Checking-in on Network Functions
When programming network functions, changes within a packet tend to have
consequences---side effects which must be accounted for by network programmers
or administrators via arbitrary logic and an innate understanding of
dependencies. Examples of this include updating checksums when a packet's
contents has been modified or adjusting a payload length field of a IPv6 header
if another header is added or updated within a packet. While static-typing
captures interface specifications and how packet contents should behave, it
does not enforce precise invariants around runtime dependencies like the
examples above. Instead, during the design phase of network functions,
programmers should be given an easier way to specify checks up front, all
without having to account for and keep track of these consequences at each and
every step during the development cycle. In keeping with this view, we present
a unique approach for adding and generating both static checks and dynamic
contracts for specifying and checking packet processing operations. We develop
our technique within an existing framework called NetBricks and demonstrate how
our approach simplifies and checks common dependent packet and header
processing logic that other systems take for granted, all without adding much

The 18S ribosomal RNA sequence of the sea anemone <i>Ammonia sulcata</i> and its evolutionary position among other eukaryotes
Evolutionary trees based on partial small ribosomal subunit RNA sequences of 22 metazoa species have been published [(1988) Science 239, 748-753]. In these trees, cnidarians (Radiata) seemed to have evolved independently from the Bilateria, which is in contradiction with the general evolutionary view. In order to further investigate this problem, the complete srRNA sequence of the sea anemone Ammonia sulcata was determined and evolutionary trees were constructed using a matrix optimization method. In the tree thus obtained the sea anemone and Bilateria together form a monophyletic cluster, with the sea anemone forming the first line of descent of the metazoan group
Uptake and Effects of the e-Vita Personal Health Record with Self-Management Support and Coaching, for Type 2 Diabetes Patients Treated in Primary Care
We studied the use, uptake, and effects of e-Vita, a personal health record, with self-management support and personalized asynchronized coaching, for type 2 diabetes patients treated in primary care. Patients were invited by their practice nurse to join the study aimed at testing use and effects of a personal health record. Patients were followed up for 6 months. Uptake and usage were monitored using log data. Outcomes were self-reported diabetes self-care, diabetes-related distress, and emotional wellbeing. Patients’ health status was collected from their medical chart. 132 patients agreed to participate in the study of which less than half (46.1%) did not return to the personal health record after 1st login. Only 5 patients used the self-management support program within the personal health record, 3 of whom asked a coach for feedback. Low use of the personal health record was registered. No statistical significant differences on any of the outcome measures were found between baseline and 6 month follow-up. This study showed minimal impact of implementing a personal health record including self-management support in primary diabetes care. Successful adoption of web-based platforms, as ongoing patient centered care, is hard to achieve without additional strategies aimed at enhancing patient motivation and engaging professionals
Nuclear structure of 30S and its implications for nucleosynthesis in classical novae
The uncertainty in the 29P(p,gamma)30S reaction rate over the temperature
range of 0.1 - 1.3 GK was previously determined to span ~4 orders of magnitude
due to the uncertain location of two previously unobserved 3+ and 2+ resonances
in the 4.7 - 4.8 MeV excitation region in 30S. Therefore, the abundances of
silicon isotopes synthesized in novae, which are relevant for the
identification of presolar grains of putative nova origin, were uncertain by a
factor of 3. To investigate the level structure of 30S above the proton
threshold (4394.9(7) keV), a charged-particle spectroscopy and an in-beam
gamma-ray spectroscopy experiments were performed. Differential cross sections
of the 32S(p,t)30S reaction were measured at 34.5 MeV. Distorted wave Born
approximation calculations were performed to constrain the spin-parity
assignments of the observed levels. An energy level scheme was deduced from
gamma-gamma coincidence measurements using the 28Si(3He,n-gamma)30S reaction.
Spin-parity assignments based on measurements of gamma-ray angular
distributions and gamma-gamma directional correlation from oriented nuclei were
made for most of the observed levels of 30S. As a result, the resonance
energies corresponding to the excited states in 4.5 MeV - 6 MeV region,
including the two astrophysically important states predicted previously, are
measured with significantly better precision than before. The uncertainty in
the rate of the 29P(p,gamma)30S reaction is substantially reduced over the
temperature range of interest. Finally, the influence of this rate on the
abundance ratios of silicon isotopes synthesized in novae are obtained via 1D
hydrodynamic nova simulations.Comment: 22 pages, 12 figure
Photosynthetic activity buffers ocean acidification in seagrass meadows
Macrophytes growing in shallow coastal zones characterised by intense
metabolic activity have the capacity to modify pH within their canopy and
beyond. We observed diel pH changes in shallow (5–12 m) seagrass
(<i>Posidonia oceanica</i>) meadows spanning 0.06 pH units in September to
0.24 units in June. The carbonate system (pH, DIC, and aragonite saturation
state (Ω<sub>Ar</sub>)) and O<sub>2</sub> within the meadows displayed strong
diel variability driven by primary productivity, and changes in chemistry
were related to structural parameters of the meadow, in particular, the leaf
surface area available for photosynthesis (LAI). LAI was positively
correlated to mean, max and range pH<sub>NBS</sub> and max and range
Ω<sub>Ar</sub>. In June, vertical mixing (as Turbulent Kinetic Energy)
influenced max and min Ω<sub>Ar</sub>, while in September there was no
effect of hydrodynamics on the carbonate system within the canopy. Max and
range Ω<sub>Ar</sub> within the meadow showed a positive trend with the
calcium carbonate load of the leaves, pointing to a possible link between
structural parameters, Ω<sub>Ar</sub> and carbonate deposition.

Calcifying organisms, e.g. epiphytes with carbonate skeletons, may benefit
from the modification of the carbonate system by the meadow. There is,
however, concern for the ability of seagrasses to provide modifications of
similar importance in the future. The predicted decline of seagrass meadows
may alter the scope for alteration of pH within a seagrass meadow and in the
water column above the meadow, particularly if shoot density and biomass
decline, on which LAI is based. Organisms associated with seagrass
communities may therefore suffer from the loss of pH buffering capacity in
degraded meadows
Autistic Traits, Empathizing–Systemizing, and Gender Diversity
Previous research indicates a link between autism and transgender and gender-diverse identities, though the association is not yet fully understood. The current study examined autistic traits (Autism Spectrum Quotient [AQ]), empathizing (Empathizing Quotient-Short [EQ-S]), and systemizing (Systemizing Quotient-Short [SQ-S]) in a sample of 89 adults and aimed to test whether gender-diverse individuals exhibit cognitive profiles consistent with predictions derived from the Extreme Male Brain (EMB) theory. As most research has considered only cisgender people, we recruited a more diverse sample by contacting > 200 UK LGBTQ+ organizations and posting on social media. A range of non-cisgender identities (e.g., transgender male, transgender female, non-binary, genderqueer, transmasculine) and non-heterosexual orientations (e.g., bisexual) were represented, and participants were categorized into one of four groups: (1) assigned female at birth but does not identify as female (transgender AFAB) (n = 32), (2) cisgender female (n = 21), (3) assigned male at birth but does not identify as male (transgender AMAB) (n = 18), and (4) cisgender male (n = 18). After controlling for age and autism diagnostic status, transgender AFAB participants had marginally higher AQ scores, and significantly higher SQ-S and systemizing-relative-to-empathizing (D) scores, compared with the cisgender female group. No such differences were detected between the transgender AMAB and cisgender male groups. Our findings are broadly in line with predictions derived from the EMB theory, though as no transgender AFAB participants reported being heterosexual, it was not possible to determine whether these effects relate specifically to gender identity, to sexual orientation, or to both
