    On Echo Outbursts and ER UMa Supercycles in SU UMa-type Cataclysmic Variables

    I present a variation on Osaki's tidal-thermal-instability model for SU UMa behavior. I suggest that in systems with the lowest mass ratios, the angular-momentum dissipation in an eccentric disk is unable to sustain the disk on the hot side of the thermal instability. This decoupling of the tidal and thermal instabilities in systems with q < 0.07 allows a better explanation of the `echo' outbursts of EG Cnc and the short supercycles of RZ LMi and DI UMa.     The accretion flow in the discless intermediate polar V2400 Ophiuchi

    RXTE observations confirm that the X-ray lightcurve of V2400 Oph is pulsed at the beat cycle, as expected in a discless intermediate polar. There are no X-ray modulations at the orbital or spin cycles, but optical line profiles vary with all three cycles. We construct a model for line-profile variations in a discless accretor, based on the idea that the accretion stream flips from one magnetic pole to the other, and show that this accounts for the observed behaviour over the spin and beat cycles. The minimal variability over the orbital cycle implies that 1) V2400 Oph is at an inclination of only ~10 deg, and 2) much of the accretion flow is not in a coherent stream, but is circling the white dwarf, possibly as a ring of denser, diamagnetic blobs.     An EUV Study of the Intermediate Polar EX Hydrae

    On 2000 May 5, we began a large multi-wavelength campaign to study the intermediate polar, EX Hydrae. The simultaneous observations from six satellites and four telescopes were centered around a one million second observation with EUVE. Although EX Hydrae has been studied previously with EUVE, our higher signal-to-noise observations present new results and challenge the current IP models. Previously unseen dips in the light curve are reminiscent of the stream dips seen in polar light curves. Also of interest is the temporal extent of the bulge dip; approximately 0.5 in phase, implying that the bulge extends over half of the accretion disk. We propose that the magnetic field in EX Hydrae is strong enough (a few MG) to begin pulling material directly from the outer edge of the disk, thereby forming a large accretion curtain which would produce a very broad bulge dip. This would also result in magnetically controlled accretion streams originating from the outer edge of the disk. We also present a period analysis of the photometric data which shows numerous beat frequencies with strong power and also intermittent and wandering frequencies, an indication that physical conditions within EX Hya changed over the course of the observation. Iron spectral line ratios give a temperature of log T=6.5-6.9 K for all spin phases and a poorly constrained density of n_e=10^10-10^11 cm^-3 for the emitting plasma.     Variability and multi-periodic oscillations in the X-ray light curve of the classical nova V4743 Sgr

    The classical nova V4743 Sgr was observed with XMM-Newton for about 10 hours on April 4 2003, 6.5 months after optical maximum. At this time, this nova had become the brightest supersoft X-ray source ever observed. We present the results of a time series analysis performed on the X-ray light curve obtained in this observation, and in a previous shorter observation done with Chandra 16 days earlier. Intense variability, with amplitude as large as 40% of the total flux, was observed both times. Similarities can be found between the two observations in the structure of the variations. Most of the variability is well represented as a combination of oscillations at a set of discrete frequencies lower than 1.7 mHz. At least five frequencies are constant over the 16 day time interval between the two observations. We suggest that a periods in the power spectrum of both light curves at the frequency of 0.75 mHz and its first harmonic are related to the spin period of the white dwarf in the system, and that other observed frequencies are signatures of nonradial white dwarf pulsations. A possible signal with a 24000 sec period is also found in the XMM-Newton light curve: a cycle and a half are clearly identified. This period is consistent with the 24278 s periodicity discovered in the optical light curve of the source and thought to be the orbital period of the nova binary system.Comment: In press in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Societ

    Rapid Oscillations in Cataclysmic Variables. XVI. DW Cancri

    We report photometry and spectroscopy of the novalike variable DW Cancri. The spectra show the usual broad H and He emission lines, with an excitation and continuum slope characteristic of a moderately high accretion rate. A radial-velocity search yields strong detections at two periods, 86.1015(3) min and 38.58377(6) min. We interpret these as respectively the orbital period P_orb of the binary, and the spin period P_spin of a magnetic white dwarf. The light curve also shows the spin period, plus an additional strong signal at 69.9133(10) min, which coincides with the difference frequency 1/P_spin-1/P_orb. These periods are stable over the 1 year baseline of measurement. This triply-periodic structure mimics the behavior of several well-credentialed members of the "DQ Herculis" (intermediate polar) class of cataclysmic variables. DQ Her membership is also suggested by the mysteriously strong sideband signal (at nu_spin-nu_orb), attesting to a strong pulsed flux at X-ray/EUV/UV wavelengths.     Evaluating the effectiveness of a young driver-education intervention: Learn2Live

    Road traffic collisions are the leading cause of death among young adults, and behaviour change interventions play a key role in battling this public health concern. Road safety interventions are often educational and have traditionally relied on fear appeals to alter risky driving behaviour - yet there is a paucity of data regarding their effectiveness. Peer-education has been championed as an additional route to promoting safe driving behaviour. To examine these issues, this study evaluated the effectiveness of a fear appeal intervention in improving young drivers’ attitudes towards risky driving behaviour. A total sample of 800 high school and college students (16-20 years old) completed a similar set of questionnaires pre- and post-intervention and at a 3-month follow-up. Two different types of follow-up interventions were also compared: a peer-led and an expert-led road safety educational event. Measures evaluating attitudes towards risky driving behaviour were completed at all 3 time frames, and questions regarding the participants' perception of the follow-up event were asked. Overall, our data showed an improvement in attitudes towards risky driving behaviours both immediately after the intervention and three months later. These changes were especially evident among females. With regard to the follow-ups, both were effective in improving the attitudes towards risky driving. However, the peer-led event was preferred by the participants compared to the expert-led follow-up

    The Discovery of an Anomalous X-ray Pulsar in the Supernova Remnant Kes 73

    We report the discovery of pulsed X-ray emission from the compact source 1E 1841-045, using data obtained with the Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics. The X-ray source is located in the center of the small-diameter supernova remnant (SNR) Kes 73 and is very likely to be the compact stellar-remnant of the supernova which formed Kes 73. The X-rays are pulsed with a period of ~ 11.8 s, and a sinusoidal modulation of roughly 30 %. We interpret this modulation to be the rotation period of an embedded neutron star, and as such would be the longest spin period for an isolated neutron star to-date. This is especially remarkable since the surrounding SNR is very young, at ~ 2000 yr old. We suggest that the observed characteristics of this object are best understood within the framework of a neutron star with an enormous dipolar magnetic field, B ~ 8x10^14 G

    Measuring optimism bias among military personnel

    High numbers of young military personnel die due to road traffic collisions (RTCs). Yet, there is a paucity of research related to the contributing factors (i.e., optimism bias and willingness to take risks) associated with RTCs and the examination of road safety education program tailored at reducing young military fatalities. In order to address this gap in the literature, we examined one specific road safety educational intervention tailored for the UK military personnel and investigated their attitudes towards the program, optimism bias and willingness to take risks. Measures evaluating their optimism bias, willingness to take risks and attitudes towards the program were asked after the participants attended the road safety interventions. The results revealed that young military personnel, aged 18–25, had higher optimism bias and willingness to take risks compared to older military personnel, and that this effect diminishes with age. The results provide importance evidence related to military personnel's attitudes to risk-taking

    XMM-Newton confirmation of a new intermediate polar: XMMU J185330.7-012815

    We report the results from a detailed spectro-imaging and temporal analysis of an archival XMM-Newton observation of a new intermediate polar XMMU J185330.7-012815. Its X-ray spectrum can be well-described by a multi-temperature thermal plasma model with the K-lines of heavy elements clearly detected. Possible counterparts of XMMU J185330.7-012815 have been identified in optical and UV bands. The low value of the inferred X-ray-to-UV and X-ray-to-optical flux ratios help to safely rule out the possibility as an isolated neutron star. We confirm the X-ray periodicity of ~238 s, but different from the previous preliminary result, we do not find any convincing evidence of phase-shift in this observation. We further investigate its properties through an energy-resolved temporal analysis and find the pulsed fraction monotonically increases with energy.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in MNRA

    New Measurements of Orbital Period Change in Cygnus X-3

    A nonlinear nature of the binary ephemeris of Cygnus X-3 indicates either a change in the orbital period or an apsidal motion of the orbit. We have made extended observations of Cygnus X-3 with the Pointed Proportional Counters (PPCs) of the Indian X-ray Astronomy Experiment (IXAE) during 1999 July 3-13 and October 11-14. Using the data from these observations and the archival data from ROSAT, ASCA, BeppoSAX and RXTE, we have extended the data base for this source. Adding these new arrival time measurements to the published results, we make a comparison between the various possibilities, (a) orbital decay due to mass loss from the system, (b) mass transfer between the stars, and (c) apsidal motion of the orbit due to gravitational interaction between the two components.
