An unusual presentation of degenerating fibroid
Degeneration in a fibroid is seen when the blood supply falls inadequate to support the center of fibroid. Usually degeneration in a fibroid requires a symptomatic medical management. This is a case report of a degenerating fibroid that uncommonly presented in postpartum period as a retroperitoneal abscess requiring exploratory laparotomy
An unusual case of labial fusion
Labial fusion is sealing of labia minora in midline. It is also known as Labial adhesion or Labial agglutination or synechia vulvae. This condition is common in pre-pubertal females when estrogen levels are low and commonly resolves spontaneously post-puberty. Usually asymptomatic and typically treated conservatively. Medical treatment includes use of estrogen cream or betamethasone cream. Surgical treatment rarely required, if not responding to medical treatment or dense adhesions. This case report is unusual as it presented in a post-pubertal female and which needed surgical management

In the present study, we aimed to investigate their placental transcript synthesis, labor associated differential expression and localization at feto-maternal interface, and their functional implication in spontaneous labor. The study involved using feto-maternal interface (placental/decidual tissues) from two groups of healthy pregnant women at term (≥37 weeks of gestation), undergoing either elective C-section with no labor ('NLc' group, n = 5), or normal vaginal delivery with spontaneous labor ('SLv' group, n = 5). The immune function of SP-D, on term placental explants, was analyzed for cytokine profile using multiplexed cytokine array. SP-A, SP-D and MBL transcripts were observed in the term placenta. The 'SLv' group showed significant up-regulation of SP-D (p = 0.001), and down-regulation of SP-A (p = 0.005), transcripts and protein compared to the 'NLc' group. Significant increase in 43 kDa and 50 kDa SP-D forms in placental and decidual tissues was associated with the spontaneous labor (p<0.05). In addition, the MMP-9-cleaved form of SP-D (25 kDa) was significantly higher in the placentae of 'SLv' group compared to the 'NLc' group (p = 0.002). Labor associated cytokines IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, TNF-α and MCP-1 showed significant increase (p<0.05) in a dose dependent manner in the placental explants treated with nSP-D and rhSP-D. In conclusion, the study emphasizes that SP-A and SP-D proteins associate with the spontaneous labor and SP-D plausibly contributes to the pro-inflammatory immune milieu of feto-maternal tissues.Funding provided by BT/PR15227/BRB/10/906/2011) Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India http://dbtindia.nic.in/index.asp (TM) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)/Senior Research Fellowship (SRF), Government of India, www.icmr.nic.in (AKY)

Current Status and Advancement in Thermal and Membrane-Based Hybrid Seawater Desalination Technologies
Emerging hybrid technologies have better potential than conventional technology for diversifying the desalination industry, which is presently being dominated by thermal and membrane-based desalination. Notwithstanding the technological maturity of the desalination processes, they remain highly energy-intensive processes and have certain disadvantages. Therefore, the hybridization of thermal and membrane desalination processes holds great attention to mitigate limitations of individual processes in terms of energy consumption, quality and quantity of potable water, overall efficiency and productivity. This paper provides an oversight of conventional and developing desalination technologies, emphasizing their existing state and subsequent potential to reduce water scarcity. Conventional hybrid desalination systems (NF-RO-MSF, MED-AD, FO-MED, MSF-MED, RO-MED, RO-MSF and RO-MD) are briefly discussed. This study reveals that the integration of solar thermal energy with desalination has a great potential to substantially reduce greenhouse emissions besides providing the quality and/or quantity of potable water in cost-effective ways. Due to its abundant availability with minimal/no carbon footprint and the ability to generate both thermal and electrical energy, solar energy is considered better than other renewable energy technologies. The findings further suggest that hybrid desalination systems are technically sound and environmentally suitable; however, a significant study of the research process and development is still required to make this technology efficient and economically viable
Giant appendicolith mimicking as foreign body: A case report
Acute appendicitis is one of the most common surgical emergencies. However, atypical clinical presentation and imaging can cause diagnostic confusion. We report a case of a 3Â yr old girl with doubtful history of foreign body ingestion and presenting to us with features of sub acute intestinal obstruction. Serial Computerized Tomography scans (CT) were suggestive of single foreign body (FB) in distal illeum with high attenuation. But the nature of FB could not be determined on history or imaging. However on exploration there was acute appendicitis with a giant appendicolith at the base of the appendix. Appendectomy with retrieval of the appendicolith was done. Post operatively patient had complete relief of symptoms
Glycated proteome: from reaction to intervention
Glycation, a nonenzymatic reaction between reducing sugars and proteins, is a proteome wide phenomenon, predominantly observed in diabetes due to hyperglycemia. Glycated proteome of plasma, kidney, lens, and brain are implicated in the pathogenesis of various diseases, including diabetic complications, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, and aging. This review discusses the strategies to characterize protein glycation, its functional implications in different diseases, and intervention strategies to protect the deleterious effects of protein glycation
Thoracoscopic excision of a large posterior mediastinal lipoblastoma in a 4 year old girl: Review of literature
Majority of lipoblastomas arise in the superficial tissues of the extremities, but they can occasionally be found in neck and abdomen. Lipomatous tumors located in the mediastinum are extremely rare, and if found they are more commonly located in anterior mediastinum than in the posterior. We report a case of large posterior mediastinal lipoblastoma extending into the superior mediastinum in a 4 year old girl. Child presented with respiratory distress. The computed tomography scan was suggestive of posterior and superior mediastinal fat attenuating non-enhancing mass of size 6.5 × 4.8 × 2.7 cm complete thoracoscopic excision of mass was done. Histopathology of the excised specimen was suggestive of lipoblastoma. At 3 months follow-up. There is no residual tumor or recurrence
