A Marine Growth Detection System for Underwater Gliders

    Get PDF
Marine growth has been observed to cause a drop in the horizontal and vertical velocities of underwater gliders, thus making them unresponsive and needing immediate recovery. Currently, no strategies exist to correctly identify the onset of marine growth for gliders and only limited data sets of biofouled hulls exist. Here, a field test has been conducted to first investigate the impact of marine growth on the dynamics and power consumption of underwater gliders and then design an anomaly detection system for high levels of biofouling. A Slocum glider was deployed first for eight days with drag stimulators to imitate severe biofouling; then, the vehicle was redeployed with no additions to the hull for further 20 days. The mimicked biofouling caused a speed reduction due to a significant increase in drag. Additionally, the lower speed causes the steady-state flight stage to last longer and the rudder to become less responsive; hence, marine growth results in a shortening of deployment duration through an increase in power consumption. As actual biofouling due to p. pollicipes occurred during the second deployment, it is possible to develop and test a system that successfully detects and identifies high levels of marine growth on the glider, blending model- and data-based solutions using steady-state flight data. The system will greatly help pilots replan missions to safely recover the vehicle if significant biofouling is detected

Interfacial Self-Assembly to Spatially Organize Graphene Oxide Into Hierarchical and Bioactive Structures

Multicomponent self-assembly holds great promise for the generation of complex and functional biomaterials with hierarchical microstructure. Here, we describe the use of supramolecular co-assembly between an elastin-like recombinamer (ELR5) and a peptide amphiphile (PA) to organise graphene oxide (GO) flakes into bioactive structures across multiple scales. The process takes advantage of a reaction – diffusion mechanism to enable the incorporation and spatial organization of GO within multiple ELR5/PA layers. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and ImageJ software were used to demonstrate the hierarchical organisation of GO flakes within the ELR5/PA layers and the distribution profiles of GO throughout the ELR5/PA membranes. Furthermore, atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed improved Young’s moduli of the ELR5/PA/GOmembranes compared to the ELR5/PA membranes. Lastly, we investigated biocompatibility of the ELR5/PA/GO membrane via various cell culture methods

    Resolving the M2-brane

We construct deformed, T^2 wrapped, rotating M2-branes on a resolved cone over Q^{1,1,1} and Q^{1,1,1}/Z_2, as well as on a product of two Eguchi-Hanson instantons. All worldvolume directions of these supersymmetric and regular solutions are fibred over the transverse space. These constitute gravity duals of D=3, N=2 gauge theories. In particular, the deformed M2-brane on a resolved cone over Q^{1,1,1} and the S^1 wrapped M2-brane on a resolved cone over Q^{1,1,1}/Z_2 provide explicit realizations of holographic renormalization group flows in M-theory for which both conformal and Lorentz symmetries are broken in the IR region and restored in the UV limit. These solutions can be dualized to supersymmetric type IIB pp-waves, which are rendered non-singular either by additional flux or a twisted time-like direction.Comment: Latex, 23 pages, references adde

Epidemiological implications of the genetic diversification of dengue virus (DENV) serotypes and genotypes in Mexico

    Get PDF
Variation and clade shifts in dengue virus (DENV) genotypes are responsible for numerous dengue fever outbreaks throughout Latin America in the past decade. Molecular analyses of dengue serotypes have revealed extensive genetic diversification and the emergence of new genotypes in Brazil (DENV-4 genotype I) and elsewhere in tropical and subtropical America. The goal of the present study is to assess the extent to which the adventitious introduction of DENV genotypes and their increasing genetic diversity affects dengue epidemiology in Mexico. A nuanced sequence inspection and phylogenetic analysis of the C-prM nucleotide region of DENV was performed for specimens collecting in 2009 from the Veracruz State, Mexico. Findings were contrasted with specimens collected in adjacent years and analysed based on the epidemiological patterns reported between 1990 and 2019. Additionally, the identification process of various DENV genotypes was assessed, including: (1) DENV-1, genotype V, (2) the DENV-2 Asian/American and Asian II genotypes (3) DENV-3, genotype III, and (4) DENV-4, genotype I. This resulted in the discovery of a distinct genetic cladistic pattern for serotype DENV-2. Lastly, study findings suggest that a correlation exists between the emergence of novel genotypes and genetic diversification, with the increasing incidence of DENV infections in Mexico in 2009

Analysing the elasticity difference tensor of general relativity

    Get PDF
The elasticity difference tensor, used in [1] to describe elasticity properties of a continuous medium filling a space-time, is here analysed from the point of view of the space-time connection. Principal directions associated with this tensor are compared with eigendirections of the material metric. Examples concerning spherically symmetric and axially symmetric space-times are then presented.Comment: 17 page

Peri-conception and first trimester diet modifies reproductive development in bulls

    Get PDF
Nutritional perturbation during gestation alters male reproductive development in rodents and sheep. In cattle both the developmental trajectory of the feto–placental unit and its response to dietary perturbations is dissimilar to that of these species. This study examined the effects of dietary protein perturbation during the peri-conception and first trimester periods upon reproductive development in bulls. Nulliparous heifers (n = 360) were individually fed a high- or low-protein diet (HPeri and LPeri) from 60 days before conception. From 24 until 98 days post conception, half of each treatment group changed to the alternative post-conception high- or low-protein diet (HPost and LPost) yielding four treatment groups in a 2 × 2 factorial design. A subset of male fetuses (n = 25) was excised at 98 days post conception and fetal testis development was assessed. Reproductive development of singleton male progeny (n = 40) was assessed until slaughter at 598 days of age, when adult testicular cytology was evaluated. Low peri-conception diet delayed reproductive development: sperm quality was lowered during pubertal development with a concomitant delay in reaching puberty. These effects were subsequent to lower FSH concentrations at 330 and 438 days of age. In the fetus, the low peri-conception diet increased the proportion of seminiferous tubules and decreased blood vessel area in the testis, whereas low first trimester diet increased blood vessel number in the adult testis. We conclude that maternal dietary protein perturbation during conception and early gestation may alter male testis development and delay puberty in bulls

J-PLUS: Detecting and studying extragalactic globular clusters -- the case of NGC 1023

    Get PDF
Extragalactic globular clusters (GCs) are key objects for studying the formation and evolution of galaxies. The arrival of wide-field surveys such as the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) offers new possibilities for the study of GCs. Nevertheless, GCs are not detected a priori by the data reduction pipeline of J-PLUS and, due to its pixel scale, the standard techniques of GCs detection are challenged. To fill this gap, we develop a semi-automatic pipeline to detect GCs in J-PLUS that can also be adapted to similar surveys. As a case study, we use data from the S0 galaxy NGC 1023 and we also study the stellar population content of GC candidates in the galaxy. To detect GCs, our methodology is based on Source Extractor and does not require a previous filtering or modelling of the host galaxy. We study colors and perform spectral energy distribution (SED) analysis on our final GC candidate catalog to obtain stellar population parameters. In NGC 1023, GCFinder identifies 523 GC candidates. We observe evidence of color bimodality in a few broad-band colors but not on narrow-band colors. The SED analysis reveals a clear metallicity bimodality and we observe that narrow-band filters are very useful to constrain metallicities. We also identified a broad age-metallicity relation as well as a wide metallicity distribution that are evidence that NGC 1023 experienced accretion events in the past. It is the first time this kind of study is performed with J-PLUS data. By detecting GC candidates in wide-field images without modeling the light of the galaxy, GCFinder becomes considerably faster, at a marginal loss of centrally-located GC candidates of about 7 percent. As GCFinder is entirely based on Source Extractor, it could be easily incorporated into automated software handling wide-field surveys.Comment: 21 pages, 19 figures, submitted to A&

Atypical Mg-poor Milky Way Field Stars with Globular Cluster Second-generation-like Chemical Patterns

    Get PDF
We report the peculiar chemical abundance patterns of 11 atypical Milky Way (MW) field red giant stars observed by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE). These atypical giants exhibit strong Al and N enhancements accompanied by C and Mg depletions, strikingly similar to those observed in the so-called second-generation (SG) stars of globular clusters (GCs). Remarkably, we find low Mg abundances ([Mg/Fe] < 0.0) together with strong Al and N overabundances in the majority (5/7) of the metal-rich ([Fe/H] gsim −1.0) sample stars, which is at odds with actual observations of SG stars in Galactic GCs of similar metallicities. This chemical pattern is unique and unprecedented among MW stars, posing urgent questions about its origin. These atypical stars could be former SG stars of dissolved GCs formed with intrinsically lower abundances of Mg and enriched Al (subsequently self-polluted by massive AGB stars) or the result of exotic binary systems. We speculate that the stars Mg-deficiency as well as the orbital properties suggest that they could have an extragalactic origin. This discovery should guide future dedicated spectroscopic searches of atypical stellar chemical patterns in our Galaxy, a fundamental step forward to understanding the Galactic formation and evolution
