Scales of the Extra Dimensions and their Gravitational Wave Backgrounds
Circumstances are described in which symmetry breaking during the formation
of our three-dimensional brane within a higher-dimensional space in the early
universe excites mesoscopic classical radion or brane-displacement degrees of
freedom and produces a detectable stochastic background of gravitational
radiation. The spectrum of the background is related to the unification energy
scale and the the sizes and numbers of large extra dimensions. It is shown that
properties of the background observable by gravitational-wave observatories at
frequencies Hz to Hz contain information about
unification on energy scales from 1 to TeV, gravity propagating
through extra-dimension sizes from 1 mm to mm, and the dynamical

Noise characterization for LISA
We consider the general problem of estimating the inflight LISA noise power
spectra and cross-spectra, which are needed for detecting and estimating the
gravitational wave signals present in the LISA data. For the LISA baseline
design and in the long wavelength limit, we bound the error on all spectrum
estimators that rely on the use of the fully symmetric Sagnac combination
(). This procedure avoids biases in the estimation that would otherwise
be introduced by the presence of a strong galactic background in the LISA data.
We specialize our discussion to the detection and study of the galactic white
dwarf-white dwarf binary stochastic signal.Comment: 9 figure
Strength Reduction in Electrical and Elastic Networks
Particular aspects of problems ranging from dielectric breakdown to metal
insu- lator transition can be studied using electrical o elastic networks. We
present an expression for the mean breakdown strength of such networks.First,
we intro- duce a method to evaluate the redistribution of current due to the
removal of a finite number of elements from a hyper-cubic network of
conducatances.It is used to determine the reduction of breakdown strength due
to a fracture of size .Numerical analysis is used to show that the
analogous reduction due to random removal of elements from electrical and
elastic networks follow a similar form.One possible application, namely the use

Using Nonlinear Response to Estimate the Strength of an Elastic Network
Disordered networks of fragile elastic elements have been proposed as a model
of inner porous regions of large bones [Gunaratne et.al., cond-mat/0009221,
http://xyz.lanl.gov]. It is shown that the ratio of responses of such
a network to static and periodic strain can be used to estimate its ultimate
(or breaking) stress. Since bone fracture in older adults results from the
weakening of porous bone, we discuss the possibility of using as a
non-invasive diagnostic of osteoporotic bone.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Evidence that the Bursting Component of the X-ray Radiation From 3C 111 Originates in the PC-Scale Jet
Evidence is presented indicating that the bursting component of the X-ray
radiation detected in the nuclear region of the active radio galaxy 3C 111
comes from the blobs ejected in the pc-scale jet and not from the accretion
disc. After each new outburst the radio flux density associated with it
increases to a peak in ~1 year and then subsides over a period of 1-2 years
with the flux falling off exponentially as the blob moves outward and
dissipates. Similar peaks (bursts) are seen in the X-ray light curve and a
cross-correlation between the two shows a very high correlation with the X-ray
peaks leading the radio peaks by ~100 days. A second cross-correlation, this
time between the radio event start times and the X-ray light curve, also shows
a significant correlation. When this is taken together with the long (~1 yr)
delay between the start of each ejection event and its associated X-ray peak it
indicates that this bursting component of the X-ray flux must be associated
with the ejected blobs in the pc-scale jet and not with the accretion disc.
Because X-ray telescopes do not have the resolution required to resolve the
accretion disc area from the pc-scale jet, this paper is the first to present
observational evidence that can pinpoint the point of origin of at least those

Beyond binary retention in HIV care: Predictors of the dynamic processes of patient engagement, disengagement, and re-entry into care in a US clinical cohort
Objectives: Studies examining engagement in HIV care often capture cross-sectional patient status to estimate retention and identify predictors of attrition, which ignore longitudinal patient care-seeking behaviors. We describe the cyclical nature of (dis)engagement and re-entry into HIV care using the state transition framework. Design: We represent the dynamic patterns of patient care-retention using five states: engaged in care, missed one, two, three, or more expected visits, and deceased. Then we describe various care-seeking behaviors in terms of transitioning from one state to another (e.g. from disengaged to engaged). This analysis includes 31 009 patients enrolled in the Center for AIDS Research Network of Integrated Systems (CNICS) in the United States from 1996 to 2014. Method: Multistate models for longitudinal data were used to identify barriers to retention and subgroups at higher risk of falling out of care. Results: The initial 2 years following primary engagement in care were a crucial time for improving retention. Patients who had not initiated antiretroviral therapy, with lower CD4+ cell counts, higher viral load, or not having an AIDS-defining illness were less likely to be retained in care. Conclusion: Beyond the individual patient characteristics typically used to characterize retention in HIV care, we identified specific periods of time and points in the care continuum associated with elevated risk of transitioning out of care. Our findings can contribute to evidence-based recommendations to enhance long-term retention in CNICS. This approach can also be applied to other cohort data to identify retention strategies tailored to each population
Revisit of the Interaction between Holographic Dark Energy and Dark Matter
In this paper we investigate the possible direct, non-gravitational
interaction between holographic dark energy (HDE) and dark matter. Firstly, we
start with two simple models with the interaction terms
and , and then we move on to the general form . The cosmological constraints of the models are
obtained from the joint analysis of the present Union2.1+BAO+CMB+ data. We
find that the data slightly favor an energy flow from dark matter to dark
energy, although the original HDE model still lies in the 95.4% confidence
level (CL) region. For all models we find at the 95.4% CL. We show that
compared with the cosmic expansion, the effect of interaction on the evolution
of and is smaller, and the relative increment
(decrement) amount of the energy in the dark matter component is constrained to
be less than 9% (15%) at the 95.4% CL. By introducing the interaction, we find
that even when the big rip still can be avoided due to the existence of a
de Sitter solution at . We show that this solution can not be
accomplished in the two simple models, while for the general model such a
solution can be achieved with a large , and the big rip may be avoided

Pkd1 Regulates Lymphatic Vascular Morphogenesis during Development.
Lymphatic vessels arise during development through sprouting of precursor cells from veins, which is regulated by known signaling and transcriptional mechanisms. The ongoing elaboration of vessels to form a network is less well understood. This involves cell polarization, coordinated migration, adhesion, mixing, regression, and shape rearrangements. We identified a zebrafish mutant, lymphatic and cardiac defects 1 (lyc1), with reduced lymphatic vessel development. A mutation in polycystic kidney disease 1a was responsible for the phenotype. PKD1 is the most frequently mutated gene in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Initial lymphatic precursor sprouting is normal in lyc1 mutants, but ongoing migration fails. Loss of Pkd1 in mice has no effect on precursor sprouting but leads to failed morphogenesis of the subcutaneous lymphatic network. Individual lymphatic endothelial cells display defective polarity, elongation, and adherens junctions. This work identifies a highly selective and unexpected role for Pkd1 in lymphatic vessel morphogenesis during development
Resilience and HIV: a review of the definition and study of resilience
We use a socioecological model of health to define resilience, review the definition and study of resilience among persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH) in the existing peer-reviewed literature, and discuss the strengths and limitations of how resilience is defined and studied in HIV research. We conducted a review of resilience research for HIV-related behaviors/outcomes of antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence, clinic attendance, CD4 cell count, viral load, viral suppression, and/or immune functioning among PLWH. We performed searches using PubMed, PsycINFO and Google Scholar databases. The initial search generated 14,296 articles across the three databases, but based on our screening of these articles and inclusion criteria, n = 54 articles were included for review. The majority of HIV resilience research defines resilience only at the individual (i.e., psychological) level or studies individual and limited interpersonal resilience (e.g., social support). Furthermore, the preponderance of HIV resilience research uses general measures of resilience; these measures have not been developed with or tailored to the needs of PLWH. Our review suggests that a socioecological model of health approach can more fully represent the construct of resilience. Furthermore, measures specific to PLWH that capture individual, interpersonal, and neighborhood resilience are needed
The Deformable Universe
The concept of smooth deformations of a Riemannian manifolds, recently
evidenced by the solution of the Poincar\'e conjecture, is applied to
Einstein's gravitational theory and in particular to the standard FLRW
cosmology. We present a brief review of the deformation of Riemannian geometry,
showing how such deformations can be derived from the Einstein-Hilbert
dynamical principle. We show that such deformations of space-times of general
relativity produce observable effects that can be measured by four-dimensional
observers. In the case of the FLRW cosmology, one such observable effect is
