    Social and emotional learning in a classroom: Language arts and literacy teachers’ perceptions and practices in South Korea and the United States

    The purpose of this study is to understand how language arts and literacy teachers of South Korea and the United States of America (USA) perceive the importance of social and emotional learning (SEL), and in what ways these teachers support the development of students’ social and emotional skills. As a comparative inquiry, the study explores teacher perceptions and practices regarding an integrated approach of SEL and literacy instruction. Language arts and literacy teachers were recruited to participate in the survey. The findings show that the participants valued the use of SEL strategies and activities to support students’ social and emotional development. Specifically, the participants responded they incorporate academic and nonacademic strategies for students to practice social-emotional skills in a classroom. Although specific SEL strategies vary, teachers in both countries agree on the importance of SEL and appraise its positive impacts on students and the classroom environment. This study is meaningful to inform future research efforts that explore an integrated approach of SEL and literacy from a cross-cultural perspective

    Coupling of Josephson current qubits using a connecting loop

    We propose a coupling scheme for the three-Josephson junction qubits which uses a connecting loop, but not mutual inductance. Present scheme offers the advantages of a large and tunable level splitting in implementing the controlled-NOT (CNOT) operation. We calculate the switching probabilities of the coupled qubits in the CNOT operations and demonstrate that present CNOT gate can meet the criteria for the fault-tolerant quantum computing. We obtain the coupling strength as a function of the coupling energy of the Josephson junction and the length of the connecting loop which varies with selecting two qubits from the scalable design.Comment: 5 pages with updates, version to appear in Phys.     The Case Study for the Legislation of Criminal Laws in the Early Joseon Dynasty

    In this paper, I discuss the legislation of criminal laws in the early Joseon dynasty through a case study. It was the homicide case between two brothers in 1478 (the 9th year of King Seongjongs reign). Despite the simplicity of the case, almost 40 higher officials in the royal court participated in the discussion of the case. The reason why the higher officials took the case seriously was that the older brother was a son by a concubine and the younger was a son by the legal wife. There was a deep and rigorous distinction between sons by the legal wife and sons by concubines in the Joseon dynasty. The higher officials thought that the social status order by birth legitimacy was not reflected adequately in The Great Ming Code, the basic criminal code in the Joseon dynasty. They reinterpreted the case from various perspectives in order to establish the firm social status order between sons by the legal wife and sons by concubines. Not only the number of higher officials participating in the discussion, but also the different legal opinions presented in the royal presence exemplify the process and the reasoning of making new criminal laws in the early Joseon dynasty

    Thesis(Master) --KDI School:Master of Development Policy,2015This study aims to assess the impact of institutional transformation of microfinance institutions (MFIs) on poverty alleviation and financial sustainability, using cross-country and panel data sets from the Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX) Market and the World Bank data. The analysis was conducted using pooled OLS with two-stage least squares (2SLS) and random effects regressions. In order to achieve this aim, the analysis was undertaken with respect to two criteria. On one hand, it examines whether the impact of transforming the legal status of MFIs from non-profits to for-profits on poverty alleviation; and on the other hand, from unregulated non-profits to regulated for-profits with regards to the dual missions: poverty reduction and financial sustainability. The results of the analysis suggest that, taking into account endogeneity with loans of MFIs, a country with higher loans from non-profits tends to have larger effects on reducing poverty than that of for-profits. With respect to regulation on MFIs, the net impact of unregulated non-profits on poverty alleviation is still larger than that of regulated for-profits. Especially, only the unregulated for-profits have a significant and positive impact on improving self-sustainability. This evidence implies that since unregulated non-profit MFIs, compared to regulated for-profit MFIs, more effectively reduce poverty with financially stable operation, the institutional transformation of MFIs should be carefully conducted in order to achieve a higher social impact of serving the poorest of the poor at a financially sustainable manner, helping them to overcome poverty.masterpublishedDaehong KIM

    Turbulent Flow and Transport Modeling by Long Waves and Currents

    This dissertation presents models for turbulent flow and transport by currents and long waves in large domain. From the Navier-Stokes equations, a fully nonlinear depth-integrated equation model for weakly dispersive, turbulent and rotational flow is derived by a perturbation approach based on long wave scaling. The same perturbation approach is applied for the derivation of a depth-integrated transport equation. As the results, coherent structures generated by the turbulence induced by the bottom friction and topography can be predicted very reasonably. The three dimensional turbulence effects are incorporated into the flow model by employing a back scatter model. The back scatter model makes it possible to predict turbulent transport: It contributes to the energy transport and the lateral turbulent diffusion through relying on the turbulent intensity, not by relying on an empirical diffusion constant. The inherent limitation of the depth-integrated transport equation, that is, the limitation for the near field prediction is recognized in the derivation and the numerical simulation. To solve the derived equation set, a highly accurate and stable finite volume scheme numerical solver is developed. Thus, the numerical solver can predict dispersive and nonlinear wave propagation with minimal error. Also, good stability is achieved enough to be applied to the dam-break flows and undular tidal bores. In addition, a robust moving boundary scheme based on simple physical conditions is presented, which can extend the applicability area of the depth-integrated models. By the comparison study with experimental data, it is expected that the numerical model can provide high confidence results for the wave and current transformations including shocks and undular bores on complex bathymetry and topography. For the accurate near field transport prediction, a three dimensional transport model in ?-coordinate coupled with the depth-integrated flow model is developed. Like the other models, this model is also intended for large domain problems, and yet efficient and accurate in the far field and near field together

    A Design and Development of the Learning Contents Management based on the Personalized Online Learning

    Teaching-learning methods are undergoing rapid transformation in terms of new information and communication technology and in accordance with onset of the 4th Industrial Revolution. The educational environment is being transformed into various forms, with examples being found not only in the existing traditional educational environment, but also in online education and blended learning. Existing online learning (LMS, LCMS) is offered in a limited contents transmission online educational environment, and has been limited but the level of support offered to a learner’s personalized learning. This study will overview existing flexible model of contents, suggest possible problems, and attempt to solve these problems. LCMS was designed and realized based on the open source Moodle platform, offering personalized contents to learners. LCMS is composed of the following 3 functions: contents registration of metadata inputted by administrator; search functionality for personalized learner contents; and personalized contents automatically being recommended to learners. As a result of the research, we made online learning environment that can provide customized learning recommendation and self - directed learning by increasing the continuity and efficiency of learning by automatically providing customized online contents to learners. Through this study, the learning of students promises to be effectively initiated by being based on available LCMS functions related to personalized educational contents in online education

    Numerical modeling to analysis the abrasion of knee joint by walking pattern

    In current studies, growing up of treatment of the knee joint damage such as arthritis, the research to prevent knee joint is under way. As knee joints could be damaged by various types of motion, one of the most influential factor of the abrasion on the knee joint is progressed by walking. It could be classified as 3 types of walking, 1. Walking plain, 2. Climbing stairs or uphill and 3. Going down. In this study, to find the damaged point of knee joint, the following ways would be used. After comparing the knee joint angle with interior and exterior movement of the knee in accordance with the joint dynamics of typical height, the walking pattern for walking up the stairs can be comprehended. It could be shown the variation of the center of rotation of knee joint. From this, the contact point which is pressed on the knee joints in accordance with each walking pattern could be derived. The numerical modeling could be made by quantifying the variety that is caused by the center of mass of knee bone. It would be expected to calculate the contact point on the knee joint through walking patterns. This numerical model is considered of the kinematics system in our knee
