Benchmarking Self-Supervised Learning on Diverse Pathology Datasets
Computational pathology can lead to saving human lives, but models are
annotation hungry and pathology images are notoriously expensive to annotate.
Self-supervised learning has shown to be an effective method for utilizing
unlabeled data, and its application to pathology could greatly benefit its
downstream tasks. Yet, there are no principled studies that compare SSL methods
and discuss how to adapt them for pathology. To address this need, we execute
the largest-scale study of SSL pre-training on pathology image data, to date.
Our study is conducted using 4 representative SSL methods on diverse downstream
tasks. We establish that large-scale domain-aligned pre-training in pathology
consistently out-performs ImageNet pre-training in standard SSL settings such
as linear and fine-tuning evaluations, as well as in low-label regimes.
Moreover, we propose a set of domain-specific techniques that we experimentally
show leads to a performance boost. Lastly, for the first time, we apply SSL to
the challenging task of nuclei instance segmentation and show large and
consistent performance improvements under diverse settings
Association between lower urinary tract symptoms and cigarette smoking or alcohol drinking
Background: Although there have been several studies about the relationship between alcohol or smoking and lower urinary tracts symptoms (LUTS). This study aimed to investigate the association between alcohol or smoking and severity of LUTS in men, as alcohol intake and cigarette smoking is important modifiable lifestyle factors for LUTS. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis has been performed and a total of 86,707 participants in Korean Community Health Survey were included for final analysis. The adjusted odds ratio (OR) or coefficient with 95% confidence interval (CI) estimates were described to show the association between alcohol consumption or cigarette smoking and LUTS. Results: Among the total subjects, 77,398 (89.3%), 7,532 (8.7%), and 1,777 (2.0%) had mild, moderate, and severe symptoms, respectively, according to International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) grade. Those who drank alcohol at least once per month were significantly associated with decreased risk of having the worst IPSS grade (OR: 0.80, 95% CI: 0.68 to 0.93). Those who smoked in the past but currently quitted and those who were daily smokers showed significantly increased risk of having the worst IPSS grade (past smoker, OR: 1.26, 95% CI: 1.14 to 1.39; daily smoker, OR: 1.21, 95% CI: 1.10 to 1.34). For nocturia, daily smoking showed positive effect (OR: 0.79, 95% CI: 0.75 to 0.84) whereas heavy alcohol drinking showed negative effect (OR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.14 to 1.32) Conclusions: Alcohol showed positive effect on LUTS except nocturia whereas cigarette smoking had negative effect on LUTS except nocturia. Daily smoking showed positive effect on nocturia whereas heavy alcohol drinking showed negative effect on nocturia
Easy Diagnosis of Asthma: Computer-Assisted, Symptom-Based Diagnosis
Diagnosis of asthma is often challenging in primary-care physicians due to lack of tools measuring airway obstruction and variability. Symptom-based diagnosis of asthma utilizing objective diagnostic parameters and appropriate software would be useful in clinical practice. A total of 302 adult patients with respiratory symptoms responded to a questionnaire regarding asthma symptoms and provoking factors. Questions were asked and recorded by physicians into a computer program. A definite diagnosis of asthma was made based on a positive response to methacholine bronchial provocation or bronchodilator response (BDR) testing. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the significance of questionnaire responses in terms of discriminating asthmatics. Asthmatic patients showed higher total symptom scores than non-asthmatics (mean 5.93 vs. 4.93; p<0.01). Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified that response to questions concerning the following significantly discriminated asthmatics; wheezing with dyspnea, which is aggravated at night, and by exercise, cold air, and upper respiratory infection. Moreover, the presence of these symptoms was found to agree significantly with definite diagnosis of asthma (by kappa statistics). Receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis revealed that the diagnostic accuracy of symptom-based diagnosis was high with an area under the curve of 0.647±0.033. Using a computer-assisted symptom-based diagnosis program, it is possible to increase the accuracy of diagnosing asthma in general practice, when the facilities required to evaluate airway hyperresponsiveness or BDR are unavailable
Detection Probability of a Low-Mass Planet for Triple Lens Events: Implication of Properties of Binary-Lens Superposition
In view of the assumption that any planetary system is likely to be composed
of more than one planet, and the multiple planet system with a large mass
planet has more chance of detailed follow-up observations, the multiple planet
system may be an efficient way to search for sub-Jovian planets. We compare the
magnification pattern of the triple lens system with that of a best-fitted
binary system composed of a star and a Jovian mass planet, and check the
probability in detecting the low-mass secondary planet whose signature will be
superposed on that of the primary Jovian mass planet. Detection probabilities
of the low-mass planet in the triple lens system are quite similar to the
probability in detecting such a low-mass planet in a binary system with a star
and only a low-mass planet, which shows that the signature of a low-mass planet
can be effectively detected even when it is concurrent with the signature of
the more massive planet, implying that the binary superposition approximation
works over a relatively broad range of planet mass ratio and separations, and
the inaccuracies thereof do not significantly affect the detection probability
of the lower mass secondary planet. Since the signature of the Jovian mass
planet will be larger and lasts longer, thereby warranting more intensive
follow-up observations, the actual detection rate of the low-mass planet in a
triple system with a Jovian mass can be significantly higher than that in a
binary system with a low-mass planet only. We conclude that it may be
worthwhile to develop an efficient algorithm to search for `super-Earth'
planets in the paradigm of the triple lens model for high-magnification
microlensing events.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted by MNRA
Clinical features of children with carbon monoxide intoxication: a single center study
Purpose To investigate the effect of lifestyle changes on patterns of carbon monoxide (CO) exposure and the association between neurologic symptoms and outcomes in Korean children with CO intoxication. Methods We reviewed the medical records of patients (< 18 years) with CO intoxication who visited the emergency department of Pusan National University Hospital between February 2012 and January 2020. We collected clinical findings, including age and sex, transfer from other hospitals, source, time and duration of exposure, manifestations with neurologic symptoms (syncope, seizure, and altered mental status), intensive care unit hospitalization, hospital length of stay, implementation of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and findings of neuroimaging. These variables were compared between children with and without neurologic symptoms. In addition, levels of carboxyhemoglobin and lactate were compared between patients with and without specific manifestations. Results The enrolled 47 patients’ median age was 10 years (interquartile range, 4.5-14.0). The most common source of exposure was fire (46.8%), followed by camping (23.4%). The most common times of exposure were night (44.7%) and winter (44.7%). The patients with neurologic symptoms (14 [29.8%]) showed longer duration of exposure and hospital length of stay (P < 0.001 and P = 0.007, respectively). Of the 14 patients, 2 were hospitalized to the intensive care unit without an in-hospital mortality. A significant association was found between dyspnea and lactate level (P = 0.049), also between syncope or presyncope and carboxy hemoglobin level (P = 0.017). Conclusion CO intoxication in Korean children is most often caused by fire and camping, and at night and in winter. There is a correlation between neurologic symptoms and duration of exposure to CO
