Vacuum Effects and Compressional Properties of Nuclear Matter in Cutoff Field Theory

Including the vacuum effects, the compressional properties of nuclear matter are studied in the cutoff field theory. Under the Hartree approximation, the low-energy effective Lagrangian is derived in the framework of the renormalization group methods. The coefficients are determined in a way where the physical results hardly depend on the value of the cutoff which is conveniently introduced into the theory. It is shown that, to reproduce the empirical data of the nucleus incompressibility, the compressibility of the nuclear matter is favorable to be 250\sim350MeV.Comment: PACS numbers, 21.65.+

Experience with the Vibrant Soundbridge RW-Coupler for round window Vibroplasty with tympanosclerosis

Usage of the Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB) with round window (RW)-Coupler placement at the RW has been shown to successfully treat mixed hearing loss. Coupling between the VSB's floating mass transducer (FMT) and the RW membrane is difficult in the case of sclerosis in the RW and drilling down the bony lip until the RW membrane can be seen completely can possibly induce a perilymphatic fistula. A 68-year-old woman who had bilateral mixed hearing loss with sclerosis in the RW due to tympanosclerosis underwent a RW-Vibroplasty with a RW-Coupler. Speech discrimination scores in quiet and noise and functional gain with the VSB with RW-Coupler were better than those using a conventional hearing aid. The results of the present case have shown the feasibility of implanting a VSB with RW-Coupler in patients with mixed hearing loss due to tympanosclerosis.ArticleACTA OTO-LARYNGOLOGICA. 132(6):676-682 (2012)journal articl

Chirality-selected crystal growth and spin polarization over centimeters of transition metal disilicide crystals

We performed a chirality-controlled crystal growth of transition metal disilicide NbSi2_{2} and TaSi2_{2} by using a laser-diode-heated floating zone (LDFZ) method. The crystal chirality was evaluated in the crystals of centimeters in length by performing single crystal X-ray diffraction as well as probing a spin polarization originating from chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect. The crystals of right-handed NbSi2_{2} and of left-handed TaSi2_{2} were obtained in the conventional LDFZ crystal growth, while the left-handed NbSi2_{2} and right-handed TaSi2_{2} crystals were grown by the LDFZ method with the composition-gradient feed rods. The spin polarization via the CISS was observed over centimeters in the NbSi2_{2} single crystals and the sign of the CISS signals was dependent on the chirality of crystals. The correlation between the crystal chirality and CISS signals indicates that the CISS measurements work as a non-destructive method for chirality determination even in centimeter-long specimens.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

Contribution of histone N-terminal tails to the structure and stability of nucleosomes

AbstractHistones are the protein components of the nucleosome, which forms the basic architecture of eukaryotic chromatin. Histones H2A, H2B, H3, and H4 are composed of two common regions, the “histone fold” and the “histone tail”. Many efforts have been focused on the mechanisms by which the post-translational modifications of histone tails regulate the higher-order chromatin architecture. On the other hand, previous biochemical studies have suggested that histone tails also affect the structure and stability of the nucleosome core particle itself. However, the precise contributions of each histone tail are unclear. In the present study, we determined the crystal structures of four mutant nucleosomes, in which one of the four histones, H2A, H2B, H3, or H4, lacked the N-terminal tail. We found that the deletion of the H2B or H3 N-terminal tail affected histone–DNA interactions and substantially decreased nucleosome stability. These findings provide important information for understanding the complex roles of histone tails in regulating chromatin structure

Circulating Malondialdehyde-Modified LDL-Related Variables and Coronary Artery Stenosis in Asymptomatic Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

Aims. To elucidate the levels of malondialdehyde-modified LDL (MDA-LDL)-related variables for predicting coronary artery stenosis (CAS) by coronary CT angiography (CCTA) in asymptomatic patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Methods. Enrolled were 36 Japanese patients with T2DM who underwent CCTA and in whom MDA-LDL levels were measured. Definition of CAS was luminal narrowing of ≥50%. Trends through tertiles of each MDA-LDL-related variable were analyzed with a general linear model. The ability of each MDA-LDL-related variable to predict CAS was compared to areas under the curve (AUCs) in receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis. Results. Seventeen patients had CAS. Each MDA-LDL-related variable was an independent predictor of CAS (P=0.039 for MDALDL, P=0.013 for MDA-LDL/LDL-C, P=0.047 for MDA-LDL/HDL-C, and P=0.013 for (MDA-LDL/LDL-C)/HDL-C). AUCs of MDA-LDL, MDA-LDL/LDL-C, MDA-LDL/HDL-C, and (MDA-LDL/LDL-C)/HDL-C were 0.675 (95% CI 0.496–0.854), 0.765 (0.602–0.927), 0.752 (0.592–0.913), and 0.799 (0.643–0.955), respectively, for predicting CAS. Trends throughout the tertiles showed significant associations between MDA-LDL/LDL-C, MDA-LDL/HDL-C, or (MDALDL/LDL-C)/HDL-C and CAS (P=0.003 for MDA-LDL/LDL-C, P=0.042 for MDA-LDL/HDL-C, and P=0.001 for (MDA-LDL/LDL-C)/HDL-C). Conclusions. Data suggest that measurements of MDA-LDL/LDL-C, MDA-LDL/HDLC, and (MDA-LDL/LDL-C)/HDL-C are useful for predicting CAS

Identification of the human eosinophil lineage-committed progenitor: revision of phenotypic definition of the human common myeloid progenitor

To establish effective therapeutic strategies for eosinophil-related disorders, it is critical to understand the developmental pathway of human eosinophils. In mouse hematopoiesis, eosinophils originate from the eosinophil lineage-committed progenitor (EoP) that has been purified downstream of the granulocyte/macrophage progenitor (GMP). We show that the EoP is also isolatable in human adult bone marrow. The previously defined human common myeloid progenitor (hCMP) population (Manz, M.G., T. Miyamoto, K. Akashi, and I.L. Weissman. 2002. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA. 99:11872–11877) was composed of the interleukin 5 receptor α chain+ (IL-5Rα+) and IL-5Rα− fractions, and the former was the hEoP. The IL-5Rα+CD34+CD38+IL-3Rα+CD45RA− hEoPs gave rise exclusively to pure eosinophil colonies but never differentiated into basophils or neutrophils. The IL-5Rα− hCMP generated the hEoP together with the hGMP or the human megakaryocyte/erythrocyte progenitor (hMEP), whereas hGMPs or hMEPs never differentiated into eosinophils. Importantly, the number of hEoPs increased up to 20% of the conventional hCMP population in the bone marrow of patients with eosinophilia, suggesting that the hEoP stage is involved in eosinophil differentiation and expansion in vivo. Accordingly, the phenotypic definition of hCMP should be revised to exclude the hEoP; an “IL-5Rα–negative” criterion should be added to define more homogenous hCMP. The newly identified hEoP is a powerful tool in studying pathogenesis of eosinophilia and could be a therapeutic target for a variety of eosinophil-related disorders
