Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Infectious Disease Hospitalizations in Arizona

Infectious disease (ID) hospitalizations in Arizona, a diverse population with nearly complete race/ethnicity data, were analyzed using the State Inpatient Database for 2005-2008. ID hospitalizations rates were calculated and compared by ID group, race/ethnicity, age, and sex. During 2005-2008, there were 383,597 ID hospitalizations reported in Arizona, resulting in an age-adjusted rate of 1498.1 per 100,000 persons. A range of racial/ethnic disparities in ID hospitalization rates were noted. Persons of Native American and black race/ethnicity had overall ID hospitalization rates higher than the rate for persons of white race/ethnicity; persons of Asian or Pacific Islander race/ethnicity had a lower rate. The lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) hospitalization rate was the highest rate of all ID groups, followed by cellulitis and septicemia. Persons of black and Native American race had higher LRTI hospitalization rates than persons of white race. Racial/ethnic disparities persist for ID hospitalizations in Arizona. Persons of Native American and black race/ethnicity experience high age-adjusted rates of ID hospitalization. Prevention efforts should focus on high risk race/ethnicity groups and disease groups

    Crystal structure of Li3Ga(BO3)2

    Get PDF
The crystal structure of trilithium gallium bis(orthoborate), Li3Ga(BO3)2, is isotypic with Li3Al(BO3)2 in a triclinic cell in space-group type P1. The three Li and the unique Ga atom are coordinated by four O atoms each in tetrahedra, and the two B atoms are coordinated by three O atoms in orthoborate triangles. Chains with composition [Ga2(BO3)4] 6 extend along the a axis. The Li atoms interleave these chains in tetrahedral interstices. A comparison is made between the structure model of the title compound and that of a previously reported model for a compound with the same composition [Abdullaev & Mamedov (1972). Zh. Strukt. Khim. 13, 943–946.

Knowledge of Bat Rabies and Human Exposure Among United States Cavers

We surveyed cavers who attended the National Speleological Society convention in June 2000. Fifteen percent of respondents did not consider a bat bite a risk for acquiring rabies; only 20% had received preexposure prophylaxis against the disease. An under-appreciation of the risk for rabies from bat bites may explain the preponderance of human rabies viruses caused by variant strains associated with bats in the United States

    Relative photometry of HAT-P-1b occultations

We present HST STIS observations of two occultations of the transiting exoplanet HAT-P-1b. By measuring the planet to star flux ratio near opposition, we constrain the geometric albedo of the planet, which is strongly linked to its atmospheric temperature gradient. An advantage of HAT-P-1 as a target is its binary companion ADS 16402 A, which provides an excellent photometric reference, simplifying the usual steps in removing instrumental artifacts from HST time-series photometry. We find that without this reference star, we would need to detrend the lightcurve with the time of the exposures as well as the first three powers of HST orbital phase, and this would introduce a strong bias in the results for the albedo. However, with this reference star, we only need to detrend the data with the time of the exposures to achieve the same per-point scatter, therefore we can avoid most of the bias associated with detrending. Our final result is a 2 sigma upper limit of 0.64 for the geometric albedo of HAT-P-1b between 577 and 947 nm.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, 3 table

Seismic Characterization of Fracture Rock Fabric in Mississippian Limestone, Payne County Oklahoma

    Get PDF
Fractures are pre-existing planes of weaknesses. They play a critical role in determining the production potential of reservoirs that are developed through lateral drilling and fracture stimulation, such as the Mid-Continent Mississippian limestone. Estimation of fracture density using geophysical methods, such as seismic, is desirable, but extremely challenging at the same time. Conventionally, a single seismic attribute such as amplitude or coherency has been proxy for fractures with limited success. This thesis demonstrates that multiple seismic attributes can be combined using statistical methods to yield a reliable fracture density map.Geolog

The AMC Linear Disability Score project in a population requiring residential care: psychometric properties

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Currently there is a lot of interest in the flexible framework offered by item banks for measuring patient relevant outcomes, including functional status. However, there are few item banks, which have been developed to quantify functional status, as expressed by the ability to perform activities of daily life. METHOD: This paper examines the psychometric properties of the AMC Linear Disability Score (ALDS) project item bank using an item response theory model and full information factor analysis. Data were collected from 555 respondents on a total of 160 items. RESULTS: Following the analysis, 79 items remained in the item bank. The remaining 81 items were excluded because of: difficulties in presentation (1 item); low levels of variation in response pattern (28 items); significant differences in measurement characteristics for males and females or for respondents under or over 85 years old (26 items); or lack of model fit to the data at item level (26 items). CONCLUSIONS: It is conceivable that the item bank will have different measurement characteristics for other patient or demographic populations. However, these results indicate that the ALDS item bank has sound psychometric properties for respondents in residential care settings and could form a stable base for measuring functional status in a range of situations, including the implementation of computerised adaptive testing of functional status
