Information filtering via Iterative Refinement
With the explosive growth of accessible information, expecially on the
Internet, evaluation-based filtering has become a crucial task. Various systems
have been devised aiming to sort through large volumes of information and
select what is likely to be more relevant. In this letter we analyse a new
ranking method, where the reputation of information providers is determined

Tritium Atmospheric Transport and Deposition Following Acute Releases: Comparisons With a Simple Transport Model
During 35 years of operation of the Savannah River Site (SRS) there have been a small number of inadvertent tritium releases to the atmosphere. After detection of the releases by stack monitors, field crews were dispatched to determine the concentration of tritium in the environment. The objective of the measurement was to verify environmental concentrations calculated by dose assessment models. Air samples were used to verify the concentration levels and tritium forms during the plume passage. It was not feasible to take enough samples in the plume path to determine the two dimensional distribution of tritium concentration in the plume. However, the ground level distribution was very well reflected vegetation samples. Therefore, it is unusually possible to determine plume shape, plume width, and the relative maximum concentration as the plume moves downwind from the vegetation samples. In eight of the nine releases studied, the monitoring data allowed comparison with atmospheric transport models
The Ehrenfest urn revisited: Playing the game on a realistic fluid model
The Ehrenfest urn process, also known as the dogs and fleas model, is
realistically simulated by molecular dynamics of the Lennard-Jones fluid. The
key variable is Delta z, i.e. the absolute value of the difference between the
number of particles in one half of the simulation box and in the other half.
This is a pure-jump stochastic process induced, under coarse graining, by the
deterministic time evolution of the atomic coordinates. We discuss the Markov
hypothesis by analyzing the statistical properties of the jumps and of the
waiting times between jumps. In the limit of a vanishing integration time-step,
the distribution of waiting times becomes closer to an exponential and,
therefore, the continuous-time jump stochastic process is Markovian. The random
variable Delta z behaves as a Markov chain and, in the gas phase, the observed
transition probabilities follow the predictions of the Ehrenfest theory.Comment: Accepted by Physical Review E on 4 May 200
Centre selection for clinical trials and the generalisability of results: a mixed methods study.
BACKGROUND: The rationale for centre selection in randomised controlled trials (RCTs) is often unclear but may have important implications for the generalisability of trial results. The aims of this study were to evaluate the factors which currently influence centre selection in RCTs and consider how generalisability considerations inform current and optimal practice. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Mixed methods approach consisting of a systematic review and meta-summary of centre selection criteria reported in RCT protocols funded by the UK National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) initiated between January 2005-January 2012; and an online survey on the topic of current and optimal centre selection, distributed to professionals in the 48 UK Clinical Trials Units and 10 NIHR Research Design Services. The survey design was informed by the systematic review and by two focus groups conducted with trialists at the Birmingham Centre for Clinical Trials. 129 trial protocols were included in the systematic review, with a total target sample size in excess of 317,000 participants. The meta-summary identified 53 unique centre selection criteria. 78 protocols (60%) provided at least one criterion for centre selection, but only 31 (24%) protocols explicitly acknowledged generalisability. This is consistent with the survey findings (n = 70), where less than a third of participants reported generalisability as a key driver of centre selection in current practice. This contrasts with trialists' views on optimal practice, where generalisability in terms of clinical practice, population characteristics and economic results were prime considerations for 60% (n = 42), 57% (n = 40) and 46% (n = 32) of respondents, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Centres are rarely enrolled in RCTs with an explicit view to external validity, although trialists acknowledge that incorporating generalisability in centre selection should ideally be more prominent. There is a need to operationalize 'generalisability' and incorporate it at the design stage of RCTs so that results are readily transferable to 'real world' practice
Final Report of the Fifth Meeting of Scientific Experts on Fish Stocks in the Central Arctic Ocean
This report provides a summary of the 5th meeting of scientific experts on Fish Stocks in the Central
Arctic Ocean (FiSCAO) on October 24â26, 2017, in Ottawa, Canada.
At the request of the 10 parties negotiating on an agreement to prevent unregulated commercial fishing
in the High Seas portion of the Central Arctic Ocean (CAO), participants of the 5th FiSCAO meeting were
tasked with addressing four Terms of Reference, summarized below:
ToR 1. Design a 1â3 year long mapping program.
ToR 2. Design a monitoring program.
ToR 3. Identify human, financial, vessel/equipment resources needed for mapping and
monitoring.
ToR 4. Develop data collection, sharing, and hosting protocols that outline the details of what
and how data shall be collected, shared, and hosted for consideration by the Parties.
The 5th FiSCAO meeting included scientific representatives from seven states including Canada, the
People's Republic of China, the European Union, Iceland, the Republic of Korea, the Kingdom of Norway
and the United States of America. The meeting also included representatives from the International
Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), the North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES) and
the Arctic Councilâs Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment (PAME) and Conservation of Arctic
Flora and Fauna (CAFF) working groups.
The report summarizes the elements for collecting baseline data (i.e., a mapping program) in the high
seas CAO to achieve the goals of documenting species distributions, relative abundances and key
ecosystem parameters (ToR 1). The mapping program describes the priority areas to sample, the types
of data to collect and possible data collection approaches to employ. Participants emphasized that
existing planned surveys are very limited, and that significant dedicated resources will be required to
implement the mapping program.
The report outlines a strategy for monitoring indicators of fish stocks and ecosystem components (ToR
2). The report includes a list of existing monitoring programs and a prioritized list of indicators to detect
environmental change in the high seas CAO. Further refinement of a monitoring program will use
information from the mapping program (ToR 1). Participants emphasized the need to begin monitoring
as soon as possible and that additional research is required to operationalize monitoring indicators.
The report summarizes the preliminary cost estimates (ToR 3) to implement a mapping program to
collect data in the high seas portion of the CAO using a vessel of opportunity and in the Pacific Gateway
region of the CAO using an independentlyâorganized survey. Cost implications for the monitoring
program and other scientific activities are also listed (e.g., data analysis, data management).
The report includes a draft data sharing policy as the foundation for a future data sharing protocol,
including the technical specifications for data sharing (ToR 4). The development of the data sharing
protocol will require negotiation and legal review among the participating states. A data management
and data sharing pilot study on a CAO fish database is suggested to test a framework
Reciprocal relations between workplace bullying, anxiety and vigor: A two-wave longitudinal study
Background and Objectives: Workplace bullying has been classified as an extreme social stressor in work contexts and has been repeatedly linked to several negative consequences. However, little research has examined reversed or reciprocal relations of bullying and outcomes. Design: We conducted a two-wave longitudinal study with a time lag of six months. Methods: The study sample consisted of 348 employees of the Spanish workforce. The present study examined longitudinal relationships between workplace bullying, psychological health, and well-being. On the basis of conservation of resources theory, we hypothesized that we would find reciprocal relations among study variables over time. Results: Results of cross-lagged structural equation modeling analyses supported our hypotheses. Specifically, it was found that Time 1 (T1) workplace bullying was negatively related to Time 2 (T2) vigor and positively related to T2 anxiety. Additionally, T1 anxiety and vigor had an effect on T2 workplace bullying. Conclusions: Overall, these findings support the validity of the theoretical models postulating a reciprocal bullyingâoutcome relationship, rather than simple one-way causal pathways approaches
Firm heterogeneity and wages under different bargaining regimes : does a centralised union care for low-productivity firms?
This paper studies the relationship between wages and the degree of firm heterogeneity in a given industry under different wage setting structures. To derive testable hypotheses, we set up a theoretical model that analyses the sensitivity of wages to the variability in productivity conditions in a unionsised oligopoly framework. The model distinguishes centralised and decentralised wage determination. The theoretical results predict wages to be negatively associated with the degree of firm heterogeneity under centralised wage-setting, as unions internalise negative externalities of a wage increase for low-productivity firms. We test this prediction using a linked employeremployee panel data set from the German mining and manufacturing sector. Consistent with our hypotheses, the empirical results suggest that under industry-level bargaining workers in more heterogeneous sectors receive lower wages than workers in more homogeneous sectors. In contrast, the degree of firm heterogeneity is found to have no negative impact on wages in uncovered firms and under firm-level contracts
Shark depredation: future directions in research and management
Shark depredation is a complex social-ecological issue that affects a range of fisheries worldwide. Increasing concern about the impacts of shark depredation, and how it intersects with the broader context of fisheries management, has driven recent research in this area, especially in Australia and the United States. This review synthesises these recent advances and provides strategic guidance for researchers aiming to characterise the occurrence of depredation, identify the shark species responsible, and test deterrent and management approaches to reduce its impacts. Specifically, the review covers the application of social science approaches, as well as advances in video camera and genetic methods for identifying depredating species. The practicalities and considerations for testing magnetic, electrical, and acoustic deterrent devices are discussed in light of recent research. Key concepts for the management of shark depredation are reviewed, with recommendations made to guide future research and policy development. Specific management responses to address shark depredation are lacking, and this review emphasizes that a âsilver bulletâ approach for mitigating depredation does not yet exist. Rather, future efforts to manage shark depredation must rely on a diverse range of integrated approaches involving those in the fishery (fishers, scientists and fishery managers), social scientists, educators, and other stakeholders
