Exact c-number Representation of Non-Markovian Quantum Dissipation
The reduced dynamics of a quantum system interacting with a linear heat bath
finds an exact representation in terms of a stochastic Schr{\"o}dinger
equation. All memory effects of the reservoir are transformed into noise
correlations and mean-field friction. The classical limit of the resulting
stochastic dynamics is shown to be a generalized Langevin equation, and
conventional quantum state diffusion is recovered in the Born--Markov
approximation. The non-Markovian exact dynamics, valid at arbitrary temperature
and damping strength, is exemplified by an application to the dissipative
two-state system.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. To be published in Phys. Rev. Let
Linking a distance measure of entanglement to its convex roof
An important problem in quantum information theory is the quantification of
entanglement in multipartite mixed quantum states. In this work, a connection
between the geometric measure of entanglement and a distance measure of
entanglement is established. We present a new expression for the geometric
measure of entanglement in terms of the maximal fidelity with a separable
state. A direct application of this result provides a closed expression for the
Bures measure of entanglement of two qubits. We also prove that the number of
elements in an optimal decomposition w.r.t. the geometric measure of
entanglement is bounded from above by the Caratheodory bound, and we find
necessary conditions for the structure of an optimal decomposition.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Gradient Representations and Affine Structures in AE(n)
We study the indefinite Kac-Moody algebras AE(n), arising in the reduction of
Einstein's theory from (n+1) space-time dimensions to one (time) dimension, and
their distinguished maximal regular subalgebras sl(n) and affine A_{n-2}^{(1)}.
The interplay between these two subalgebras is used, for n=3, to determine the
commutation relations of the `gradient generators' within AE(3). The low level
truncation of the geodesic sigma-model over the coset space AE(n)/K(AE(n)) is
shown to map to a suitably truncated version of the SL(n)/SO(n) non-linear
sigma-model resulting from the reduction Einstein's equations in (n+1)
dimensions to (1+1) dimensions. A further truncation to diagonal solutions can
be exploited to define a one-to-one correspondence between such solutions, and
null geodesic trajectories on the infinite-dimensional coset space H/K(H),
where H is the (extended) Heisenberg group, and K(H) its maximal compact
subgroup. We clarify the relation between H and the corresponding subgroup of
the Geroch group.Comment: 43 page
Low-lying optical phonon modes in the filled skutterudite CeRu4Sb12
The phonon dynamics of filled skutterudite CeRu4Sb12 have been studied at
room temperature by inelastic neutron scattering. Optical phonons associated
with a large vibration of Ce atoms are observed at a relatively low energy of E
= 6 meV, and show anticrossing behavior with acoustic phonons. We propose that
the origin of the low lattice thermal conductivity in filled skutterudites can
be attributed to intensive Umklapp scattering originating from low-lying
optical phonons. By an analysis based on a Born-von Karman force model, the
longitudinal force constants of the nearest Ce-Sb and Ce-Ru pairs are estimated
to be 0.025 mdyn/A, while that of the nearest Ru-Sb pair is estimated to be 1.4
mdyn/A, indicating that the Ce atoms are bound very weakly to the surrounding
rigid RuSb6-octahedron cages.Comment: 4pages, 5 figures, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. (2006) in pres
A thermodynamical fiber bundle model for the fracture of disordered materials
We investigate a disordered version of a thermodynamic fiber bundle model
proposed by Selinger, Wang, Gelbart, and Ben-Shaul a few years ago. For simple
forms of disorder, the model is analytically tractable and displays some new
features. At either constant stress or constant strain, there is a non
monotonic increase of the fraction of broken fibers as a function of
temperature. Moreover, the same values of some macroscopic quantities as stress
and strain may correspond to different microscopic cofigurations, which can be
essential for determining the thermal activation time of the fracture. We argue
that different microscopic states may be characterized by an experimentally
accessible analog of the Edwards-Anderson parameter. At zero temperature, we
recover the behavior of the irreversible fiber bundle model.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figure

High Temperature Conductance of the Single Electron Transistor
The linear conductance of the single electron transistor is determined in the
high temperature limit. Electron tunneling is treated nonperturbatively by
means of a path integral formulation and the conductance is obtained from
Kubo's formula. The theoretical predictions are valid for arbitrary conductance
and found to explain recent experimental data.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Anomalous infrared spectra of hybridized phonons in type-I clathrate BaGaGe
The optical conductivity spectra of the rattling phonons in the clathrate
BaGaGe are investigated in detail by use of the terahertz
time-domain spectroscopy. The experiment has revealed that the lowest-lying
vibrational mode of a Ba(2) ion consists of a sharp Lorentzian peak at
1.2 THz superimposed on a broad tail weighted in the lower frequency regime
around 1.0 THz. With decreasing temperature, an unexpected linewidth broadening
of the phonon peak is observed, together with monotonic softening of the phonon
peak and the enhancement of the tail structure. These observed anomalies are
discussed in terms of impurity scattering effects on the hybridized phonon
system of rattling and acoustic phonons.Comment: Submitted to JPS
