Dentists and dental technicians - a united team or uncomfortable alliance?
The effective practising of dentistry requires that dentists
and dental technicians work hand in hand, having mutual
respect for each other, while maintaining the highest
standards in each of their respective disciplines. From a
limited survey of dentists and dental technicians it seems
that a small portion of our profession have misinterpreted
the concept of âhand in handâ to be one of gross
perverse incentives, corruption, collusion and dishonesty.
This article may come as a shock to some and a revelation
of what is known to be true to others. The issues
discussed have generally been kept as âDental family secretsâ,
however, the authors believe that these practices
need to be uncovered if we want to put an end to this

Intravascular ultrasound predictors of outcome after peripheral balloon angioplasty
Objective:This study investigates the potential role of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) in the outcome in patients undergoing percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) of the superficial femoral artery.Materials:Angiographic and the qualitative and quantitative IVUS data obtained at the narrowest site derived from 39 patients before and after PTA were analysed.Results:Angiographically the diameter of the remaining stenosis seen after PTA was classified as < 50% in 31 patients (success); in eight patients a failure was encountered. Evaluating at 6 months the functional and anatomic results of the PTA in 31 patients, the intervention was a success in 14 patients (Group I) and a failure in 17 patients (Group II). The remaining eight patients defined as angiographic failure following PTA comprised Group III. Neither qualitative nor quantitative IVUS data obtained before PTA could predict outcome. Conversely, after PTA, the extent of dissection was significantly more severe in Groups II and III than in Group I. Similarly, significant differences were found between Groups I and II for mean free lumen area (13.2 vs. 9.7 mm2, respectively) and mean free lumen diameter (4.1 vs. 3.5 mm, respectively). Quantitative data obtained in Group II were similar to those in Group III.Conclusion:This preliminary study demonstrates that following PTA the extent of dissection, free lumen area and diameter seen with IVUS are predictive factors of patency. Future studies with more patients are mandatory to further highlight the sensitivity of these observations

The 2009 edition of the GEISA spectroscopic database
The updated 2009 edition of the spectroscopic database GEISA (Gestionet Etudedes Informations Spectroscopiques Atmospheriques ; Management and Study of Atmospheric Spectroscopic Information) is described in this paper. GEISA is a computer-accessible system comprising three independent sub-databases devoted, respectively, to: line parameters, infrared and ultraviolet/visible absorption cross-sections, microphysical and optical properties of atmospheric aerosols. In this edition, 50 molecules are involved in the line parameters sub-database, including 111 isotopologues, for a total of 3,807,997 entries, in the spectral range from 10-6 to 35,877.031cm-1.
GEISA, continuously developed and maintained at LMD (Laboratoirede Meteorologie Dynamique, France) since 1976, is implemented on the IPSL/CNRS(France) ââEtherââ Products and Services Centre WEB site (http://ether.ipsl.jussieu.fr), where all archived spectroscopic data can be handled through general and user friendly associated managements of software facilities. More than 350 researchers are registered for online use of GEISA
Resonance tongues in the quasi-periodic Hill-Schrödinger equation with three frequencies
n this article we investigate numerically the spectrum of some representative
examples of discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with quasi-periodic potential
in terms of a perturbative constant b and the spectral parameter a. Our examples
include the well-known Almost Mathieu model, other trigonometric potentials with a single
quasi-periodic frequency and generalisations with two and three frequencies. We computed
numerically the rotation number and the Lyapunov exponent to detect open and collapsed
gaps, resonance tongues and the measure of the spectrum. We found that the case with one
frequency was significantly different from the case of several frequencies because the latter
has all gaps collapsed for a sufficiently large value of the perturbative constant and thus the
spectrum is a single spectral band with positive Lyapunov exponent. In contrast, in the cases
with one frequency considered, gaps are always dense in the spectrum, although some gaps
may collapse either for a single value of the perturbative constant or for a range of values. In
all cases we found that there is a curve in the (a, b)-plane which separates the regions where
the Lyapunov exponent is zero in the spectrum and where it is positive. Along this curve,
which is b = 2 in the Almost Mathieu case, the measure of the spectrum is zero.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Multiplicity dependence of inclusive J/psi production at midrapidity in pp collisions at root s=13 TeV
Measurements of the inclusive J/psi yield as a function of charged-particle pseudorapidity density dN(ch)/d eta in pp collisions at root s = 13 TeV with ALICE at the LHC are reported. The J/psi meson yield is measured at midrapidity (vertical bar y vertical bar <0.9) in the dielectron channel, for events selected based on the charged-particle multiplicity at midrapidity (vertical bar eta vertical bar <1) and at forward rapidity (-3.7 <eta <-1.7 and 2.8 <eta <5.1); both observables are normalized to their corresponding averages in minimum bias events. The increase of the normalized J/psi yield with normalized dN(ch)/d eta is significantly stronger than linear and dependent on the transverse momentum. The data are compared to theoretical predictions, which describe the observed trends well, albeit not always quantitatively. (C) 2020 European Organization for Nuclear Research. Elliptic flow of charged particles at midrapidity relative to the spectator plane in PbâPb and XeâXe collisions
Measurements of the elliptic flow coefficient relative to the collision plane defined by the spectator neutrons v2{ SP} in collisions of Pb ions at center-of-mass energy per nucleonânucleon pair â 2.76 TeV and Xe ions at â sNN = sNN =5.44 TeV are reported. The results are presented for charged particles produced at midrapidity as a function of centrality and transverse momentum for the 5â70% and 0.2â6 GeV/c ranges, respectively. The ratio between v2{ SP} and the elliptic flow coefficient relative to the participant plane v2{4}, estimated using four-particle correlations, deviates by up to 20% from unity depending on centrality. This observation differs strongly from the magnitude of the corresponding eccentricity ratios predicted by the TRENTo and the elliptic power models of initial state fluctuations that are tuned to describe the participant plane anisotropies. The differences can be interpreted as a decorrelation of the neutron spectator plane and the reaction plane because of fragmentation of the remnants from the colliding nuclei, which points to an incompleteness of current models describing the initial state fluctuations. A significant transverse momentum dependence of the ratio v2{ SP}/v2{4} is observed in all but the most central collisions, which may help to understand whether momentum anisotropies at low and intermediate transverse momentum have a common origin in initial state f luctuations. The ratios of v2{ SP} and v2{4} to the corresponding initial state eccentricities for XeâXe and PbâPb collisions at similar initial entropy density show a difference of (7.0 ±0.9)%with an additional variation of +1.8% when including RHIC data in the TRENTo parameter extraction. These observations provide new experimental constraints for viscous effects in the hydrodynamic modeling of the expanding quarkâgluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC
First measurement of Ωc0 production in pp collisions at s=13 TeV
The inclusive production of the charmâstrange baryon 0 c is measured for the first time via its hadronic â decay into âÏ+ at midrapidity (|y| <0.5) in protonâproton (pp) collisions at the centre-of-mass energy s =13 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The transverse momentum (pT) differential cross section multiplied by the branching ratio is presented in the interval 2 < pT < 12 GeV/c. The pT dependence of the 0 c-baryon production relative to the prompt D0-meson and to the prompt 0 c-baryon production is compared to various models that take different hadronisation mechanisms into consideration. In the measured pT interval, the ratio of the pT-integrated cross sections of 0 c and prompt + c baryons multiplied by the âÏ+ branching ratio is found to be larger by a factor of about 20 with a significance of about 4Ï when compared to e+eâ collisions
