    Unintentional Injury Deaths among Children: A Descriptive Study Using Medico-legal Documents in Okayama Prefecture, Japan (2001−2015)

    According to the World Health Organization’s World Report, approx. 950,000 children and young people < 18 years old die from an injury each year, and unintentional injury deaths account for a large portion of these cases. Here we used medico-legal documents to epidemiologically analyze the cases of unintentional injury deaths among children < 5 years old in Okayama Prefecture, Japan from 2001 to 2015. Age, sex, manner/cause of death, and various circumstances of the incident were investigated. There were 73 unintentional injury deaths during the study period. Drowning (n=29), suffocation (n=24), and transport accidents (n=13) were the major categories of unintentional injury deaths. Twenty-two cases (30.1%) were autopsied. Differences in the characteristics of the unintentional injury deaths by age were observed. Information which cannot be obtained from Vital Statistics was available from medico-legal documents, and detailed characteristics of unintentional injury deaths among children < 5 years old were elucidated. Investigating medico-legal information is one of the meaningful measures for the prevention of unintentional injury deaths among children in Japan

    Confinement in nanoscaled porous materials changes properties of water significantly. We perform molecular dynamics simulations of water in a model of a nanobrush made of carbon nanotubes. Water crystallizes into a novel structure called dtc in the nanobrush when (6,6) nanotubes are located in a triangular arrangement, and there is a space that can accommodate two layers of water molecules between the tubes. The mechanism of the solidification is analogous to formation of gas hydrates: hydrophobic molecules promote crystallization when their arrangement matches ordered structures of water. This is supported by a statistical mechanical calculation, which bears resemblance to the theory on the clathrate hydrate stability

    Granulocyte Colony-Stimulating Factor-Producing Gallbladder Cancer

    We report a case of a granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF)-producing gallbladder tumor associated with fever in a middle-aged female. Preoperative blood analysis showed leukocytosis with elevated levels of C-reactive protein and G-CSF. We resected the liver at S4a+S5, with regional lymph node dissection and partial resection of the duodenum. Histology revealed undifferentiated carcinoma with spindle and giant cells and papillary adenocarcinoma. Immunohistochemistry revealed Stage IIIB G-CSF-producing gallbladder cancer. Postoperatively, leukocyte and serum G-CSF levels decreased to within normal limits. Adjuvant gemcitabine chemotherapy was administered for 16 months, and she has been recurrence-free for 48 months

    Infusion of angiotensin II reduces loss of glomerular capillary area in the early phase of anti-Thy-1.1 nephritis possibly via regulating angiogenesis-associated factors.BackgroundAlthough angiotensin II (Ang II) is involved in the progression of renal diseases, infusion of Ang II was reported to surprisingly ameliorate the early phase of anti-Thy-1.1 nephritis (Wenzel et al,Kidney Int 61:1020, 2002). Considering the known proangiogenic effect of Ang II and that angiogenic glomerular capillary repair is required for the recovery of damaged glomeruli in rat anti-Thy-1.1 nephritis, we hypothesized that Ang II infusion starting prior to the initiation of nephritis may induce the expression of angiogenic growth factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and angiopoietin-1 (Ang-1), resulting in the increased glomerular capillary area in the early phase.MethodsAng II was infused (170ng/min) in rats, and 5 days later, nephritis was induced by the administration of monoclonal 1-22-3 antibodies. Ang II type 1 or type 2 receptor antagonist (AT1R or AT2R, respectively) (losartan or PD123319, respectively) was coadministered.ResultsAng II infusion affected on neither the deposition of Ig nor mesangiolysis in the initial phase, and resulted in the aggravation of creatinine clearance at day 14 and 35 after initiating anti-Thy-1.1 nephritis. Histologic alterations were ameliorated accompanied by reduced loss in rat endothelial cell antigen (RECA)-1(+) endothelial area in Ang II-infused nephritic rats on day 6 and 14 as compared to control nephritic group, and nephritic alterations were mostly resolved on day 35 in both groups. At the early stage (day 6), glomerular expression of VEGF and receptors flk-1 and flt-1 as well as Ang-1, and receptor Tie2 were increased, and glomerular monocyte infiltration and the expression of angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2), a natural antagonist of Ang-1, were reduced. Both Ang II receptors were involved in the regulation of angiogenic factors and receptors.ConclusionThese results demonstrate that infusion of exogenous Ang II starting prior to the induction of nephritis activates VEGF and Ang-1 signaling regulated via both Ang II receptors, potentially leading to the accelerated recovery of injured glomerular endothelial cells in the early phase of anti-Thy-1.1 nephritis. Increased expression of VEGF and Ang-1 on podocytes further suggests the crucial association of endothelial cells and podocytes in maintaining proper glomerular capillary structures

    Coherent Relation between Structure and Conduction of Infinite Atomic Wires

    We demonstrate a theoretical analysis concerning the geometrical structures and electrical conduction of infinite monatomic gold and aluminum wires in the process of their elongation, based on first-principles molecular-dynamics simulations using the real-space finite-difference method. Our study predicts that the single-row gold wire ruptures up to form a dimer coupling structure when the average interatomic distance increases up to more than 3.0 A, and that the wire is conductive before breaking but changes to an insulator at the rupturing point. In the case of the alumi-num wire, it exhibits a magnetic ordering due to the spin polarization, and even when stretched up to the average interatomic distance of 3.5 A, a dimerization does not oc-cur and the wire keeps a metallic nature.Comment: 10 pages and 6 figures. accepted to Nanotechnolog

    Salivary Mucocele in a Laboratory Beagle

    The histologic characteristics of a salivary mucocele in a beagle used in a toxicity study are described in this report. A pale yellowish cyst under the mandibular skin containing frothy mucus was observed at necropsy. Microscopically, numerous villous projections arose from the internal surface of the cyst and were lined by stratified epithelial-like macrophages, which were immunopositive for macrophage scavenger receptor A. A ruptured sublingual interlobar duct connected to the lumen was observed near the cyst. Luminal amorphous material showed a positive reaction with Alcian blue and periodic acid-Schiff staining as did mucin in the sublingual gland. Ultrastructurally, the epithelial-like macrophages had numerous vacuoles containing electron-lucent material, which was presumed to be lysosomal in origin, and had pseudopods on their cell surfaces interdigitating with those on the adjacent cells. This case report helps to understand the diversity of the background findings in beagles used in toxicity studies

    Long-term efficacy of intravenously administered immunoglobulin in a case of polymyositis with limited application of steroid therapy.

    A 72-year-old man who had been diagnosed with polymyositis (PM) was admitted to our hospital for pneumonia with exacerbation of muscle weakness, elevation of muscle enzymes, and positive magnetic resonance imaging findings. The patient had been refractory to cyclosporine A or azathioprine and hoped to avoid administration of high-dose steroids; IV immunoglobulin (IVIG) was therefore administered after improvement of the pneumonia. Two weeks after the IVIG therapy, muscle test scores, activities of daily living, and muscle enzymes were drastically improved. Twenty months after IVIG, no relapse of PM was observed

    Utility of Combined Use of Transabdominal Ultrasonography and Fecal Immunochemical Test Examinations in Ulcerative Colitis

    This study examined the utility of the combined use of transabdominal ultrasonography (TUS) and fecal immunochemical testing (FIT) to detect mucosal inflammation, vis-a-vis the Mayo endoscopic subscore (MES), in ulcerative colitis (UC). Sixty-three UC patients who underwent TUS and FIT were retrospectively enrolled. For TUS, the colon was divided into five segments, and the bowel wall thickness was measured and evaluated. The accuracy of FIT (> 100 ng/ml) in detecting mucosal inflammation (MES>0) was 0.93, whereas that of TUS (BWT>2 mm) in each segment was 0.84-0.97. The combined use of TUS and FIT may be helpful in noninvasive treatment strategies

    CO oxidation on perovskite-type LaCoO3 synthesized using ethylene glycol and citric acid

    In order to synthesize perovskite-type LaCoO3 with good surface crystallinity, the gel prepared by adding both ethylene glycol (EG) and citric acid (CA) to the aqueous solution of La(NO3)3 center dot 6H(2)O and Co(NO3)(2) center dot 6H(2)O was fired at 600 degrees C in air for 3 h. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation indicated that the particles of LaCoO3 tended to have a uniform shape at EG/CA = 4. Although, the specific surface area of LaCoO3 synthesized using both EG and CA was slightly smaller than that of LaCoO3 synthesized using only CA, the catalytic activity of CO oxidation became higher by adding EG
