Anticholinesterase Therapy for Patients with Ophthalmoplegia Following Snake Bites: Report of Two Cases
Although ophthalmoplegia following snake bites is not indicative of a serious neurotoxic complication, symptoms of diplopia, dizziness and ocular discomfort can be emotionally devastating for patients. The authors experienced two cases of ophthalmoplegia following snake bites in Korea. The patients complained of diplopia that had developed several hours after the snake bites. The diplopia did not improve with antivenom treatment, but resolved completely after several injections of neostigmine
Two novel mutations of Wiskott–Aldrich syndrome: the molecular prediction of interaction between the mutated WASP L101P with WASP-interacting protein by molecular modeling
AbstractWiskott–Aldrich syndrome (WAS) is an X-linked disorder characterized by eczema, thrombocytopenia and increased susceptibility of infections, with mutations of the WAS gene being responsible for WAS and X-linked thrombocytopenia. Herein, two novel mutations of WAS at T336C on exon 3, and at 1326–1329, a G deletion on exon 10, resulting in L101P missense mutation and frameshift mutation 444 stop, respectively, are reported. The affected patients with either mutation showed severe suppression of WAS protein (WASP) levels, T cell proliferation, and CFSE-labeled T cells division. Because WASP L101 have not shown direct nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) contact with the WASP-interacting protein (WIP) in NMR spectroscopy, molecular modeling was performed to evaluate the molecular effect of WASP P101 to WIP peptide. It is presumed that P101 induced a conformational change in the Q99 residue of WASP and made the side chain of Q99 move away from the WIP peptide, resulting in disruption of the hydrogen bond between Q99 WASP and Y475 WIP. A possible model for the molecular pathogenesis of WAS has been proposed by analyzing the interactions of WASP and WIP using a molecular modeling study
Synergistic antitumor immune response mediated by paclitaxel-conjugated nanohybrid oncolytic adenovirus with dendritic cell therapy
Dendritic cell (DC)-based vaccines have emerged as a promising strategy in cancer immunotherapy due to low toxicity. However, the therapeutic efficacy of DC as a monotherapy is insufficient due to highly immunosuppressive tumor environment. To address these limitations of DC as immunotherapeutic agent, we have developed a polymeric nanocomplex incorporating (1) oncolytic adenovirus (oAd) co-expressing interleukin (IL)-12 and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and (2) arginine-grafted bioreducible polymer with PEGylated paclitaxel (APP) to restore antitumor immune surveillance function in tumor milieu and potentiate immunostimulatory attributes of DC vaccine. Nanohybrid complex (oAd/APP) in combination with DC (oAd/APP+DC) induced superior expression level of antitumor cytokines (IL-12, GM-CSF, and interferon gamma) than either oAd/APP or DC monotherapy in tumor tissues, thus resulting in superior intratumoral infiltration of both endogenous and exogenous DCs. Furthermore, oAd/APP+DC treatment led superior migration of DC to secondary lymphoid organs, such as draining lymph nodes and spleen, in comparison with either monotherapy. Superior migration profile of DCs in oAd/APP+DC treatment group resulted in more prolific activation of tumor-specific T cells in these lymphoid organs and greater intratumoral infiltration of T cells. Additionally, oAd/APP+DC treatment led to lower subset of tumor infiltrating lymphocytes and splenocytes being immunosuppressive regulatory T cells than any other treatment groups. Collectively, oAd/APP+DC led to superior induction of antitumor immune response and amelioration of immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment to elicit potent tumor growth inhibition than either monotherapy
Video-kMaX: A Simple Unified Approach for Online and Near-Online Video Panoptic Segmentation
Video Panoptic Segmentation (VPS) aims to achieve comprehensive pixel-level
scene understanding by segmenting all pixels and associating objects in a
video. Current solutions can be categorized into online and near-online
approaches. Evolving over the time, each category has its own specialized
designs, making it nontrivial to adapt models between different categories. To
alleviate the discrepancy, in this work, we propose a unified approach for
online and near-online VPS. The meta architecture of the proposed Video-kMaX
consists of two components: within clip segmenter (for clip-level segmentation)
and cross-clip associater (for association beyond clips). We propose clip-kMaX
(clip k-means mask transformer) and HiLA-MB (Hierarchical Location-Aware Memory
Buffer) to instantiate the segmenter and associater, respectively. Our general
formulation includes the online scenario as a special case by adopting clip
length of one. Without bells and whistles, Video-kMaX sets a new
state-of-the-art on KITTI-STEP and VIPSeg for video panoptic segmentation, and
VSPW for video semantic segmentation. Code will be made publicly available
Metaheuristic Optimization Techniques for an Electromagnetic Multilayer Radome Design
In this study, an effective method for designing an electromagnetic multilayer radome is introduced. This method is achieved by using ant colony optimization for a continuous domain in the transmission coefficient maximization with stability for a wide angle of incidence in both perpendicular and parallel polarizations in specific X- and Ku-bands. To obtain the optimized parameter for a C-sandwich radome, particle swarm optimization algorithm is operated to give a clear comparison on the effectiveness of ant colony optimization for a continuous domain. The qualification of an optimized multilayer radome is also compared with an effective solid radome type in transmitted power stability and presented in this research
Analysis of the Relationship between Cerebellar Volume and Psychological Parameters in 20s Male Adults
AbstractThis study measured the cerebellar volume of normal male adults in 20s with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and analysed the relationship between cerebellar volume and various psychological parameters. The cerebellar volume of 58 males (mean age, 24.0-2.8 years) was measured using MRI. The Symptom Checklist-90-R (SCL-90-R) and the Component of Type A Behavior tests were performed. Using linear regression analysis, the relationship between cerebellar volume and psychological parameters was analysed. As phobic anxiety and ambition increased, cerebellar volume of normal male subjects in 20s decreased. This study showed that for even normal male adults, there exists a possible relationship between various psychological parameters and cerebellar volume
