    An assessment of airfoil design by numerical optimization

    A practical procedure for optimum design of aerodynamic shapes is demonstrated. The proposed procedure uses an optimization program based on the method of feasible directions coupled with an analysis program that uses a relaxation solution of the inviscid, transonic, small-disturbance equations. Results are presented for low-drag, nonlifting transonic airfoils. Extension of the method to lifting airfoils, other speed regimes, and to three dimensions if feasible

    Improved Mean-Field Scheme for the Hubbard Model

    Ground state energies and on-site density-density correlations are calculated for the 1-D Hubbard model using a linear combination of the Hubbard projection operators. The mean-field coefficients in the resulting linearized Equations of Motion (EOM) depend on both one-particle static expectation values as well as static two-particle correlations. To test the model, the one particle expectation values are determined self-consistently while using Lanczos determined values for the two particle correlation terms. Ground state energies and on-site density-density correlations are then compared as a function of UU to the corresponding Lanczos values on a 12 site Hubbard chain for 1/2 and 5/12 fillings. To further demonstrate the validity of the technique, the static correlation functions are also calculated using a similar EOM approach, which ignores the effective vertex corrections for this problem, and compares those results as well for a 1/2 filled chain.     A 43-Gbps Lithium Niobate Modulator Driver Module

    This paper describes the realization of a 43-Gbps Lithium Niobate modulator driver module. The NRZ driver module utilizes four stages of GaAs p-HEMT MMIC amplifiers integrated with an output level detector and feedback loop to provide thermal stability and external control of the output swing. The bias and loop control circuitry are contained in the housing on a PC board external to the sealed MIC section. The integrated module (50.8 x 73.4 x 9.5 mm 3) provides 6.0 Vp-p controllable single-ended output voltage while dissipating only 4 watt

    Circumnuclear Gas in Seyfert 1 Galaxies: Morphology, Kinematics, and Direct Measurement of Black Hole Masses

    (Abridged) The two-dimensional distribution and kinematics of the molecular, ionized, and highly ionized gas in the nuclear regions of Seyfert 1 galaxies have been measured using high spatial resolution (~0''.09) near-infrared spectroscopy from NIRSPEC with adaptive optics on the Keck telescope. Molecular hydrogen, H2, is detected in all nine Seyfert 1 galaxies and, in the majority of galaxies, has a spatially resolved flux distribution. In contrast, the narrow component of the BrG emission has a distribution consistent with that of the K-band continuum. In general, the kinematics of H2 are consistent with thin disk rotation, with a velocity gradient of over 100 km/s measured across the central 0''.5 in three galaxies, and across the central 1''.5 in two galaxies. The kinematics of BrG are in agreement with the H2 rotation, except in all four cases the central 0''.5 is either blue- or redshifted by more than 75 km/s. The highly ionized gas, measured with the [Ca VIII] and [Si VII] coronal lines, is spatially and kinematically consistent with BrG in the central 0''.5. Dynamical models have been fitted to the two-dimensional H2 kinematics, taking into account the stellar mass distribution, the emission line flux distribution, and the point spread function. For NGC 3227 the modeling indicates a black hole mass of Mbh = 2.0{+1.0/-0.4} x 10^7 Msun, and for NGC 4151 Mbh = 3.0{+0.75/-2.2} x 10^7 Msun. In NGC 7469 the best fit model gives Mbh < 5.0 x 10^7 Msun. In all three galaxies, modeling suggests a near face-on disk inclination angle, which is consistent with the unification theory of active galaxies. The direct black hole mass estimates verify that masses determined from the technique of reverberation mapping are accurate to within a factor of three with no additional systematic errors.Comment: 43 pages, including 47 figures; Accepted for publication in ApJ.     Over 600 fields in the corn, soybean and wheat growing regions of the Argentine pampa were categorized by crop or cover type and ancillary data including crop calendars, historical crop production statistics and certain cropping practices were also gathered. A summary of the field work undertaken is included along with a country overview, a chronology of field trip planning and field work events, and the field work inventory of selected sample segments. LANDSAT images were annotated and used as the field work base and several hundred ground and aerial photographs were taken. These items along with segment descriptions are presented. Meetings were held with officials of the State Secretariat of Agriculture (SEAG) and the National Commission on Space Investigations (CNIE), and their support to the program are described

The panels, covering the equivalent of nine football fields, made public the grief of thousands of individuals and families whose loved ones have died of AlDS.     A z=0.9 supercluster of X-ray luminous, optically-selected, massive galaxy clusters

    We report the discovery of a compact supercluster structure at z=0.9. The structure comprises three optically-selected clusters, all of which are detected in X-rays and spectroscopically confirmed to lie at the same redshift. The Chandra X-ray temperatures imply individual masses of ~5x10^14 Msun. The X-ray masses are consistent with those inferred from optical--X-ray scaling relations established at lower redshift. A strongly-lensed z~4 Lyman break galaxy behind one of the clusters allows a strong-lensing mass to be estimated for this cluster, which is in good agreement with the X-ray measurement. Optical spectroscopy of this cluster gives a dynamical mass in good agreement with the other independent mass estimates. The three components of the RCS2319+00 supercluster are separated from their nearest neighbor by a mere <3 Mpc in the plane of the sky and likely <10 Mpc along the line-of-sight, and we interpret this structure as the high-redshift antecedent of massive (~10^15 Msun) z~0.5 clusters such as MS0451.5-0305.Comment: ApJ Letters accepted. 5 pages in emulateapj, 3 figure

    Theorems on gravitational time delay and related issues

    Two theorems related to gravitational time delay are proven. Both theorems apply to spacetimes satisfying the null energy condition and the null generic condition. The first theorem states that if the spacetime is null geodesically complete, then given any compact set KK, there exists another compact set K′K' such that for any p,q∉K′p,q \not\in K', if there exists a ``fastest null geodesic'', γ\gamma, between pp and qq, then γ\gamma cannot enter KK. As an application of this theorem, we show that if, in addition, the spacetime is globally hyperbolic with a compact Cauchy surface, then any observer at sufficiently late times cannot have a particle horizon. The second theorem states that if a timelike conformal boundary can be attached to the spacetime such that the spacetime with boundary satisfies strong causality as well as a compactness condition, then any ``fastest null geodesic'' connecting two points on the boundary must lie entirely within the boundary. It follows from this theorem that generic perturbations of anti-de Sitter spacetime always produce a time delay relative to anti-de Sitter spacetime itself.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figure.
