Mechanical issues of FIREX target under cryogenic environment

    Get PDF
A typical FIREX target is assembled with a 500 ?m diameter PS shell, a glass fill tube and a gold cone guide. Each part is glued together by an epoxy resin. To date, several assembled targets have been cooled down to cryogenic environment. However, they could not survive a cool down process and appeared to rupture around the glued boundary between the PS shell and cone guide. To reveal a crucial factor of the target destruction, its thermal stress after cool down was calculated using the ANSYS code. A two dimensional axisymmetric calculation model is composed of the PS shell and cone guide glued by an epoxy resin which is covered on by an epoxy fillet. A cool down process from 293 K to 10 K was simulated. The calculation showed that the rupture of the shell would start from the PS shell and gold cone guide boundary and the target validity depended on how the epoxy fillet could reinforce the PS shell

Beneficial effect of donor-specific blood transfusions (DST) on living-related kidney allograft survival.

The survival rate of 19 patients who underwent living-related kidney transplantation after donor-specific blood transfusions (DST) was compared with that of 32 historical controls receiving transplants without DST. The graft survival rate of the DST group was 82% after two and three years. The graft survival rate of the DST group was significantly better than the 53% rate after two years obtained with the 32 historical controls (p less than 0.05). We tested sera from 16 DST-treated recipients to study the beneficial effect of DST on kidney allograft survival using the mixed lymphocyte culture (MLC) serum inhibition test. The results demonstrated that MLC inhibitory factors were induced in the serum of the recipient after completion of DST. This inhibition of MLC was observed by treatment of responder lymphocytes with serum obtained three weeks after DST plus rabbit complement. The inhibitory effect was also specific for responder cells in anti-donor MLC. Regarding the correlation with rejection episodes, these MLC inhibitory factors were often observed in the non-rejection group (p less than 0.05). The data suggest that such factors may be anti-idiotypic antibodies and be associated with prolonged graft survival.</p

Immunotherapy by a Slow Delivery System of Interleukin-2 in Mice Model

A sustained release system for interleukin-2 (IL-2), and IL-2 mini-pellet (IL-2 mp), was developed by fusing IL-2 into a needle shaped collagen. Serum concentration of IL-2 after a single subcutaneous injection of the IL-2 mp into C57BL/6 mice remained elevated longer than after an injection of aqueous IL-2. IL-2 in the serum became undetectable by 6h after a subcutaneous injection of 1 x 10(6) unit of IL-2 in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). In contrast, after a single subcutaneous injection of IL-2 mp containing the same amount of IL-2, the concentration of IL-2 increased to its maximum at 6h after injection, then began to decrease gradually. IL-2 was detected even on the third day after a single subcutaneous injection of one IL-2 mp. Augmentation of NK activity and generation of IL-2 activated killer cells were observed in the spleen from day 1--day 3 after a single subcutaneous injection of IL-2 mp into C57BL/6 mice. This activation was not observed following a single subcutaneous injection of the same amount of IL-2 in PBS. Adoptive immunotherapy by a single subcutaneous injection of IL-2 mp followed by intravenous injections of in vitro cultured IL-2 activated killer cells showed better results in decreasing the number of metastases of Lewis lung carcinoma in C57BL/6 mice than immunotherapy using IL-2 solution.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)</p

High Energy Density Physics 52, 101124 (2024); https://doi.org/10.1016/j.hedp.2024.101124.In inertial confinement fusion using central ignition, the ignition hot spot is generated through self-heating during fuel compression. In contrast, fast ignition creates the hot spot through external heating. This difference allows the fast ignition approach to use a solid sphere as the fusion fuel shape. The implosion of a solid sphere is one form of laser-direct-drive slow implosion. Solid sphere fuel exhibits tolerance to hydrodynamic instability and can be mass-produced relatively easily, offering significant advantages for developing inertial fusion energy. Achieving high fuel peak and areal densities of with a solid sphere requires quasi-isentropic compression, which involves multiple shock waves. Our results show the critical role of uniform laser irradiation in initiating weak shock waves in the early phase, which is essential for forming a uniform and dense fuel core with solid spheres. Furthermore, dynamically adjusting the laser spot diameter could be crucial in optimizing the effectiveness of laser-direct-drive and fast ignition techniques when using solid sphere fuel

Fabrication of high-concentration Cu-doped deuterated targets for fast ignition experiments

In high-energy-density physics, including inertial fusion energy using high-power lasers, doping tracer atoms and deuteration of target materials play an important role in diagnosis. For example, a low-concentration Cu dopant acts as an x-ray source for electron temperature detection while a deuterium dopant acts as a neutron source for fusion reaction detection. However, the simultaneous achievement of Cu doping, a deuterated polymer, mechanical toughness and chemical robustness during the fabrication process is not so simple. In this study, we report the successful fabrication of a Cu-doped deuterated target. The obtained samples were characterized by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Simultaneous measurements of Cu K-shell x-ray emission and beam fusion neutrons were demonstrated using a petawatt laser at Osaka University.Ikeda T., Kaneyasu Y., Hosokawa H., et al. The Japanese space gravitational wave antenna; DECIGO

    Get PDF
DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (DECIGO) is the future Japanese space gravitational wave antenna. DECIGO is expected to open a new window of observation for gravitational wave astronomy especially between 0.1 Hz and 10 Hz, revealing various mysteries of the universe such as dark energy, formation mechanism of supermassive black holes, and inflation of the universe. The pre-conceptual design of DECIGO consists of three drag-free spacecraft, whose relative displacements are measured by a differential Fabry– Perot Michelson interferometer. We plan to launch two missions, DECIGO pathfinder and pre- DECIGO first and finally DECIGO in 2024

    DECIGO pathfinder

DECIGO pathfinder (DPF) is a milestone satellite mission for DECIGO (DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory) which is a future space gravitational wave antenna. DECIGO is expected to provide us fruitful insights into the universe, in particular about dark energy, a formation mechanism of supermassive black holes, and the inflation of the universe. Since DECIGO will be an extremely large mission which will formed by three drag-free spacecraft with 1000m separation, it is significant to gain the technical feasibility of DECIGO before its planned launch in 2024. Thus, we are planning to launch two milestone missions: DPF and pre-DECIGO. The conceptual design and current status of the first milestone mission, DPF, are reviewed in this article
