DNA Steganalysis Using Deep Recurrent Neural Networks

Recent advances in next-generation sequencing technologies have facilitated the use of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) as a novel covert channels in steganography. There are various methods that exist in other domains to detect hidden messages in conventional covert channels. However, they have not been applied to DNA steganography. The current most common detection approaches, namely frequency analysis-based methods, often overlook important signals when directly applied to DNA steganography because those methods depend on the distribution of the number of sequence characters. To address this limitation, we propose a general sequence learning-based DNA steganalysis framework. The proposed approach learns the intrinsic distribution of coding and non-coding sequences and detects hidden messages by exploiting distribution variations after hiding these messages. Using deep recurrent neural networks (RNNs), our framework identifies the distribution variations by using the classification score to predict whether a sequence is to be a coding or non-coding sequence. We compare our proposed method to various existing methods and biological sequence analysis methods implemented on top of our framework. According to our experimental results, our approach delivers a robust detection performance compared to other tools

Improvement of a biomechanical telemetry system hardware platform

Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) while playing sports are a major concern for the general public today. Recently, studies have shown that repetitive subconcussive hits can lead to neurological disorders. In order to prevent the athletes from suffering traumatic brain injuries, many organizations related to contact based sports and the military employ commercialized head impact telemetry systems. However, a majority of the commercialized systems is event based which only collects the linear acceleration that exceeds a certain threshold. To accurately record and utilize the data from the impact telemetry system, it is necessary to record all the linear and angular acceleration over time to analyze the relationship between the two data sets. Thus, the Purdue Neurotrauma Group (PNG) members have developed a biomechanical telemetry system for collecting continual data from the accelerometer and gyroscope. PNG’s system is not only capable of storing and monitoring events that exceed a certain threshold, but also capable of storing real-time data that may not meet a given threshold. This study is focused on improving the hardware platform of the existing PNG’s telemetry systems. The objective of this study is to develop a small and low power operational biomechanical telemetry system. Limitations of the current project are discussed, along with possible future developments for the current system

Development and Utilization of Smart Projected Beam Advertising System for Public Transportation

The purpose of this study is to present and develop a practical advertising model that minimizes transport advertisements, indiscriminate banners and flyers, and logo light installation problems with smart advertisements using projected beams. In order to develop an integrated smart advertisement that is convenient and inexpensive for companies operating at night, the scope of the research is determined as a practical advertisement that identifies the problems of existing bus and taxi smart advertisements and the needs of customers. The smart projected beam advertisement that the author claimed is a customized advertisement that solves the advertising problems of customers and local governments in Korea based on business hours, locational information, and big data. The projected beam outdoor advertising system developed by the author was designed to reduce environmental and resource waste, avoid unnecessary advertisement exposure for consumers, and obtain necessary information for businesses. Moreover, it was developed to reduce advertising costs for businesses. This is a very appropriate solution as an alternative to reduce the night time flyers and banners that local governments in Korea are struggling with. Consumers can avoid unnecessary advertisement exposure and obtain customized information, while advertisers who use the service can directly insert their sales information into advertisements in real-time using various media at a low cost
