Cholesterol is one of the most mysterious substances found in the living organism. Although universally present in the cells of the body its purpose is still unknown; discoveredby Conradi in 1775 its chemical structure remains indefinite and its analyysis difficult; insoluble in water, still it manages to permeate the whole body and its amount, in bloodand bile, waxes and wanes like the tide with every meal, and with almost every pathological vicissitude undergone by the body.
