    Employee Stock Ownership and Financial Performance in European Countries: The Moderating Effects of Uncertainty Avoidance and Social Trust

    This study investigates how the effect of employee stock ownership on financial performance may hinge on the diverse cultural and societal contexts of European countries. Based on agency and national culture theories, we hypothesize that the positive relationship between employee stock ownership and return on assets (ROA) is stronger in those nations with lower uncertainty avoidance and higher social trust. Using a multisource, time‐lagged, large‐scale dataset of 1,741 firms from 21 countries in Europe, our multilevel, random coefficient modeling analysis found evidence for these hypotheses, suggesting that uncertainty avoidance and social trust serve as important contextual cues in predicting the linkage between employee stock ownership and financial performance. Our supplemental analysis with distinction between the managerial and nonmanagerial employee stock ownership further indicates managerial employee stock ownership has a direct positive effect on ROA. Although nonmanagerial employee stock ownership had a nonsignificant association with ROA, the relationship was positive and significant when uncertainty avoidance was low and social trust was high. This research contributes to the existing literature by illuminating some of the contextual influences altering the effectiveness of employee stock ownership. Our findings also offer practical suggestions for effectively using employee stock ownership

    Examining the moderating effect of individual-level cultural values on users’ acceptance of E-learning in developing countries: a structural equation modeling of an extended technology acceptance model

    In this study, we examine the effects of individual-level culture on the adoption and acceptance of e-learning tools by students in Lebanon using a theoretical framework based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). To overcome possible limitations of using TAM in developing countries, we extend TAM to include subjective norms (SN) and quality of work life constructs as additional constructs and a number of cultural variables as moderators. The four cultural dimensions of masculinity/femininity (MF), individualism/collectivism, power distance and uncertainty avoidance were measured at the individual level to enable them to be integrated into the extended TAM as moderators and a research model was developed based on previous literature. To test the hypothesised model, data were collected from 569 undergraduate and postgraduate students using e-learning tools in Lebanon via questionnaire. The collected data were analysed using the structural equation modelling technique in conjunction with multi-group analysis. As hypothesised, the results of the study revealed perceived usefulness (PU), perceived ease of use (PEOU), SN and quality of work life to be significant determinants of students’ behavioural intention (BI) towards e-learning. The empirical results also demonstrated that the relationship between SN and BI was particularly sensitive to differences in individual-cultural values, with significant moderating effects observed for all four of the cultural dimensions studied. Some moderating effects of culture were also found for both PU and PEOU, however, contrary to expectations the effect of quality of work life was not found to be moderated by MF as some previous authors have predicted.     Evolving information systems: meeting the ever-changing environment

    To meet the demands of organizations and their ever-changing environment, information systems are required which are able to evolve to the same extent as organizations do. Such a system has to support changes in all time-and application-dependent aspects. In this paper, requirements and a conceptual framework for evolving information systems are presented. This framework includes an architecture for such systems and a revision of the traditional notion of update. Based on this evolutionary notion of update (recording, correction and forgetting) a state transition-oriented model on three levels of abstraction (event level, recording level, correction level) is introduced. Examples are provided to illustrate the conceptual framework for evolving information systems

    Internationalisation, cultural distance and country characteristics: a Bayesian analysis of SME's financial performance

    Relying on the accounting data of a panel of 403 Italian manufacturing SMEs collected over a period of 5 years, we find results suggesting that multinationality per se does not impact on the economic performance of international small and medium sized firms. It is the characteristics of the country selected i.e. the political hazard, the financial stability and the economic performance that significantly influence SMEs financial performance. The management implication for small and medium sized firms selecting and entering new geographic markets is significant, since our results show that for SMEs it is the market selection process that really matters and not the degree of multinationality

    Phase transition in the Sznajd model with independence

    We propose a model of opinion dynamics which describes two major types of social influence -- conformity and independence. Conformity in our model is described by the so called outflow dynamics (known as Sznajd model). According to sociologists' suggestions, we introduce also a second type of social influence, known in social psychology as independence. Various social experiments have shown that the level of conformity depends on the society. We introduce this level as a parameter of the model and show that there is a continuous phase transition between conformity and independence

    Multiscale analysis of human tissue engineered matrices for heart valve tissue engineering applications

    Human tissue-engineered matrices (hTEMs) have been proposed as a promising approach for in-situ tissue engineered heart valves (TEHVs). However, there is still a limited understanding on how ECM composition in hTEMs develops over tissue culture time. Therefore, we performed a longitudinal hTEM assessment by 1) multiscale evaluation of hTEM composition during culture time (2, 4, 6-weeks), using (immuno)histology, biochemical assays, and mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS); 2) analysis of protein pathways involved in ECM development using gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA); and 3) assessment of hTEM mechanical characterization using uniaxial tensile testing. Finally, as proof-of-concept, TEHVs manufactured using 6-weeks hTEM samples were tested in a pulse duplicator. LC-MS/MS confirmed the tissue culture time-dependent increase in ECM proteins observed in histology and biochemical assays, revealing the most abundant collagens (COL6,COL12), proteoglycans (HSPG2,VCAN), and glycoproteins (FN,TNC). GSEA identified the most represented protein pathways in the hTEM at 2-weeks (mRNA metabolic processes), 4-weeks (ECM production), and 6-weeks (ECM organization and maturation). Uniaxial mechanical testing showed increased stiffness and stress at failure, and reduction in strain over tissue culture time. hTEM-based TEHVs demonstrated promising in vitro performance at both pulmonary and aortic pressure conditions, with symmetric leaflet coaptation and no stenosis. In conclusion, ECM protein abundance and maturation increased over tissue culture time, with consequent improvement of hTEM mechanical characterics. These findings suggest that longer tissue culture impacts tissue organization, leading to an hTEM that may be suitable for high-pressure applications. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: : It is believed that the composition of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in the human tissue engineered matrices (hTEM) may favor tissue engineered heart valve (TEHV) remodeling upon implantation. However, the exact protein composition of the hTEM, and how this impacts tissue mechanical properties, remains unclear. Hence, we developed a reproducible rotation-based tissue culture method to produce hTEM samples. We performed a longitudinal assessment using different analytical techniques and mass spectrometry. Our data provided an in-depth characterization of the hTEM proteome with focus on ECM components, their development, and how they may impact the mechanical properties. Based on these results, we manufactured functional hTEM-based TEHVs at aortic-like condition in vitro. These outcomes pose an important step in translating hTEM-based TEHVs into clinics and in predicting their remodeling potential upon implantation

    Turning event logs into process movies : animating what has really happened

    Today's information systems log vast amount of data which contains information about the actual execution of business processes. The analysis of this data can provide a solid starting point for business process improvement. This is the realm of process mining, an area which has provided a repertoire of many analysis techniques. Despite the impressive capabilities of existing process mining algorithms, dealing with the abundance of data recorded by contemporary systems and devices remains a challenge. Of particular importance is the capability to guide the meaningful interpretation of this 'ocean' of data by process analysts. To this end, insights from the field of visual analytics can be leveraged. An approach is proposed where process states are reconstructed from event logs and visualised in succession, leading to an animated history of a process. This approach is customisable in how a process state, partially defined through a collection of activity instances, is visualised: one can select a map and specify a projection of activity instances on this map based on their properties. In this paper an implementation of the proposal is described for the open-source process-mining framework ProM along with reporting an evaluation with one of Australia's largest insurance companies: Suncorp
