ZOOpt: Toolbox for Derivative-Free Optimization
Recent advances of derivative-free optimization allow efficient approximating
the global optimal solutions of sophisticated functions, such as functions with
many local optima, non-differentiable and non-continuous functions. This
article describes the ZOOpt (https://github.com/eyounx/ZOOpt) toolbox that
provides efficient derivative-free solvers and are designed easy to use. ZOOpt
provides a Python package for single-thread optimization, and a light-weighted
distributed version with the help of the Julia language for Python described
functions. ZOOpt toolbox particularly focuses on optimization problems in
machine learning, addressing high-dimensional, noisy, and large-scale problems.
The toolbox is being maintained toward ready-to-use tool in real-world machine
learning tasks
The Top Quark Production Asymmetries and
A large forward-backward asymmetry is seen in both the top quark rapidity
distribution and in the rapidity distribution of charged leptons
from top quarks produced at the Tevatron. We study the kinematic
and dynamic aspects of the relationship of the two observables arising from the
spin correlation between the charged lepton and the top quark with different
polarization states. We emphasize the value of both measurements, and we
conclude that a new physics model which produces more right-handed than
left-handed top quarks is favored by the present data.Comment: accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter
Thermodynamic model of coherent island formation on vicinal substrate
A thermodynamic model has been proposed to address the formation of coherent island on the vicinal substrate. The morphological transition from square based island to elongated based one with various substrate misorientations is described. The initial stage of nucleation and growth process of islands in Stranski-Krastanow system is studied by taking into account the elastic deformations and the change of energy in the case of two-dimensional growth mode. The theoretical analysis shows the minimum nucleation barrier of island is on the decrease with increment of substrate misorientation, which means the nucleation of island on vicinal substrate is more favorable than that on flat substrate. By using the fitting data of experimental results done by Persichetti et al., [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 036104 (2010) and Phys. Rev. B 82, 121309(R) (2010)], we provide a meaningful explanation of the experimental observations
Economic Evaluation of Three Available Solutions for Promotion of Wind Power Integration
The limited operational flexibility of combined heat and power (CHP) units is the main cause of wind power curtailment in the thermal-electrical power system of Northern China. Pumped hydrostorage (PHS), heat storage (HS), and electric boiler (EB) are investigated as three alternative options for the promotion of wind power integration. On the basis of two linear models that determine the capacities of these three facilities required for integrating the curtailed wind power, economic evaluation in terms of investment costs and environmental benefits is presented. Analysis results show that HS requires the least investment and has a good performance of coal saving when accommodating the same amount of curtailed wind power. And EB has the greatest potential for wind power integration with the huge growth of installed capacity of wind power in the future
