    The association of sport and exercise activities with cardiovascular disease risk: The Atherosclerosis risk in Communities (ARIC) study

    Background: This study assessed the independent associations between participation in self-reported sport and exercise activities and incident cardiovascular disease (CVD). Methods: Data were from 13,204 participants in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study cohort (1987–2015). Baseline sport and exercise activities were assessed via the modified Baecke questionnaire. Incident CVD included coronary heart disease, heart failure, or stroke. Multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazard models assessed the association of participation in specific sport and exercise activities at enrollment with risk of CVD. Results: During a median follow-up time of 25.2 years, 30% of the analytic sample (n = 3966) was diagnosed with incident CVD. In fully adjusted models, participation in racquet sports (hazard ratio [HR] 0.75; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.61–0.93), aerobics (HR 0.75; 95% CI, 0.63–0.88), running (HR 0.68; 95% CI, 0.54–0.85), and walking (HR 0.89; 95% CI, 0.83–0.95) was significantly associated with a lower risk of CVD. There were no significant associations for bicycling, softball/baseball, gymnastics, swimming, basketball, calisthenics exercises, golfing with cart, golfing with walking, bowling, or weight training. Conclusions: Participation in specific sport and exercises may substantially reduce the risk for CVD

    Developing general cultural awareness in a monocultural English as a foreign language context in a Mexican university: a wiki-based critical incident approach

    © 2013 Association for Language Learning. This article explores what the ‘intercultural turn’ might mean in the case of teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). The discussion is contextualised in what has been termed the ‘expanding circle’ of English and focuses on an English as a foreign language (EFL) class in a Mexican university, a context where the full implications of a shift from EFL to English as a lingua franca (ELF) have yet to be addressed. We consider how the intercultural turn might be understood in this Mexican context and then present the rationale for, and design of, a technology-based (wiki) extra-curricular pilot project which adopted less of an EFL/cultural and more of an ELF/intercultural approach. We evaluate the evidence from this small-scale project in terms of students\u27 developing general cultural awareness and suggest that this type of project, an example of the intercultural turn, might be more widely applicable in similar ‘expanding circle’ EFL contexts

    Lesbian and bisexual women's experiences of sexuality-based discrimination and their appearance concerns

    Lesbian and bisexual women frequently experience sexuality-based discrimination, which is often based on others' judgements about their appearance. This short article aims to explore whether there is a relationship between lesbian and bisexual women's experiences of sexuality-based discrimination and their satisfaction with the way that they look. Findings from an online survey suggest that discrimination is negatively related to appearance satisfaction for lesbian women, but not for bisexual women. It is argued that this difference exists because lesbian appearance norms are more recognisable and distinctive than bisexual women's appearance norms

    Genome-wide association study of kidney function decline in individuals of European descent.

    Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have identified multiple loci associated with cross-sectional eGFR, but a systematic genetic analysis of kidney function decline over time is missing. Here we conducted a GWAS meta-analysis among 63,558 participants of European descent, initially from 16 cohorts with serial kidney function measurements within the CKDGen Consortium, followed by independent replication among additional participants from 13 cohorts. In stage 1 GWAS meta-analysis, single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) at MEOX2, GALNT11, IL1RAP, NPPA, HPCAL1, and CDH23 showed the strongest associations for at least one trait, in addition to the known UMOD locus, which showed genome-wide significance with an annual change in eGFR. In stage 2 meta-analysis, the significant association at UMOD was replicated. Associations at GALNT11 with Rapid Decline (annual eGFR decline of 3 ml/min per 1.73 m(2) or more), and CDH23 with eGFR change among those with CKD showed significant suggestive evidence of replication. Combined stage 1 and 2 meta-analyses showed significance for UMOD, GALNT11, and CDH23. Morpholino knockdowns of galnt11 and cdh23 in zebrafish embryos each had signs of severe edema 72 h after gentamicin treatment compared with controls, but no gross morphological renal abnormalities before gentamicin administration. Thus, our results suggest a role in the deterioration of kidney function for the loci GALNT11 and CDH23, and show that the UMOD locus is significantly associated with kidney function decline.Kidney International advance online publication, 10 December 2014; doi:10.1038/ki.2014.361

    Cowpea Rhizobium NGR234 grows with a mean generation time of 3.5 h on L-proline; intracellular catabolism via proline oxidase and pyrroline 5-carboxylate dehydrogenase is induced by proline. In contrast, cells have some capacity to take up proline whatever the growth medium. Uptake of proline is active and transmembrane gradients of approximately 290-fold can be generated. The proline transporter(s) appear to carry a range of amino acids and intracellular [14C]proline can be exchanged with extracellular valine or histidine or isoleucine but not glutamate. Snake bean bacteroids are unable to transport or catabolize L-proline, consistent with the lack of detectable proline in snakebean nodule cytosol. In this symbiosis at least, proline is not an important carbon source for bacteroids

    Siderophore and organic acid production in root nodule bacteria

    Nineteen strains of root nodule bacteria were grown under various iron regimes (0.1, 1.0 and 20 ÎŒM added iron) and tested for catechol and hydroxamate siderophore production and the excretion of malate and citrate. The growth response of the strains to iron differed markedly. For 12 strains (Bradyrhizobium strains NC92B and 32H1, B. japonicum USDA110 and CB1809, B. lupini WU8, cowpea Rhizobium NGR234, Rhizobium meliloti strains U45 and CC169, Rhizobium leguminosarum bv viciae WU235 and Rhizobium leguminosarum bv trifolii strains TA1, T1 and WU95) the mean generation time showed no variation with the 200-fold increase in iron concentration. In contrast, in Bradyrhizobium strains NC921, CB756 and TAL1000, B. japonicum strain 61A76 and R. leguminosarum bv viciae MNF300 there was a 2-5 fold decrease in growth rate at low iron. R. meliloti strains WSM419 and WSM540 showed decreased growth at high iron. All strains of root nodule bacteria tested gave a positive CAS (chrome azurol S) assay for siderophore production. No catechol-type siderophores were found in any strain, and only R. leguminosarum bv trifolii T1 and bv viciae WU235 produced hydroxamate under low iron (0.1 and 1.0 ÎŒM added iron). Malate was excreted by all strains grown under all iron regimes. Citrate was excreted by B. japonicum USDA110 and B. lupini WU8 in all iron concentrations, while Bradyrhizobium TAL1000, R. leguminosarum bv viciae MNF300 and B. japonicum 61A76 only produced citrate under low iron (0.1 and/or 1.0 ÎŒM added iron) during the stationary phase of growth
