Vitamin B12 measurements across neurodegenerative disorders.
Background:Vitamin B12 deficiency causes a number of neurological features including cognitive and psychiatric disturbances, gait instability, neuropathy, and autonomic dysfunction. Clinical recognition of B12 deficiency in neurodegenerative disorders is more challenging because it causes defects that overlap with expected disease progression. We sought to determine whether B12 levels at the time of diagnosis in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) differed from those in patients with other neurodegenerative disorders. Methods:We performed a cross-sectional analysis of B12 levels obtained around the time of diagnosis in patients with PD, Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB), Alzheimer's disease (AD), Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD), or Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). We also evaluated the rate of B12 decline in PD, AD, and MCI. Results:In multivariable analysis adjusted for age, sex, and B12 supplementation, we found that B12 levels were significantly lower at time of diagnosis in patients with PD than in patients with PSP, FTD, and DLB. In PD, AD, and MCI, the rate of B12 decline ranged from - 17 to - 47 pg/ml/year, much greater than that reported for the elderly population. Conclusions:Further studies are needed to determine whether comorbid B12 deficiency affects progression of these disorders
Establishment and characterization of single and triple‐agent resistant osteosarcoma cell lines
Two human osteosarcoma cell lines (MG-63 and HOS-143B) are developed into drug-resistant models using a short-term drug exposure and recovery in drug-free media. Cisplatin, doxorubicin, and methotrexate are used as single agents and in triple combination. The highest level of resistance to cisplatin is observed in MG-63/CISR8, doxorubicin in HOS-143B/DOXR8, and methotrexate in HOS-143B/MTXR8. The MG-63/TRIR8 and HOS-143B/TRIR8 tripleresistance models show lower levels of resistance to combination treatment and are not resistant to the drugs individually. Apoptosis assays suggest that the resistance in MG-63/TRIR8 isfrom cisplatin and methotrexate and not doxorubicin. In contrast, the resistance in HOS-143B/TRIR8 is from doxorubicin and methotrexate instead of cisplatin. Upregulation of P-glycoprotein is seen in all resistant models except those developed with single-agent methotrexate. However, P-glycoprotein is not causing resistance in all cell lines as the inhibitor elacridar only reverses the resistance of doxorubicin on MG-63/ DOXR8 and HOS-143B/TRIR8. The migration of the MG-63 resistant models is significantly increased, their invasion rate tends to increase, and RT-PCR shows a switch from epithelial to mesenchymal gene signaling. In contrast, a significant decrease in migration is seen in HOS-143B resistant models with their invasion rate tending to decrease and a switch from mesenchymal to epithelial gene signaling

We report an analysis of seven Apollo 14 Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package (ALSEP) Suprathermal Ion Detector Experiment (SIDE) "resonance" events from January 1972 through January 1973. The events appear to be associated with traversals of the Moon through the terrestrial bow shock
Magnetoroton scattering by phonons in the fractional quantum Hall regime
Motivated by recent phonon spectroscopy experiments in the fractional quantum
Hall regime we consider processes in which thermally excited magnetoroton
excitations are scattered by low energy phonons. We show that such scattering
processes can never give rise to dissociation of magnetorotons into unbound
charged quasiparticles as had been proposed previously. In addition we show
that scattering of magnetorotons to longer wavelengths by phonon absorption is
possible because of the shape of the magnetoroton dispersion curve and it is
shown that there is a characteristic cross-over temperature above which the
rate of energy transfer to the electron gas changes from an exponential
(activated) to a power law dependence on the effective phonon temperature.Comment: LaTex document, 3 eps figures. submitted to Phys Rev
Rotary honing: a variant of the Taylor paint-scraper problem
The three-dimensional Row in a corner of fixed angle α induced by the rotation in its plane of one of the boundaries is considered. A local similarity solution valid in a neighbourhood of the centre of rotation is obtained and the streamlines are shown to be closed curves. The effects of inertia are considered and are shown to be significant in a small neighbourhood of the plane of symmetry of the flow. A simple experiment confirms that the streamlines are indeed nearly closed; their projections on planes normal to the line of intersection of the boundaries are precisely the \u27Taylor\u27 streamlines of the well-known \u27paint-scraper\u27 problem. Three geometrical variants are considered: (i) when the centre of rotation of the lower plate is offset from the contact line; (ii) when both planes rotate with different angular velocities about a vertical axis and Coriolis effects are retained in the analysis; and (iii) when two vertical planes intersecting at an angle 2β are honed by a rotating conical boundary. The last is described by a similarity solution of the first kind (in the terminology of Barenblatt) which incorporates within its structure a similarity solution of the second kind involving corner eddies of a type familiar in two-dimensional corner flows
Circinus X-1: survivor of a highly asymmetric supernova
We have analyzed the kinematical parameters of Cir X-1 to constrain the
nature of its companion star, the eccentricity of the binary and the
pre-supernova parameter space. We argue that the companion is most likely to be
a low-mass (< 2.0 M_sun) unevolved star and that the eccentricity of the orbit
is 0.94 +/- 0.04. We have evaluated the dynamical effects of the supernova
explosion and we find it must have been asymmetric. On average, we find that a
kick of 740 km/s is needed to account for the recently measured radial velocity
of +430 km/s (Johnston, Fender & Wu) for this extreme system. The corresponding
minimum kick velocity is 500 km/s. This is the largest kick needed to explain
the motion of any observed binary system. If Cir X-1 is associated with the
supernova remnant G321.9-0.3 then we find a limiting minimum age of this
remnant of 60000 yr. Furthermore, we predict that the companion star has lost
10% of its mass as a result of stripping and ablation from the impact of the

Traffic agents for improving QoS in mixed infrastructure and ad hoc modes wireless LAN
As an important complement to infrastructured wireless networks, mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) are more flexible in providing wireless access services, but more difficult in meeting different quality of service (QoS) requirements for mobile customers. Both infrastructure and ad hoc network structures are supported in wireless local area networks (WLAN), which can offer high data-rate wireless multimedia services to the mobile stations (MSs) in a limited geographical area. For those out-of-coverage MSs, how to effectively connect them to the access point (AP) and provide QoS support is a challenging issue. By mixing the infrastructure and the ad hoc modes in WLAN, we propose in this paper a new coverage improvement scheme that can identify suitable idle MSs in good service zones as traffic agents (TAs) to relay traffic from those out-of-coverage MSs to the AP. The service coverage area of WLAN is then expanded. The QoS requirements (e.g., bandwidth) of those MSs are considered in the selection process of corresponding TAs. Mathematical analysis, verified by computer simulations, shows that the proposed TA scheme can effectively reduce blocking probability when traffic load is light
