteristics of disturbances in the boundary layer were investigated and the propagation of different disturbance modes in the boundary layer was researched through the fast Fourier transform (FFT) method. The effect of the roughness element on the receptivity characteristic of the hypersonic boundary layer under pulse entropy disturbances was explored. The results showed that the different mode disturbances near roughness in the boundary layer were enlarged in the upstream half of the roughness element and suppressed in the downstream half. However, the effect of roughness weakened gradually as the disturbance frequency increased in the boundary layer. A phenomenon of mode competition in the downstream region of the roughness element exited. As the disturbances propagated downstream, the fundamental mode gradually became the dominant mode. A certain promotion effect on the mode competition was induced by the roughness element and the effect was enhanced with the increase in the roughness element height
