Effects of Corn and Selected Weed Species on Feeding Behavior of the Stalk Borer, \u3ci\u3ePapaipema Nebris\u3c/i\u3e (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)
Experiments were conducted in an outdoor insectary to examine behavioral interactions between fifth instar stalk borers, Papaiperna nebris, and potential host plant species. Plants tested included 6- and 8-leaf stage corn, Zea mays, and ten weed species (six broadleaf and four grass) commonly associated with corn production in southern Wisconsin. Broadleaf plants found to be acceptable hosts included Ambrosia trifida, Arnaranthus retroflexus, Rumex crispus, and Chenopodium album; Asclepias syriaca and Abutilon theophrasti were not acceptable as host plants. Corn and the other grass species (Agropyron repens, Bromus inermis, Dactylis glomerata, and Setaria faberi) were found to be acceptable hosts. All acceptable plants also supported larval development to the pupal stage, though on 6-leaf stage corn and the small-stemmed grasses the majority of larvae dispersed before completing development. Larvae developing on corn, A. triftda, and A. retroflexus pupated within the plant stem, whereas larvae developing on the other plants pupated in the soil near the plant on which they fed. Stalk borer larvae required substantially less time to bore into corn stalks than into the stems of the broadleaf plants. Survival, Development and Population Dynamics of \u3ci\u3eEmpoasca Fabae\u3c/i\u3e (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) on Three Legume Hosts
Survival and development of potato leafhopper, Empoasca fabae, nymphs were measured on alfalfa (Medicago sativa), birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), and red clover (Trifolium pratense). Survival was not significantly different among host plants (mean = 62%). There was no interaction between sex and host plant for developmental time. Males developed significantly faster than females. Developmental time was fastest on alfalfa, intermediate on trefoil, and slowest on red clover. Plots of alfalfa, trefoil, and red clover were planted to compare the seasonal abundance of the potato leafhopper in the three forages. Nymphs were more abundant in trefoil than in alfalfa and red clover late in July, but no differences occurred on the other sample dates. At their peak, adults were more abundant in alfalfa than in trefoil and red clover
Screen Barriers for Reducing Interplot Movement of Three Adult Plant Bug (Hemiptera: Miridae) Species in Small Plot Experiments
Fiberglass screen barriers 1.2 m high were erected around small (7.3 x 3.7 m) plots of birdsfoot trefoil, Lotus corniculatus, to study the effectiveness of screen barriers in reducing adult plant bug migration into small field plots. Screened and unscreened (control) plots were sprayed with an insecticide at the onset of the experiment, and subsequent adult mirid migration into these trefoil plots was measured by sweep net samples during the following 24 day period. Combined adult Adelphocoris lineolatus, Lygus lineolaris, and Plagiognathus chrysanthemi densities were significantly lower in screened versus unscreened plots with 37070, 28010, and 23070 fewer adults at 7, 17, and 24 days, respectively, following insecticide application. Although these barriers were inexpensive and simple to construct, we conclude that they were not practical and effective enough for reducing adult mirid migration in small plot experiments of this type
Insect Pests Associated With Birdsfoot Trefoil, \u3ci\u3eLotus Corniculatus\u3c/i\u3e, in Wisconsin
Insect surveys taken during 1984-1986 in Ashland and Bayfield Counties of northern Wisconsin revealed that several potential insect pest species were common in birdsfoot trefoil, Lotus corniculatus. Three plant bug species, including: the tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris: alfalfa plant bug, Adelphocoris lineolatus; and Plagiognathus chrysanthemi were abundant in most sampled fields. P. chrysanthemi was the most abundant species, was only present in the northern locations, and completed one generation per year. A. lineolatus and L. lineolaris were second and third in abundance, respectively, and completed two generations per year. Population levels of the potato leafhopper, Empoasca fabae. exceeded a combined total of 45 nymphs and adults per sweep in a southern Wisconsin location but were uncommon in northern Wisconsin. Present, but less abundant, were the trefoil seed chalcid, Bruchophagus platypterus; meadow spittlebug, Philaenus spumarius; and pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, all occurring at densities of less than one insect per sweep
A maximum-likelihood method for improving faint source flux and color estimates
Flux estimates for faint sources or transients are systematically biased high
because there are far more truly faint sources than bright. Corrections which
account for this effect are presented as a function of signal-to-noise ratio
and the (true) slope of the faint-source number-flux relation. The corrections
depend on the source being originally identified in the image in which it is
being photometered. If a source has been identified in other data, the
corrections are different; a prescription for calculating the corrections is
presented. Implications of these corrections for analyses of surveys are
discussed; the most important is that sources identified at signal-to-noise

Near Infrared Imaging of the Hubble Deep Field with The Keck Telescope
Two deep K-band () images, with point-source detection limits of
mag (one sigma), taken with the Keck Telescope in subfields of the
Hubble Deep Field, are presented and analyzed. A sample of objects to K=24 mag
is constructed and and colors are measured. By
stacking visually selected objects, mean colors can be measured to
very faint levels; the mean color is constant with apparent
magnitude down to mag.Comment: Replaced with slightly revised source positions and corrected V-I

Counts and Colors of Faint Galaxies in the U and R Bands
Ground-based counts and colors of faint galaxies in the U and R bands in one
field at high Galactic latitude are presented. Integrated over flux, a total of
1.2x10^5 sources per square degree are found to U=25.5 mag and 6.3x10^5 sources
per square degree to R=27 mag, with d log N/dm ~ 0.5 in the U band and d log
N/dm ~ 0.3 in the R band. Consistent with these number-magnitude curves,
sources become bluer with increasing magnitude to median U-R=0.6 mag at 24<U<25
mag and U-R=1.2 mag at 25 < R < 26 mag. Because the Lyman break redshifts into
the U band at z~3, at least 1.2x10^5 sources per square degree must be at
redshifts z<3. Measurable U-band fluxes of 73 percent of the 6.3x10^5 sources
per square degree suggest that the majority of these also lie at z < 3. These

Constraints on the interacting vacuum -- geodesic CDM scenario
We investigate an interacting dark sector scenario in which the vacuum energy
is free to interact with cold dark matter (CDM), which itself is assumed to
cluster under the sole action of gravity, i.e. it is in free fall (geodesic),
as in CDM. The interaction is characterised by a dimensionless
coupling that we constrain using cosmic microwave background data
from the Planck 2015 data release, along with baryon acoustic oscillation,
redshift space distortion and Type Ia supernova measurements. We present the
full linear perturbation theory of this interacting scenario and use MCMC
sampling to study five different cases: two cases in which we have CDM
evolution in the distant past, until a set redshift , below
which the interaction switches on and is the single sampled
parameter, with fixed at and respectively; a case where we allow this transition redshift to
vary along with ; a case in which the vacuum energy is zero for
and then begins to grow once the interaction switches on; and
the final case in which we bin in four redshift bins to
investigate the possibility of a dynamical interaction, reconstructing the
redshift evolution of the function using Gaussian processes. We find that, in
all cases where the high redshift evolution is not modified, the results are
compatible with a vanishing coupling, thus finding no significant deviation

The impact of greyscale inversion for nodule detection in an anthropomorphic chest phantom: a free-response observer study
Objective: The aim of this work was to assess the impact of greyscale inversion on nodule detection on poster- oanterior chest X-ray images. Previous work has attemp- ted this, with no consensus opinion formed. We assessed the value of âfast-flickingâ between standard and inverted display modes for nodule detection.
Methods: Six consultant radiologists (with 5â32 yearsâ reporting experience) completed an observer task under the free-response paradigm. An anthropomorphic chest phantom was loaded with 50 different configurations of simulated nodules (1â4 nodules per case) measuring 5, 8, 10 and 12mm in spherical diameter; each configuration represented a single case. In addition, 25 cases contained no nodules. Images were displayed in three modes: (i) standard, (ii) inverted and (iii) fast-flicking between standard and inverted display modes. Each observer completed the study in a different order of display (i, ii, iii) using a calibrated 5-megapixel monitor. Nodules were localized with mouse clicks and ratings assigned using a 1â10 discrete slider-bar confidence scale. Rjafroc (Pitts- burgh, PA) was used for data analysis; differences in nodule detection performance were considered significant at 0.05.
Results: The observer-averaged weighted jackknife alter- native free-response receiver-operating characteristic figures of merit were 0.715 (standard), 0.684 (inverted) and 0.717 (fast-flicking). Random-reader fixed-case anal- ysis revealed no statistically significant difference be- tween any treatment pair [F(2,8) 5 1.22; p 5 0.345].
Conclusion: No statistically significant difference in nodule detection was found for the three display conditions.
Advances in knowledge: We have investigated the impact of fast-flicking between standard and inverted display modes for the detection of nodules. We found no benefit
HST Imaging Polarimetry of the Gravitational Lens FSC10214+4724
We present imaging polarimetry of the extremely luminous, redshift 2.3 IRAS
source FSC10214+4724. The observations were obtained with HST's Faint Object
Camera in the F437M filter, which is free of strong emission lines. The 0.7
arcsec long arc is unresolved to 0.04 arcsec FWHM in the transverse direction,
and has an integrated polarization of 28 +/- 3 percent, in good agreement with
ground-based observations. The polarization position angle varies along the arc
by up to 35 deg. The overall position angle is 62 +/- 3 deg east of north. No
counterimage is detected to B = 27.5 mag (), giving an observed arc to
counterimage flux ratio greater than 250, considerably greater than the flux
ratio of 100 measured previously in the I-band. This implies that the
configuration of the object in the source plane at the B-band is different from
that at I-band, and/or that the lensing galaxy is dusty.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures. Accepted for publication in Astronomical
