Evaluation of SHRP Work Zone Safety Devices

    Get PDF
The objective of this study was to use and evaluate various SHRP work zone devices. Experience with the use of these devices was obtained through trial use by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and various city, county, and private agencies. The devices included in the study included: Flashing Stop/Slow Paddle All-Terrain Sign and Stand Portable Rumble Strip Opposing Traffic Lane Divider Intrusion Alarm The experience with the flashing stop/slow paddles was very positive indicating the potential for expanded use in the future. Six different models of flashing paddles were evaluated with some having better results than others. While the all-terrain stand and sign was effective, its future use is limited by both its cost and difficulty to use. The use of the portable rumble strip will be limited by its difficulty to use, related to both its weight and inability to stay in place on high speed roads. The opposing traffic lane divider shows potential for use as a supplement to the standard tubular marker but must be used at locations where it is not routinely hit by traffic. Lane dividers from three manufacturers were tested with varying degrees of success. The intrusion alarm has the potential for use on major projects with its cost limiting its use. The continuing modifications made to the intrusion alarms during the study period made it difficult to obtain a complete evaluation or recommendation for a specific unit. Intrusion alarms from five manufacturers were evaluated

Novel twisted blades with an air foil for use with air conditioner condensers and heat pumps that provide improved airflow efficiency to minimize operating power requirements having an overall diameter across the blades being approximately 19 inches, and approximately 27.6 inches. The blades (AC-A) can run at approximately 840 rpm to produce approximately 2200 cfm of air flow using approximately 110 Watts of power from an 8-pole motor. Using an OEM 6-pole 1/8 hp motor produced approximately 2800 cfm with approximately 144 Watts of power while running the blades at approximately 1100 rpm. Power savings were 25% (50 W) over the conventional configuration. A second version of the fan (AC-B) with some refinements to the flow geometry produced a similar air flow while using only 131 W of power at 1100 rpm. Power savings were 32% (62 W) over the conventional configuration. Embodiments can include two, three, four and five blades equally spaced apart from one another about hubs. Additionally

Gamma-Interferon-Induced Nitric-Oxide Production Reduces Chlamydia-Trachomatis Infectivity in McCoy Cells

    Get PDF
McCoy cells, murine-derived cells commonly used for propagation of chlamydiae, were found to be efficient producers of nitric oxide (NO) when primed with murine gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) and then exposed to the second signals provided by Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide, human interleukin-1 alpha, murine tumor necrosis factor alpha, or Chlamydia trachomatis type H. Murine recombinant IFN-gamma over a range of 0 to 50 U/ml inhibited infectivity of C. trachomatis type H in a dose-dependent fashion in McCoy cells while simultaneously inducing NO production. Quantitation of infectious chlamydia progeny remaining in McCoy cells 48 or 72 h postinfection revealed that IFN-gamma-primed McCoy cells reduced chlamydial inclusion-forming units (expressed as units per milliliter) by 4 log10 units at higher IFN-gamma concentrations (50 U/ml) compared with control values. The magnitude of this antichlamydial effect was directly related to increased synthesis of NO, the production of which was IFN-gamma dose dependent. The antichlamydial effects of IFN-gamma were blocked in a dose-dependent manner by the addition of N-guanidino-monomethyl L-arginine (MLA), an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthesis. These results suggest that although IFN-gamma priming of McCoy cells is required for antichlamydial activity, nitric oxide is a necessary effector molecule involved in the mechanism(s) of IFN-gamma-induced inhibition of chlamydial proliferation in this murine cell line. The ability to block the potent antichlamydial effects of IFN-gamma by inhibition of a specific enzyme, nitric oxide synthase, may give insights into mechanisms by which IFN-gamma and perhaps other cytokines are able to control proliferation of chlamydiae and other intracellular pathogens
