    Polarized light-flavor antiquarks from Drell-Yan processes of h+\vec{N}\to\vec{l^{+-}} + l^{-+} + X

We propose a formula to determine the first moment of difference between the polarized uˉ\bar u- and dˉ\bar d-quarks in the nucleon, {\it i.e.} Δuˉ−Δdˉ\Delta\bar u-\Delta \bar d from the Drell-Yan processes in collisions of unpolarized hadrons with longitudinally polarized nucleons by measuring outgoing lepton helicities. As coefficients in the differential cross section depend on the uu- and dd-quark numbers in the unpolarized hadron beam, the difference Δuˉ−Δdˉ\Delta\bar u-\Delta\bar d can be independently tested by changing the hadron beam. Moreover, a formula for estimating the KK-factor in Drell-Yan processes is also suggested.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figur

Complete 0 hbar omega calculations of Gamow-Teller strengths for nuclei in the iron region

    Get PDF
Gamow-Teller strengths for selected nuclei in the iron region (A~56) have been investigated via shell-model Monte Carlo calculations with realistic interactions in the complete fp basis. Results for all cases show significant quenching relative to single-particle estimates, in quantitative agreement with (n,p) data. The J=1,T=0 residual interaction and the f_{7/2}-f_{5/2} spin-orbit splitting are shown to play major roles in the quenching mechanism. Calculated B(E2, 2^+_1 -> 0^+_1) values are in fair agreement with experiment using effective charges of e_p=1.1e and e_n=0.1e.Comment: 13 pages + 1 postscript file, Caltech preprint MAP-16

A proposed measurement of the ß asymmetry in neutron decay with the Los Alamos Ultra-Cold Neutron Source

    Get PDF
This article reviews the status of an experiment to study the neutron spin-electron angular correlation with the Los Alamos Ultra-Cold Neutron (UCN) source. The experiment will generate UCNs from a novel solid deuterium, spallation source, and polarize them in a solenoid magnetic field. The experiment spectrometer will consist of a neutron decay region in a solenoid magnetic field combined with several different detector possibilities. An electron beam and a magnetic spectrometer will provide a precise, absolute calibration for these detectors. An A-correlation measurement with a relative precision of 0.2% is expected by the end of 2002

Production and optical properties of liquid scintillator for the JSNS2^{2} experiment

The JSNS2^{2} (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment will search for neutrino oscillations over a 24 m short baseline at J-PARC. The JSNS2^{2} inner detector will be filled with 17 tons of gadolinium-loaded liquid scintillator (LS) with an additional 31 tons of unloaded LS in the intermediate Îł\gamma-catcher and outer veto volumes. JSNS2^{2} has chosen Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) as an organic solvent because of its chemical properties. The unloaded LS was produced at a refurbished facility, originally used for scintillator production by the RENO experiment. JSNS2^{2} plans to use ISO tanks for the storage and transportation of the LS. In this paper, we describe the LS production, and present measurements of its optical properties and long term stability. Our measurements show that storing the LS in ISO tanks does not result in degradation of its optical properties.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

From non-symmetric particle systems to non-linear PDEs on fractals

We present new results and challenges in obtaining hydrodynamic limits for non-symmetric (weakly asymmetric) particle systems (exclusion processes on pre-fractal graphs) converging to a non-linear heat equation. We discuss a joint density-current law of large numbers and a corresponding large deviations principle.Comment: v2: 10 pages, 1 figure. Structure functions in the polarized Drell-Yan processes with spin-1/2 and spin-1 hadrons: II. parton model

We analyze the polarized Drell-Yan processes with spin-1/2 and spin-1 hadrons in a parton model. Quark and antiquark correlation functions are expressed in terms of possible combinations of Lorentz vectors and pseudovectors with the constrains of Hermiticity, parity conservation, and time-reversal invariance. Then, we find tensor polarized distributions for a spin-1 hadron. The naive parton model predicts that there exist 19 structure functions. However, there are only four or five non-vanishing structure functions, depending on whether the cross section is integrated over the virtual-photon transverse momentum \vec Q_T or the limit Q_T->0 is taken. One of the finite structure functions is related to the tensor polarized distribution b_1, and it does not exist in the proton-proton reactions. The vanishing structure functions should be associated with higher-twist physics. The tensor distributions can be measured by the quadrupole polarization measurements. The Drell-Yan process has an advantage over the lepton reaction in the sense that the antiquark tensor polarization could be extracted rather easily.Comment: 27 pages, REVTeX, amsmath.sty, epsfig.sty, revtex.cls, 2 eps figures.
