Zero-mode wave functions by localized gauge fluxes

We study chiral zero-mode wave functions on blow-up manifolds of T2/ZNT^2/Z_N orbifolds with both bulk and localized magnetic flux backgrounds. We introduce a singular gauge transformation in order to remove ZNZ_N phases for ZNZ_N twisted boundary condition of matter fields. We compute wave functions of not only bulk zero modes but also localized modes at the orbifold singular points, which correspond to new zero modes induced by localized flux. By studying their Yukawa couplings, it turns out that only three patterns of Yukawa couplings are allowed. Our theory has a specific coupling selection rule.Comment: 22 pages, 3 figure

Index theorem on magnetized blow-up manifold of T2/ZNT^2/\mathbb{Z}_N

We investigate blow-up manifolds of T2/ZN(N=2,3,4,6)T^2/{\mathbb{Z}}_N\,(N=2,3,4,6) orbifolds with magnetic flux MM. Since the blow-up manifolds have no singularities, we can apply the Atiyah-Singer index theorem to them. Then, we establish the zero-mode counting formula n+n=(MV+)/N+1n_{+}-n_{-}=(M-V_{+})/N+1, where V+V_{+} denotes the sum of winding numbers at fixed points on the T2/ZNT^2/{\mathbb{Z}}_N orbifolds, as the Atiyah-Singer index theorem on the orbifolds, and clarify physical and geometrical meanings of the formula.Comment: 26 pages, 3 figure

A Case of a Giant Congenital Melanocytic Nevus Treated by Curettage with the Application of Cultured Epidermal Autografts before 6 Months of Age

Curettage is common in the treatment of a giant congenital melanocytic nevus (GCMN) in infants and should generally be performed before 6 months of age. Post-curettage retarded epithelialization often interferes with the ability to perform multiple operations within a short interval, and thus, it is difficult to treat large lesions in the neonatal period. We herein report a case of a GCMN comprising 20% of the total body surface area, which required multi-stage curettage, in which a cultured epithelial autograft was used to promote epithelialization of the post-curettage wound. The patient was a 1-month-old boy with a GCMN in his head, neck, chest, back, buttock, left upper arm, and a few satellite lesions. A four-stage operation was performed between 3 and 6 months of age; the cultured epithelial autograft took well after each operation, and complete epithelialization was observed at postoperative days 20, 23, 27, and 12, respectively. Seven months after the last surgery, hypertrophic scar formation was only observed in a small area of the left upper arm without axillary contracture. The color of the treated area improved, except for slight partial re-pigmentation. A skin biopsy was obtained from the re-pigmented area. The results demonstrated that nevus cells remained in the basal layer of the epidermis, hair follicles, and deep layer of the remaining dermis, suggesting that the recurrent nevus cells in the regenerated epidermis migrated from hair follicles. We conclude that the combination of curettage and the application of a cultured epithelial autograft is a promising option for GCMN treatment

Yeast functional screen to identify genes conferring salt stress tolerance in Salicornia europaea

Salinity is a critical environmental factor that adversely affects crop productivity. Halophytes have evolved various mechanisms to adapt to saline environments. Salicornia europaea L. is one of the most salt-tolerant plant species. It does not have special salt-secreting structures like a salt gland or salt bladder, and is therefore a good model for studying the common mechanisms underlying plant salt tolerance. To identify candidate genes encoding key proteins in the mediation of salt tolerance in S. europaea, we performed a functional screen of a cDNA library in yeast. The library was screened for genes that allowed the yeast to grow in the presence of 1.3 M NaCl. We obtained three full-length S. europaea genes that confer salt tolerance. The genes are predicted to encode (1) a novel protein highly homologous to thaumatin-like proteins, (2) a novel coiled-coil protein of unknown function, and (3) a novel short peptide of 32 residues. Exogenous application of a synthetic peptide corresponding to the 32 residues improved salt tolerance of Arabidopsis. The approach described in this report provides a rapid assay system for large-scale screening of S. europaea genes involved in salt stress tolerance and supports the identification of genes responsible for such mechanisms. These genes may be useful candidates for improving crop salt tolerance by genetic transformation

ARICA: Demonstration of a Real-time Gamma-Ray Bursts Alert System using the Commercial Satellite Networks

    Get PDF
We demonstrate the real-time alert system of the transient astronomical sources such as cosmic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) using two commercial satellite network devices. One is the Iridium’s Short Burst Data (SBD) and the other is the Globalstar’s STX-3. Although these satellite communication devices have been used in the space environment, it still needs to verify whether the network can be used as a GRB alert system. We are currently developing a 1U CubeSat called AGU Remote Innovative CubeSat Alert system (ARICA) which contains both SBD and STX-3 to demonstrate the real-time GRB alert system. The ARICA has been selected as the JAXA Innovative Satellite Technology Demonstration-2 and scheduled to be launched in the Japanese fiscal year 2021

We present the flight model development of the 1U CubeSat, AGU Remote Innovative CubeSat Alert system (ARICA), which is scheduled to be launched in the Japanese fiscal year 2021 as the JAXA Innovative Satellite Technology Demonstration-2 project. The main goal of ARICA is to demonstrate the real-time alert system of the transient astronomical sources using commercial satellite network devices. The development of the flight components has been finished in April 2021. The thermal vacuum test was conducted at the end of April 2021. The vibration and shock tests were performed in May 2021. We are currently in the final stage of the development of ARICA to be ready for launch

Abnormal Cystatin C Levels in Two Patients with Bardet-Biedl Syndrome

Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by central obesity, mental impairment, rod-cone dystrophy, polydactyly, hypogonadism in males, and renal abnormalities. The causative genes have been identified as BBS1-14. In the Western countries, the prevalence of this disease ranges from 1/13,500 to 1/160,000, while only a few Japanese patients have been reported in the English-language literature. The incidence of renal dysfunction or anomalies in previous reports varies considerably ranging from ∼20% to universal occurrence. We here report that two Japanese patients who had BBS with normal BUN and creatinine levels had elevated levels of cystatin C, a sensitive marker of glomerular filtration rate. A urine albumin level increased only in the elder patient. Thus, cystatin C may be useful for detecting renal abnormalities in patients with an apparent normal renal function. Because this disease is diagnosed by accumulation of symptoms, such a sensitive marker might help early diagnosis of BBS
