There is no doubt that many people feel the peace of mind or the pleasures of senses in appreciating music. But the estimation of the effect is very difficult and the objective estimation can be hardly done. This study proposed the objective estimating method of human emotion utilizing galvanic skin reflex (GSR) which reflects a human psychological activity. In this method, not by individual response, but by the series of response and pattern of appearance of GSR, the emotional response under appreciating music was investigated. In the case of appreciation of the same classic music to several subjects, the individual GSR responses are random and remarkable characteristic could not be find on the results. However, on the patterns of appearance of GSR, the patterns obtaining from the same generation are much similar each other and the patterns obtaining from different generation are less similar. It was cleared that the same music gave different effect on different generations

The determination of impedance can be performed by means of a frequency-domain analysis or a time-domain analysis. The latter has the advantage of being able to measure instantaneously all the frequency characteristics of impedance. The method is hence well suited to obtain the biological impedance which changes with time. An instantaneous method of measuring skin impedance, by using time-domain analysis has thus been developed. The fast Fourier transform (FFT) of the step response for current to the skin can determine the palm impedance. This method can carry out the determination of the parameters of the palm skin impedance during a galvanic skin reflex (GSR), which is impossible by means of frequency-domain analysis </p

    Ring-Opening Polymerization of Hemoglobin.

Hemoglobin (Hb), an oxygen-carrying protein, has an Ī±ā‚‚Ī²ā‚‚ tetrameric structure that dissociates reversibly into two Ī±Ī² dimers (Ī±ā‚‚Ī²ā‚‚ ā‡„ 2Ī±Ī²). We synthesized a cyclic Hb-ring monomer with two Ī² subunits bound through a 10 kDa polyethylene glycol (PEG) chain. The monomer induced ring-opening polymerization to produce a supramolecular polymer via intersubunit interaction of Ī±Ī² dimers of an Hb molecule at the PEG terminals. Both the ring-closed monomer and the ring-opened supramolecular polymer were then fixed covalently by intramolecular cross-linking of two Ī² subunits. Quantification of fixed products at various monomer concentrations revealed the equilibrium constant (K), a ratio of propagation and depropagation rate constants, as 5.68 mMā»Ā¹. The average degree of polymerization (DP) increased proportionally, concomitantly with the initial monomer concentration. Hb polymer with DP = 13.2 (Mn = ca.1 MDa) was obtained by cross-linking at 2.33 mM. Our novel strategy of ring-opening polymerization of Hb will eventually realize a highly aligned and efficiently polymerized Hb for creating artificial oxygen carriers for a clinical use. This document is the Accepted Manuscript version of a Published Work that appeared in final form in Biomacromolecules, copyright Ā© American Chemical Society after peer review and technical editing by the publisher. Crystal Growth of Bi2_{2}Sr2_{2}CaCu2_{2}O8+Ī“_{8+{\delta}} Whiskers from Pulverized Amorphous Precursors

High-transition temperature superconducting whiskers of Bi2_{2}Sr2_{2}CaCu2_{2}O8+Ī“_{8+{\delta}} were successfully grown from pulverized amorphous precursors. The obtained whiskers revealed a typical composition and diffraction patterns of a superconducting Bi-2212 phase. The whiskers from tiny precursors exhibit a spiral feature, suggesting a contribution from the growth mechanism of both vapor-liquid-solid and compressive stress models. The proposed method provides longer whiskers against the growth period, compared with that from conventional root-growth method

A Non-Humanoid Robot in the ā€œUncanny Valleyā€: Experimental Analysis of the Reaction to Behavioral Contingency in 2ā€“3 Year Old Children

Infants' sensitivity to social or behavioral contingency has been examined in the field of developmental psychology and behavioral sciences, mainly using a double video paradigm or a still face paradigm. These studies have shown that infants distinguish other individuals' contingent behaviors from non-contingent ones. The present experiment systematically examined if this ability extends to the detection of non-humanoids' contingent actions in a communicative context. We examined two- to three-year-olds' understanding of contingent actions produced by a non-humanoid robot. The robot either responded contingently to the actions of the participants (contingent condition) or programmatically reproduced the same sequence of actions to another participant (non-contingent condition). The results revealed that the participants exhibited different patterns of response depending on whether or not the robot responded contingently. It was also found that the participants did not respond positively to the contingent actions of the robot in the earlier periods of the experimental sessions. This might reflect the conflict between the non-humanlike appearance of the robot and its humanlike contingent actions, which presumably led the children to experience the uncanny valley effect
