A Cosine Similarity-based Method for Out-of-Distribution Detection
The ability to detect OOD data is a crucial aspect of practical machine
learning applications. In this work, we show that cosine similarity between the
test feature and the typical ID feature is a good indicator of OOD data. We
propose Class Typical Matching (CTM), a post hoc OOD detection algorithm that
uses a cosine similarity scoring function. Extensive experiments on multiple

Re-orientation Transition in Molecular Thin Films: Potts Model with Dipolar Interaction
We study the low-temperature behavior and the phase transition of a thin film
by Monte Carlo simulation. The thin film has a simple cubic lattice structure
where each site is occupied by a Potts parameter which indicates the molecular
orientation of the site. We take only three molecular orientations in this
paper which correspond to the 3-state Potts model. The Hamiltonian of the
system includes: (i) the exchange interaction between nearest-neighbor
sites and (ii) the long-range dipolar interaction of amplitude
truncated at a cutoff distance (iii) a single-ion perpendicular
anisotropy of amplitude . We allow between surface spins, and
otherwise. We show that the ground state depends on the the ratio
and . For a single layer, for a given , there is a critical value
below (above) which the ground-state (GS) configuration of molecular axes
is perpendicular (parallel) to the film surface. When the temperature is
increased, a re-orientation transition occurs near : the low- in-plane
ordering undergoes a transition to the perpendicular ordering at a finite ,
below the transition to the paramagnetic phase. The same phenomenon is observed
in the case of a film with a thickness. We show that the surface phase
transition can occur below or above the bulk transition depending on the ratio
. Surface and bulk order parameters as well as other physical quantities

Assessment of the Effectiveness of Ich Tam Khang as a Supportive Therapy for Chronic Heart Failure
Background: Heart failure is a chronic disease needing lifelong management. Despite the advances that have been made in the treatment of the disease, both the longevity and quality of life for those with chronic heart failure remain impaired. A more effective therapeutic approach with less negative side effects is still needed. In this study, we evaluate Ich Tam Khang (ITK), the poly-ingredient herbal and nutritional preparation with multiple physiological actions, as a supportive therapy for patients with chronic heart failure.Aims of Study: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Ich Tam Khang as an adjunctive treatment of chronic heart failure.Methods: A total of 60 patients with chronic congestive heart failure were enrolled in this open label, cross-sectional and prospective study. All patients were treated with a conventional regimen (digoxin, diuretics, angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), beta blockers) for at least 4 weeks before being divided into two equal groups. In the treated patients with ITK, patients received conventional therapy plus 4 tablets ITK per day added in two divided doses. In the control patients, all patients kept the same conventional regimen without ITK. All patients were followed up for 3 months for clinical and para-clinical outcomes.Result: The symptoms of heart failure (dyspnea, palpitation, peripheral edema, neck vein distention, heptojugular reflex) decreased. Heart rate and blood pressure stabilized during treatment in the treated patients with ITK. Additionally, total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol normalized in the patients treated with ITK. Most of echocardiography parameters in the ITK treated patients were superior to the control patients. ITK is safe and it has no side effects.Conclusion: ITK as a combination of herbal and nutritional preparation is effective in reducing heart failure symptoms, improving patient's quality of life for the patients with decompensated heart failure and reducing total cholesterol and LDL-C
Class based Influence Functions for Error Detection
Influence functions (IFs) are a powerful tool for detecting anomalous
examples in large scale datasets. However, they are unstable when applied to
deep networks. In this paper, we provide an explanation for the instability of
IFs and develop a solution to this problem. We show that IFs are unreliable
when the two data points belong to two different classes. Our solution
leverages class information to improve the stability of IFs. Extensive
experiments show that our modification significantly improves the performance

Hexa Histidine–Tagged Recombinant Human Cytoglobin Deactivates Hepatic Stellate Cells and Inhibits Liver Fibrosis by Scavenging Reactive Oxygen Species
BACKGROUND & AIMS: Anti-fibrotic therapy remains an unmet medical need in human chronic liver disease. We report the anti-fibrotic properties of cytoglobin (CYGB), a respiratory protein expressed in hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), the main cell type involved in liver fibrosis. APPROACH & RESULTS: Cygb-deficient mice which had bile duct ligation (BDL)-induced liver cholestasis or choline-deficient L-amino acid-defined (CDAA) diet-induced steatohepatitis significantly exacerbated liver damage, fibrosis and reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation. All these manifestations were attenuated in Cygb-overexpressing mice. We produced 6His-tagged recombinant human CYGB (His-CYGB), traced its bio-distribution and assessed its function in HSCs or in mice with advanced liver cirrhosis using thioacetamide (TAA) or 3,5-diethoxycarbonyl-1,4-dihydrocollidine (DDC). In cultured HSCs, extracellular His-CYGB was endocytosed and accumulated in endosomes via clathrin-mediated pathway. His-CYGB significantly impeded ROS formation spontaneously or in the presence of ROS inducers in HSCs, thus leading to the attenuation of collagen type I alpha 1 production and alpha-smooth muscle actin expression. Replacement the iron centre of the heme group with cobalt nullified the effect of His-CYGB. In addition, His-CYGB induced interferon-β secretion by HSCs which partly contributed to its anti-fibrotic function. Momelotinib incompletely reversed the effect of His-CYGB. Intravenously injected His-CYGB markedly suppressed liver inflammation, fibrosis and oxidative cell damage in TAA- or DDC-administered mice without adverse effects. RNA-seq analysis revealed the downregulation of inflammation and fibrosis-related genes and the upregulation of antioxidant genes in both cell culture and liver tissues. The injected His-CYGB predominantly localised to HSCs but not to macrophages, suggesting specific targeting effects. His-CYGB exhibited no toxicity in humanised liver chimeric PXB mice. CONCLUSIONS: His-CYGB could have anti-fibrotic clinical applications for human chronic liver diseases
Conditional deletion of Des1 in the mouse retina does not impair the visual cycle in cones
Cone photoreceptors are essential for vision under moderate to high illuminance and allow color discrimination. Their fast dark adaptation rate and resistance to saturation are believed to depend in part on an intraretinal visual cycle that supplies 11- cis-retinaldehyde to cone opsins. Candidate enzymes of this pathway have been reported, but their physiologic contribution to cone photoresponses remains unknown. Here, we evaluate the role of a candidate retinol isomerase of this pathway, sphingolipid δ4 desaturase 1 (Des1). Single-cell RNA sequencing analysis revealed Des1 expression not only in Müller glia but also throughout the retina and in the retinal pigment epithelium. We assessed cone functional dependence on Müller cell-expressed Des1 through a conditional knockout approach.
