    Effect of excitatory and inhibitory agents and a glial inhibitor on optically-recorded primary-afferent excitation

    The effects of GABA, excitatory amino-acid receptors antagonists and a glial metabolism inhibitor on primary-afferent excitation in the spinal dorsal horn were studied by imaging the presynaptic excitation of high-threshold afferents in cord slices from young rats with a voltage-sensitive dye. Primary afferent fibers and terminals were anterogradely labeled with a voltage-sensitive dye from the dorsal root attached to the spinal cord slice. Single-pulse stimulation of C fiber-activating strength to the dorsal root elicited compound action potential-like optical responses in the superficial dorsal horn. The evoked presynaptic excitation was increased by the GABAA receptor antagonists picrotoxin and bicuculline, by glutamate receptor antagonists D-AP5 and CNQX, and by the glial metabolism inhibitor mono-fluoroacetic acid (MFA). The increase in presynaptic excitation by picrotoxin was inhibited in the presence of D-AP5, CNQX and MFA. Presynaptic modulation in the central terminal of fine primary afferents by excitatory and inhibitory amino acids may represent a mechanism that regulates the transmission of pain

    The Effect of Human Walking on Distribution Characteristics of Indoor Particulate Matter

    In modern society, house dust particulate matters pollution had become serious. Ventilation is an important method for removing house dust particulate matters and it is very important to explore the removal efficiency of house dust particulate matters under different ventilation modes. This study analyses the removal effect of house dust particulate matters under the two typical ventilation modes called ceiling exhaust and slit exhaust strategy through experiments and date analysis. In the process of experiments, riboflavin particles were used as the house dust particulate matters, instantaneous microbial detection (IMD) was used to measure the house dust particulate matters. Walking test was carried on after the ventilation system running for some time, which aimed to explore the influence of human behaviour on the house dust particulate matters distribution under two different ventilation modes. It is concluded that larger size particles had larger sedimentation velocity and sedimentation velocity of particles would be faster significantly after the ventilation system working. After walking experiment, particles concentration returned to background concentrations due to the effect of the ventilation system. Particles concentration in slit exhaust strategy was lower than ceiling exhaust so that the effect of slit exhaust strategy is superior to the ceiling exhaust

    SMV displays solve vergenceā€“accommodation conflict

    A conflict between accommodation and vergence is one possible cause of visual fatigue and discomfort while viewing conventional three-dimensional (3D) displays. Previous studies have proposed the super multi-view (SMV) display technique to solve the vergence-accommodation conflict, in which two or more parallax images enter the pupil of the eye with highly directional rays. We simultaneously measured accommodative, vergence and pupillary responses to SMV 3D displays to examine whether they can reduce the conflict. For comparison, responses to two-view stereo images and real objects were also measured. The results show that the range of the accommodative response was increased by the SMV images compared with the two-view images. The slope of the accommodation-vergence response function for the SMV images was similar to that for the real objects rather than the two-view images. We also found that enhancement of the accommodative range by the SMV images is noticeable with binocular viewing, indicating that vergence-induced accommodation plays an important role in viewing SMV displays. These results suggest that SMV displays induced a more natural accommodative response than did conventional, two-view stereo displays. As a result, SMV displays reduced the vergence-accommodation conflict

    Increase of S-100 protein-positive stellate cells in the anterior pituitary of chronic alcoholic patients with fatty liver or fatty cirrhosis.

    Healthy subjects 40 years old were used as controls in a study of stellate cells (S-100 protein-containing cells, or S-100 cells) in subjects with chronic alcoholism and fatty liver or fatty cirrhosis. S-100 cells were sparsely found in the adenohypophysis of control subjects, and these cells sometimes formed small clusters. However, in chronic alcoholics with fatty liver or fatty cirrhosis, the number of stellate cells in the anterior pituitary tended to be 17 times higher than it was in the control group. No increase in the number of S-100 positive cells that constitute the large and small follicles in the intermediate pituitary. The physiological function of the S-100 protein has not yet been identified. The fact that an increase in prolactin-secreting and growth hormone-secreting cells, as well as a decrease in gonadotrophs were observed in the hypophysis of alcoholics suggests that the function of stellate cells may be closely related to these phenomena. Our results also imply that the stellate cells found in the anterior and intermediate pituitary differ in function although they both produce S-100 proteins.</p

    Computational modeling of locoregional recurrence with spatial structure identifies tissue-specific carcinogenic profiles

    IntroductionLocal and regional recurrence after surgical intervention is a significant problem in cancer management. The multistage theory of carcinogenesis precisely places the presence of histologically normal but mutated premalignant lesions surrounding the tumor - field cancerization, as a significant cause of cancer recurrence. The relationship between tissue dynamics, cancer initiation and cancer recurrence in multistage carcinogenesis is not well known.MethodsThis study constructs a computational model for cancer initiation and recurrence by combining the Moran and branching processes in which cells requires 3 or more mutations to become malignant. In addition, a spatial structure-setting is included in the model to account for positional relativity in cell turnover towards malignant transformation. The model consists of a population of normal cells with no mutation; several populations of premalignant cells with varying number of mutations and a population of malignant cells. The model computes a stage of cancer detection and surgery to eliminate malignant cells but spares premalignant cells and then estimates the time for malignant cells to re-emerge.ResultsWe report the cellular conditions that give rise to different patterns of cancer initiation and the conditions favoring a shorter cancer recurrence by analyzing premalignant cell types at the time of surgery. In addition, the model is fitted to disease-free clinical data of 8,957 patients in 27 different cancer types; From this fitting, we estimate the turnover rate per month, relative fitness of premalignant cells, growth rate and death rate of cancer cells in each cancer type.DiscussionOur study provides insights into how to identify patients who are likely to have a shorter recurrence and where to target the therapeutic intervention

    EMG activity during 2000 m rowing

    This study aimed to clarify the changes in the activity of the trunk and lower limb muscles during 2000-m rowing. Ten male rowers performed a 2000-m race simulation on a rowing ergometer. Electromyography results of the abdominal muscles, back muscles, gluteus maximus (GMax), biceps femoris (BF), and rectus femoris (RF) were recorded. The electromyographic activity during the three strokes after the start (initial stage), at 1000m (middle stage), and before the end (final stage) were analyzed. From the handle position, the rowing motion was divided into five phases (early-drive, middle-drive, late-drive, early-recovery, and late-recovery). The peak activities of the abdominal muscles, back muscles, GMax, and BF in each stroke of the rowing motion were delayed at the middle and final stages compared to the initial stage (P < 0.05). The peak activity of the RF was observed in the late-drive phase at the initial stage, whereas a high RF activity was observed in the middle-drive phase at the middle and final stages (P < 0.05). Considering the results of the activity of the back muscles and RF, RF muscular endurance enhancement may lead to a decrease in the load on the back muscles and help prevent muscular low back pain in rowers

    Using NU-KNITĀ® for hemostasis around recurrent laryngeal nerve during transthoracic esophagectomy with lymphadenectomy for esophageal cancer

    BACKGROUND: We thought that using electrocautery for hemostasis caused recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy. We reflected the prolonged use of electrocautery and employed NU-KNITĀ® to achieve hemostasis nearby the recurrent laryngeal nerve. We assessed that using NU-KNITĀ® hemostasis prevented or not postoperative recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy, retrospectively. The present study was evaluated to compare using electrocautery hemostasis with using NU-KNITĀ® hemostasis during lymphadenectomy along recurrent laryngeal nerve. The variables compared were morbidity rate of recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy, operation time, and blood loss. RESULTS: We use NU-KNITĀ® to achieve hemostasis without strong compression. This group is named group N. On the other hand, we use electrocautery to achieve hemostasis. This group is named group E. Complication rate of recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy was higher in group E (55.6%) than group N (5.3%) (pā€‰=ā€‰0.007). CONCLUSIONS: Even hemostasis using NU-KNITĀ® was slightly more time-consuming than using electrocautery, we concluded that it would be useful to prevent recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy
