Evolutionary responses of marine invertebrates to insular isolation in Galapagos
I examine the natural barriers to distribution and colonization that have shaped the Galapagos marine invertebrate biota. While diversity is high for some groups, such as hydroids and bryozoans, it is low for many others. Porcelain crabs and molluscs are examples with reduced or unbalanced representation in Galapagos, resulting from their dependency on dispersal of relatively short-lived planktonic larvae by ocean currents and on habitat limitations in Galapagos. Because Galapagos shorelines are predominantly rocky, without the wide expanses of silt typical of much of the Ecuadorian mainland that are favored by infaunal bivalves, gastropod diversity in Galapagos far exceeds that of bivalves. Nearly all hermatypic corals in Galapagos are members of the Panamic province; none is endemic to Galapagos. This suggests that colonization occurred by larval dispersal from there. The ahermatypic (azooxanthellate) coral fauna of Galapagos, with 43 species, is richer and more diverse than the hermatypic corals, with 29% of the shallow-water ahermatypes endemic and the remainder with Panamic, Indo-Pacific, and cosmopolitan affinities. The 73 verified species of Galapagos shallow-water echinoderms are dominated by Panamic species, with additional affinities to the Indo-Pacific and the California province; 8% are cosmopolitan and 8% endemic. With species richness roughly equivalent to that of Pacific Colombia, Galapagos echinoderm representation is not depauperate, but is sufficiently distinctive to characterize it as an isolated, insular biota. Hydroids and bryozoans, two groups with high diversity in Galapagos, accomplish long-distance transport mainly as adults on floating debris and hulls of ships, rather than by the free-swimming reproductive stage. Endemism among marine invertebrates averages 18.3 %, but varies widely among major taxa, from 0% for reef corals to 71% for gorgonians. Unlike the Galapagos terrestrial biota, in which endemic genera are common, the absence of endemic genera among marine invertebrates may be attributed to low isolation arising from greater dispersal and gene flow in the marine environment

STRUCTURAL EVOLUTION OF AN INTRACRATONIC RIFT SYSTEM; MISSISSIPPI VALLEY GRABEN, ROUGH CREEK GRABEN, AND ROME TROUGH OF KENTUCKY, USA
As indicated by drilling and geophysical data, the Mississippi Valley Graben, the Rough Creek Graben, together with the Rome Trough of eastern Kentucky and West Virginia, are fault-bounded graben structures filled with as much as 27,000 feet of Early to Middle Cambrian sediments. Detailed regional mapping of Cambrian and younger strata within and surrounding these structures indicates that they formed contemporaneously. The proximity of these structures suggests they developed within the same regional stress fields and tectonic environments. These three structures are mechanically and kinematically connected, and formed part of a single continent-scale rift system produced during the breakup of Rodinia and the separation of Laurentia from Amazonia.
Data including stratigraphic tops from 1,764 wells, interpretations of 106 seismic profiles, aeromagnetic and gravity survey analysis, and mapped surface geology and structures were used within this project. Seven stratigraphic packages resolvable in both geophysical well logs and reflection seismic profiles were mapped in the subsurface across parts of Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, and Tennessee. These stratigraphic units were then analyzed through structure maps, isopachous maps, and across 12 regional well-based cross sections.
Detailed analysis of thickness patterns of seven major stratigraphic packages was used to identify the locations and timing of major fault movements within the study area. The regional patterns of fault movements through time were used to investigate how the structures evolved in response to the tectonic episodes in southeastern Laurentia during the Cambrian through Devonian Periods.
Active rifting of the Precambrian crystalline bedrock began by the Early Cambrian, and resulted in a thick deposit of Reelfoot Arkose and Eau Claire Formation within the Mississippi Valley and Rough Creek Grabens, and the Rome Formation and Conasauga Group within the Rome Trough. Major tectonic extension ended by the Late Cambrian, prior to the deposition of the Knox Supergroup. Counter-clockwise rotation of the regional sigma-1 stress field between the Middle Ordovician and Early Mississippian (Taconic through Acadian Orogenies) resulted in the reactivation of varying sets of preexisting faults through time. The locations, orientations, and timing of these active faults relate to the deep architecture of the rift system
Foreword
Our law school at the University of San Diego is, by almost any standard, a small one. Over two-thirds of our students attend the part-time division; the day school numbers less than sixty. Only one hundred men and one woman have earned degrees since the school was founded, originally as a night school, some ten years ago. Our school is not endowed; our graduates are just beginning to make their presence truly known in local legal circles. The first gift from alumni to the school-in the form of a cash prize for outstanding work by a student-was received on December 10, 1963
Preliminary survey of zooxanthellate zoanthids (Cnidaria : Hexacorallia) of the Galapagos, and associated symbiotic dinoflagellates (Symbiodinium spp.)
Despite their presence in almost all marine ecosystems, the zoanthids (Cnidaria: Hexacorallia: Zoantharia) are poorly studied, in large part due to a lack of useful morphological identification characters. Recent research combining morphology with DNA markers has begun to shed new light on diversity and distribution of the order Zoantharia. Here, preliminary findings on the diversity and distribution of zooxanthellate zoanthid species from the genera Zoanthus and Palythoa are presented, documenting these genera in the Galapagos for the first time. A brief description of the species found is provided. Zoanthus and Palythoa appear to be limited in the Galapagos to rocky shores in warm shallow sublittoral and infralittoral waters (minimum temperature >18°C), isolated from the colder water that dominates much of the archipelago. Preliminary results from the internal transcribed spacer region of ribosomal DNA sequences of symbiotic dinoflagellates suggest that both Zoanthus and Palythoa spp. in the Galapagos possess only Symbiodinium clade C. Brief descriptions of the zooxanthellate zoanthid species found in the Galapagos are provided
Systematic Review of Technology-Based Interventions Targeting Chronically Ill Adults and Their Caregivers
The purpose of this systematic review is to synthesize the study design features as well as the attributes and outcomes of technology-based health interventions targeting chronically ill adults and their family caregivers. Twenty papers representing 19 studies met the inclusion criteria. Various theoretical foundations or approaches guided the interventions in 11 studies. Interventions either aimed to support patient self-management and improve patient outcomes or enhance shared illness management and improve patient and caregiver outcomes. The interventions included educational, behavioral, and support components and were delivered using various technologies ranging from text messaging to using the Internet. Overall, patients and caregivers expressed improvements in self-management outcomes (or support) and quality of life. Interventions with a dyadic focus reported on interpersonal outcomes, with improvements noted mostly in patients. This review captures an emerging area of science, and findings should be interpreted in light of the methodological limitations of the included studies
Negative Marital Interaction, Purpose in Life, and Depressive Symptoms Among Middle-Aged and Older Couples: Evidence From the Health and Retirement Study
Objective: Negative marital interaction and purpose in life have been associated with depressive symptoms. Yet, these associations have not been fully explored in a dyadic context. This study examines the actor (intra-individual) and partner (cross-spousal) effects of negative marital interaction on depressive symptoms in couples and the potential mediating role of purpose in life. Methods: Data came from 1186 heterosexual married couples who participated in the 2016 (T1) and 2018 (T2) waves of the Health and Retirement Study and completed the psychosocial questionnaire in 2016. Structural equation modeling was used to estimate the direct and indirect associations among T1 negative marital interaction, T1 purpose in life, and T2 depressive symptoms at the actor and partner levels. Models controlled for age, race, educational level, self-rated health, and length of marriage. Results: At the actor level, a greater negative marital interaction was associated with significantly lower levels of purpose in life for husbands and wives. Negative marital interaction was also associated with depressive symptoms for wives. Purpose in life mediated the relationship between negative marital interaction and depressive symptoms. At the partner level, wives’ negative marital interaction was negatively associated with husbands’ purpose in life, independent of husbands’ own effects. Conclusion: The findings support the dominant marital discord model of depression and highlight gender differences in the cross-spousal effects of negative marital interaction on purpose in life. Positive psychology interventions can be beneficial to promote purpose in life and subsequently improve mental health outcomes among couples
Octocorals in the Galapagos Islands
The Galapagos octocorals were almost unknown until recent years. Of the three orders within the subclass Octocorallia (Anthozoa, Cnidaria), the Pennatulacea (sea pens) and Alcyonacea (soft corals and gorgonians) occur in the Galapagos. Recent collections and research bring the total known octocorallian fauna to three sea pens (Virgularia galapagensis, Ptilosarcus undulatus and Cavernulina darwini) and 15 gorgonians. Of the 13 gorgonians that we have collected, several are new species. Pacifigorgia is widely distributed in the archipelago, with four named species (P. dampieri, P. symbiotica, P. rubripunctata, and P. darwinii), three of them recently described, and two others yet to be described. The genus Muricea contains three widely distributed undescribed species, one of which appears in three chromotypes, and one deepwater species that has not been collected recently. Two species of Heterogorgia occur in the central archipelago, H. verrucosa and the recently described and widely distributed H. hickmani. The remaining gorgonians are Eugorgia daniana, Leptogorgia alba and Adelogorgia telones
