Depression and the incidence of urinary incontinence symptoms among young women: results from a prospective cohort study

Objective To examine the association of depressive symptoms with subsequent urinary incontinence (UI) symptoms among young women. Subjects and methods Data were from a cohort of 5391 young women (born 1973-1978) from the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health. Generalised Estimating Equations (GEEs) were used to link depressive symptoms, and history of doctor diagnosed depression at Survey 2 (S2) in 2000 with the incidence of UI symptoms in subsequent surveys (from S3 in 2003 to S6 in 2012). Results 24% of women reported the incidence of UI over the nine-year study period, while the prevalence rose over time from 6.8% (at S2, aged 22-27 years) to 16.5% (at S6, aged 34-39). From univariable GEE analysis, women with depressive symptoms or a history of depression were more likely to report subsequent UI symptoms. This remained after adjusting for socio-demographic, body mass index, health behaviours and reproductive factors, with depressive symptoms associated with 37% higher odds (odds ratio 1.37, 95% CI 1.16 to 1.61) and history of depression with 42% higher odds (1.42, 1.17 to 1.74) of incidence of UI. Conclusions When woman seek treatment for UI symptoms, health professionals should consider her current or history of depression

Adapting SAM for CDF

The CDF and D0 experiments probe the high-energy frontier and as they do so have accumulated hundreds of Terabytes of data on the way to petabytes of data over the next two years. The experiments have made a commitment to use the developing Grid based on the SAM system to handle these data. The D0 SAM has been extended for use in CDF as common patterns of design emerged to meet the similar requirements of these experiments. Impact of a Faculty Development Course on Promotion at a Health Sciences Center

Background: The objective of this study was to quantify the association between graduation from our annual comprehensive Institutional Faculty Development Course (IFDC) and being promoted from assistant professor to associate professor at our health sciences center. Methods: A retrospective cohort study (October 2008-October 2019) was conducted using publicly-available faculty data. A total of 148 IFDC graduates were compared to 87 non-graduates. Subjects were full-time assistant professors at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso at the start of follow-up. The binary outcome was promotion to associate professor. The outcome was measured annually from 2008 to 2019. Follow-up ended when the faculty member left our institution, was promoted to associate professor, or the study ended, whichever came first. A longitudinal data analysis was performed using generalized estimating equations (GEE) logistic regression with an independent working correlation structure. Adjusted odds ratios (OR) for promotion were calculated from the GEE logistic regression model. Results: The 235 faculty members contributed a total of 1015 records. The average ages (standard deviation) of IFDC graduates and non-graduates were 40.7 (8.6) and 40.3 (7.4) years, respectively. More than half of the IFDC graduates were female (54.1%) and 44.8% of the non-graduates were female. A positive association was detected between IFDC status (graduates vs. non-graduates) and being promoted to associate professor after controlling for time, age, sex, race and Hispanic ethnicity, discipline/specialty, and tenure track status in a GEE logistic regression model: adjusted OR=11.68, 95% confidence interval: 2.72 – 50.21, P=0.001. Conclusions: Completion of the IFDC was strongly correlated with promotion to associate professor at our health sciences center

Influence of the LPM effect and dielectric suppression on particle air showers

An analysis of the influence of the Landau-Migdal-Pomeranchuk (LPM) effect on the development of air showers initiated by astroparticles is presented. The theory of Migdal is studied and compared with other theoretical methods, particularly the Blankenbecler and Drell approach. By means of realistic computer simulations and using algorithms that emulate Migdal's theory, including also the so-called dielectric suppression, we study the behavior of the relevant observables in the case of ultra-high energy primaries. We find that the LPM effect can significantly modify the development of high energy electromagnetic showers in certain cases.Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, 1 table. To appear in Phys. Rev.
