Sister Cities International: A Global Citizen Diplomacy Network

Sister Cities International (SCI) is a nonprofit citizen diplomacy network that creates and strengthens partnerships between U.S. communities and international communities. Sister Cities International was founded by President Eisenhower during a White House Summit on Citizen Diplomacy on September 11-12, 1956. Sister Cities International strives to build global cooperation at the municipal level, promote cultural understanding and stimulate economic and educational development

Integrating Technology into Secondary Social Studies Curricula

The social studies teacher preparation program described in this article is a 5th-year Masters of Education degree and licensure program—a graduate program preceded by a 4-year history or social science education degree offered by the College of Liberal Arts. The social studies graduate program aims at preparing teaching candidates to learn knowledge and skills necessary to plan and teach technology-rich lesson plans and resource units. Teaching candidates are required to apply new technology skills to actual classrooms, while collaborating with cooperating teachers. The program is designed to be compliant with the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) Program Review, which is a component of the accreditation process implemented by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). As a member of the NCATE Board of Examiners and auditor for the NCATE Program Review, the author is acutely aware of the current role played by educational technology in the assessment of given units or programs, as well as in specific candidate assessment for the preparation of PK-12 classroom teachers

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards: Professional Assessment for Teachers of Students with Exceptional Needs

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) has established five areas of Exceptional Needs as new certification areas: Early Childhood through Young Adult/Exceptional Needs (birth to 8 years), Mild and Moderately Impaired (5 to 21+ years), Severe and Multiply Impaired (5 to 21+ years), Visually Impaired (birth to 21+ years), and Deaf/Hard of Hearing (birth to 21 + years). Pre K - 12+ Exceptional Needs teachers may now be recognized by their schools, communities, state, and nation as master teachers. Teachers are clearly central to planning, implementing, developing, and modifying NBPTS policies and procedures. Only Special Needs educators will assess Special Needs educators as NBPTS candidates

The Great War Centenary Tour: Summer 2014

In addition to visiting Key WWI sites in Belgium and France, the 2014-2018 The Great War Centenary Tour included the Bayeux Tapestry, depicting the victory of William the Conqueror in the Battle of Hastings of 1066; a visit to one of France’s most iconic attractions: Mont Saint-Michel; Bruges, Belgium one of the best preserved medieval towns in all of Europe; as well as the beaches of the D-Day landings with visits at several German bunkers, the Pegasus Bridge, and the Arromanches landing site; and a visit the Omaha Beach site and museum before moving on to Pont du Hoc and St. Mere Eglise. For those who teach and study history, the tour included much that is relevant to the teaching of history. Also note that there was no attempt to visit any of the Eastern Front WWI sites
