    Analysis of Dual Use of a Trunk Group with Reservation

    This paper considers the traffic aspects of a multitrunk communication system under a dual use of trunks for both direct and store-and-forward (S/F) traffic, in which one trunk is held in reserve for direct traffic. A method of computation, some results for trunk efficiencies and blocking probabilities of direct traffic and also of S/F traffic are presented. Numerical results are obtained for the various cases. The numerical results show that the trunk efficiency of the system can be twice as high as that of the system with no S/F traffic. This is possible without any significant impairment of the grade of service to direct traffic due to mixing S/F traffic. Moreover, in the system, the grade of service of S/F traffic is not significantly impaired due to the trunk held in reserve for direct traffic

    Performance Evaluation of Parallel Sparse Matrix–Vector Products on SGI Altix3700

    Abstract. The present paper discusses scalable implementations of sparse matrix-vector products, which are crucial for high performance solutions of large-scale linear equations, on a cc-NUMA machine SGI Altix3700. Three storage formats for sparse matrices are evaluated, and scalability is attained by implementations considering the page allocation mechanism of the NUMA machine. Influences of the cache/memory bus architectures on the optimum choice of the storage format are examined, and scalable converters between storage formats shown to facilitate exploitation of storage formats of higher performance.

    Millimeter-Thick Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Forests: Hidden Role of Catalyst Support

    A parametric study of so-called "super growth" of single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWNTs) was done by using combinatorial libraries of iron/aluminum oxide catalysts. Millimeter-thick forests of nanotubes grew within 10 min, and those grown by using catalysts with a thin Fe layer (about 0.5 nm) were SWNTs. Although nanotube forests grew under a wide range of reaction conditions such as gas composition and temperature, the window for SWNT was narrow. Fe catalysts rapidly grew nanotubes only when supported on aluminum oxide. Aluminum oxide, which is a well-known catalyst in hydrocarbon reforming, plays an essential role in enhancing the nanotube growth rates.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures. Jpn. J. Appl. Phys.     Posterior Cervical Intramuscular Schwannoma Within the Trapezius Muscle: A Case Report

    Schwannomas are benign soft tissue tumors derived from the Schwann cells of the peripheral nerves. An intramuscular schwannoma arising within the trapezius muscle in the posterior neck is rare. We report a case of a 31-year-old woman with an intramuscular schwannoma in the trapezius muscle. A painless and smooth-surfaced mass from 10 years ago was evident on palpation in the right posterior neck. Ultrasonography revealed an oval mass with clear borders and slight internal blood flow. No continuous hypoechoic lesions were noted at the tip of the mass. Magnetic resonance imaging of the neck revealed a mass in the right posterior cervical trapezius muscle with isointensity on T1-weighted imaging and heterointensity on T2-weighted imaging. Based on these findings, a schwannoma was suspected. Ultrasonography guided fine needle aspiration cytology revealed no significant findings. During surgery, a white-colored, encapsulated-tumor mass was found in the trapezius muscle. Histopathologically, hypocellular and hypercellular areas of fusiform cells were conspicuous, and nuclear palisading was observed in a part of the hypercellular region, confirming the diagnosis of schwannoma. To our knowledge, this is an extremely rare report of an intramuscular schwannoma within the trapezius muscle; herein, we report its clinical, radiological, and pathological features
