    Electrical spin injection in p-type Si using Fe/MgO contacts

    We report the successful electrical creation of spin polarization in p-type Si at room temperature by using an epitaxial MgO(001) tunnel barrier and Fe(001) electrode. Reflection high-energy electron diffraction observations revealed that epitaxial Fe/MgO(001) tunnel contacts can be grown on a (2 x 1) reconstructed Si surface whereas tunnel contacts grown on the (1 x 1) Si surface were polycrystalline. Transmission electron microscopy images showed a more flat interface for the epitaxial Fe/MgO/Si compared to that of the polycrystalline structure. For the Fe/MgO/p-Si devices, the Hanle and inverted Hanle effects were clearly observed at 300 K by using a three-terminal configuration, proving that spin polarization can be induced in the Si at room temperature. Effective spin lifetimes deduced from the width of the Hanle curve were 95 +/- 6 ps and 143 +/- 10 ps for the samples with polycrystalline and epitaxial MgO tunnel contacts, respectively. The observed difference can be qualitatively explained by the local magnetic field induced by the larger roughness of the interface of the polycrystalline sample. The sample with epitaxial Fe/MgO tunnel contact showed higher magnitude of the spin accumulation with a nearly symmetric behavior with respect to the bias polarity whereas that of the polycrystalline MgO sample exhibited a quite asymmetric evolution. This might be attributed to the higher degree of spin polarization of the epitaxial Fe/MgO(001) tunnel contact, which acts as a spin filter.     X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and photoemission study of the diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor Zn1x_{1-x}Crx_xTe

    We have performed x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and valence-band photoemission studies of the diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor Zn1x_{1-x}Crx_xTe. XMCD signals due to ferromagnetism were observed at the Cr 2p absorption edge. Comparison with atomic multiplet calculations suggests that the magnetically active component of the Cr ion was divalent under the tetrahedral crystal field with tetragonal distortion along the crystalline a-, b-, and c-axes. In the valence-band spectra, spectral weight near the Fermi level was strongly suppressed, suggesting the importance of Jahn-Teller effect and the strong Coulomb interaction between the Cr 3d electrons

    Fertility knowledge and the timing of first childbearing: a cross-sectional study in Japan

    Although fertility educational initiatives have increased in developed countries to prevent infertility and to broaden fertility choices, the relationship between knowledge and behaviour is still poorly understood. In order to investigate the association between fertility knowledge and timing of childbearing, we investigated male and female participants between 35 and 44 years of age who had children (n = 640) from an online survey conducted in Japan in 2013. The age at which participants actually gave birth to or fathered their first child was compared between those who were aware for at least a decade of age-related decline in female fertility (hereinafter, those with past fertility knowledge) and those without. Age at first birth was significantly younger and more narrowly distributed among women with past fertility knowledge than among those without: 28.2 ± 3.4 vs. 29.8 ± 4.6 (mean ± SD). A multivariate linear regression analysis showed that women with past fertility knowledge gave birth to their first child 2.34 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.09–3.59] years earlier compared to those without such knowledge. No significant relation existed among men. Being informed in young adulthood about the facts of fertility might be related to starting a family at an earlier age, although further longitudinal evaluation will be necessary

    A Series Expansion Study for Large Negative Quantum Renormalization of Magnon Spectra in the S=1/2S=1/2 Kagome-Lattice Heisenberg Antiferromagnet Cs2_{2}Cu3_{3}SnF12_{12}

    The series expansion method is used to study magnon spectra of the kagome system with nearest-neighbor exchange interaction JJ and out-of-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction DD^{\parallel}, which is a minimal model for Cs2_{2}Cu3_{3}SnF12_{12}. Compared to the magnon spectra by the linear spin wave (LSW) theory, we find that dispersions at high energy part suffer downward deformation, which is similar to the triangle lattice case, in addition to the reduction of the energy scale of about 40\% as pointed out in a neutron-scattering study by Ono {\it et al.} Using a reliable estimation J=20.7J=20.7 meV in a previous study on the magnetic susceptibility of Cs2_{2}Cu3_{3}SnF12_{12}, we use DD^{\parallel} as the fitting parameter to reproduce the experimental magnon spectra and obtain D=0.12JD^{\parallel}=0.12J. We also report that a roton-like minimum occurs at the M point and a maximum at points somewhat away from the Γ\Gamma point. Compression of the LSW magnon band is commonly seen in the kagome and triangular-lattice systems, which may be viewed as being pushed from above by the spinon continuum

    Confectionery intake and serum phosphorus

    Hyperphosphatemia is associated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Recently, it has been shown that high serum phosphorus levels are associated with increased cardiovascular events in healthy subjects, but the dietary factors determining serum phosphorus level have not been fully investigated. The study investigated the influence of habitual dietary factors on serum phosphorus levels in healthy young participants. This cross-sectional study conducted fasting blood sampling in 109 healthy young people and used a brief-type self-administered diet history questionnaire to evaluate the subject's habitual meals. Since the bioavailability of dietary phosphorus depends on the food sources, habitual phosphorus intakes from different food groups and intake frequency (times/month) of processed foods were calculated. The mean serum phosphorus level was 3.9±0.5 mg/dl ; 10.1% of the subjects had serum phosphorus levels that exceeded the reference levels of ≤4.5 mg/dl. Total phosphorus intake and phosphorus intake from animal-based food did not differ between serum phosphorus quartiles. Higher intake of confectionery was associated with increased serum phosphorus levels. This study showed that frequent consumption of confectionery was associated with elevated serum phosphorus levels. Additional studies are needed to determine whether this is a causal relationship

    Spin Accumulation in Nondegenerate and Heavily Doped p-Type Germanium

    Spin accumulation induced in p-type germanium from Fe/MgO tunnel contacts is studied as a function of hole concentration p (10^16 - 10^19 cm-3). For all p, the contacts are free of rectification and Schottky barrier, guaranteeing spin injection into the Ge and preventing spin accumulation enhancement by two-step tunneling via interface states. The observed spin accumulation is smallest for nondegenerate doping (p ~ 10^16 cm-3) and increases for heavily doped Ge. This trend is opposite to what is expected from spin injection and diffusion theory. For heavily doped Ge, the observed spin accumulation is orders of magnitude larger than predicted.Comment: To appear in Appl. Phys. Expres

    Assisted reproductive technology in Japan : A summary report for 2016 by the Ethics Committee of the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology

    Purpose: The Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology started an online cycle-based assisted reproductive technology (ART) registry system in 2007. This report presents the characteristics and treatment outcomes of ART registered for the cycles practiced during 2016. Methods: Cycle‐specific information for all ART cycles implemented in participating ART facilities were collected. A descriptive analysis was conducted for the registry database of 2016. Results: In total, 447 790 treatment cycles and 54 110 neonates (one in 18.1 neonates born in Japan) were reported in 2016. The mean patients’ age was 38.1 years (SD = 4.5). Among the egg retrieval cycles, 104 575 of 251 399 (41.6%) were freeze-all cycles without fresh embryo transfers (ET), while fresh ET was performed in 64 497 cycles (58.4%). A total of 187 132 frozen‐thawed ET cycles were reported, resulting in 62 432 pregnancies and 44 484 neonates born. Single ET was selected for 81.0% of fresh transfers and 82.7% of frozen cycles, resulting in singleton pregnancy/live birth rates of 97.0%/96.4% and 96.7%/96.4%, respectively. Conclusion: The total ART cycles and subsequent live births continued to increase in 2016. Single ET was performed more than 80%, and ET has shifted from using fresh embryos to frozen ones

    Did My Hand Move in a Mirror? Body Ownership Induced by the Mirror Hand Illusion

    Although the illusion that the mirror image of a hand or limb could be recognized as a part of one’s body behind the mirror, the effect of adding tactile stimulation to this illusion remains unknown. We, therefore, examined how the timing of tactile stimulation affects the induction of body ownership on the mirror image. Twenty-one healthy, right-handed participants (mean age = 23.0 ± 1.0 years, no medical history of neurological and/or psychiatric disorders) were enrolled and a crossover design was adopted in this study. Participants’ right and left hands were placed on the front and back sides of the mirror, respectively, then they were asked to keep looking at their right hand in the mirror. All participants experienced two experiments; one was with tactile stimulation that was synchronized with the movement of a mirror image (synchronous condition), and the other one was with tactile stimulation that was not synchronized (asynchronous condition). The qualitative degree of body ownership for the mirrored hand was evaluated by a questionnaire. Proprioceptive drift (PD), an illusory shift of the felt position of the real hand toward the mirrored hand was used for quantitative evaluation of body ownership and measured at “baseline,” “immediately after stimulation,” “2 min after stimulation,” and “4 min after stimulation.” The results of the questionnaire revealed that some items of body ownership rating were higher in the synchronous condition than in the asynchronous condition (p < 0.05). We found that PD occurred from immediately after to 4 min after stimulation in both conditions (p < 0.01) and there was no difference in the results between the conditions. From the dissociation of these results, we interpreted that body ownership could be elicited by different mechanisms depending on the task demand. Our results may contribute to the understanding of the multisensory integration mechanism of visual and tactile stimulation during mirror illusion induction

    Identifying the specific functional regulator of integrin family molecules in cancer cells is critical because they are directly involved in tumor invasion and metastasis. Here we report high expression of PLOD2 in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) and its critical role as a stabilizer of integrin β1, enabling integrin β1 to initiate tumor invasion/metastasis. Integrin β1 stabilized by PLOD2-mediated hydroxylation was recruited to the plasma membrane, its functional site, and accelerated tumor cell motility, leading to tumor metastasis in vivo, whereas loss of PLOD2 expression abrogated it. In accordance with molecular analysis, examination of oropharyngeal SCC tissues from patients corroborated PLOD2 expression associated with integrin β1 at the invasive front of tumor nests. PLOD2 is thus implicated as the key regulator of integrin β1 that prominently regulates tumor invasion and metastasis, and it provides important clues engendering novel therapeutics for these intractable cancers
