Learning from design creativity: translating processes from practice to education

This paper is made available with permission of the Design Society, who own the copyright.This paper develops reflections on design creativity as a cross-curriculum tool in mainstream formal education at primary/elementary level. Evidence comes from a contemporary UK case study of a series of workshops whereby architectural design professionals introduced design creativity into mainstream primary teaching and learning situations, developed through the UK Creative Partnerships‘ programme. This programme, which until recently was funded through central government, introduced principles of collaborative creativity through targeted programmes of change and enquiry involving pupils, teachers and creative practitioners. Following the processes of designing and delivering a programme to embed creative exploration through design tasks which focus on the learning environment, the authors, both architectural practitioners and educators, undertake further reflection back to the architectural profession and the societal role of collaborative creative design. We propose a hybrid practice in which architects might swap skills with teachers, pupils, teaching assistants and school management. This process reveals new creative concepts to pupils and staff, and unearths latent abilities within pupils as they work collaboratively to develop and provide design services for the built fabric or spatial use of school spaces
Competing interactions of spin and lattice in the Kondo lattice model
The magnetic properties of a system of coexisting localized spins and
conduction electrons are investigated within an extended version of the one
dimensional Kondo lattice model in which effects stemming from the
electron-lattice and on-site Coulomb interactions are explicitly included.
After bosonizing the conduction electrons, is it observed that intrinsic
inhomogeneities with the statistical scaling properties of a Griffiths phase
appear, and determine the spin structure of the localized impurities. The
appearance of the inhomogeneities is enhanced by appropriate phonons and acts
destructively on the spin ordering. The inhomogeneities appear on well defined
length scales, can be compared to the formation of intrinsic mesoscopic
metastable patterns which are found in two-fluid systems.Comment: 9 pages, to appear in Jour. Superconductivit
Electron identification performance with ALICE TRD prototypes
We present the electron/pion identification performance measured with
prototypes for ALICE TRD. Measured spectra of energy deposit of pions and
electrons as well as their average values are presented and compared to
calculations. Various radiators are investigated over the momentum range of 1
to 6 GeV/c. The time signature of TR is exploited in a bidimensional likelihood

Magnetic field enhanced structural instability in EuTiO_{3}
EuTiO_{3} undergoes a structural phase transition from cubic to tetragonal at
T_S = 282 K which is not accompanied by any long range magnetic order. However,
it is related to the oxygen ocathedra rotation driven by a zone boundary
acoustic mode softening. Here we show that this displacive second order
structural phase transition can be shifted to higher temperatures by the
application of an external magnetic field (increased by 4 K for mu_{0}H = 9 T).
This observed field dependence is in agreement with theoretical predictions
based on a coupled spin-anharmonic-phonon interaction model.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Polaron Coherence as Origin of the Pseudogap Phase in High Temperature Superconducting Cuprates
Within a two component approach to high Tc copper oxides including polaronic
couplings, we identify the pseudogap phase as the onset of polaron ordering.
This ordering persists in the superconducting phase. A huge isotope effect on
the pseudogap onset temperature is predicted and in agreement with experimental
data. The anomalous temperature dependence of the mean square copper oxygen ion
displacement observed above, at and below Tc stems from an s-wave
superconducting component of the order parameter, whereas a pure d-wave order
parameter alone can be excluded.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure
Religious experience and sacred text
As Kees Waaijman has shown, biblical spirituality engages Holy Scripture in relation to human experience, always with a view toward personal transformation. This article considers various ways in which the relationship between religious experience and sacred text has been construed in the Christian tradition. Beginning with biblical theophanies that represent religious experience in the sacred text, the article moves to early Christian reading practices that foster experience of the text, and then to medieval accounts of mystical revelations that treat experience as a text. Finally, the article turns to the problematic issue of religious experience beyond the sacred text. In some historical instances, experience was supposed to render the text unnecessary, or to sit in judgement over it. But the Book of Revelation implies that the sacred text will no longer be needed, only because its promises have been fulfilled by direct experience of the divine presence
