    A BeppoSAX observation of the super-soft source CAL87

    We report on a BeppoSAX Concentrator Spectrometer observation of the super-soft source (SSS) CAL87. The X-ray emission in SSS is believed to arise from nuclear burning of accreted material on the surface of a white dwarf (WD). An absorbed blackbody spectral model gives a chi^2_v of 1.18 and a temperature of 42 +/- ^13 _11 eV. However, the derived luminosity and radius are greater than the Eddington limit and radius of a WD. Including an O viii edge at 0.871 keV gives a significantly better fit (at > 95% confidence) and results in more realistic values of the source luminosity and radius. We also fit WD atmosphere models to the CAL87 spectrum. These also give reasonable bolometric luminosities and radii in the ranges 2.7-4.8 10^{36} erg/s and 8-20 10^7 cm, respectively. These results support the view that the X-ray emission from CAL87 results from nuclear burning in the atmosphere of a WD.Comment: 4 pages. Accepted for publication in A&A (Letters

    XTE J1739-302: An Unusual New X-ray Transient

    A new x-ray transient, designated XTE J1739-302, was discovered with the Proportional Counter Array (PCA) on the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) in data from 12 August 1997. Although it was the brightest source in the Galactic Center region while active (about 3.0 x 10^-9 ergs/cm2/s from 2 to 25 keV), it was only observed on that one day; it was not detectable nine days earlier or two days later. There is no known counterpart at other wavelengths, and its proximity to the Galactic Center will make such an identification difficult due to source confusion and extinction. The x-ray spectrum and intensity suggest a giant outburst of a Be/neutron star binary, although no pulsations were observed and the outburst was shorter than is usual from these systems.Comment: 11 pages incorporating 6 figures, AAStex; accepted for The Astrophysical Journal, Part 2 (Letters

    Supersoft X-Ray Sources in M31

    The nearby Andromeda galaxy (M31) has been observed with the ROSAT PSPC in a mosaic of 6 pointings with 25 ksec each. In the paper describing the results on the total sample of detected sources, Supper et al. (1996) also report the positions for 15 supersoft X-ray sources and the blackbody fit results for the brightest of these sources. We report here in more detail on the X-ray spectral characteristics of all these 15 supersoft X-ray sources. Optical multi-colour photometric data obtained in 1990 at the Michigan- Dartmouth-MIT Observatory at Kitt Peak were used originally in the selection process of the supersoft sources, and are the basis for the finding charts given here for most selected X-ray sources.Comment: 8 pages postscript incl. figures, Proc. of Workshop on Supersoft X-Ray Sources, to appear in Lecture Notes in Physics vol. 472 (1996

    Carbon Flashes in the Heavy Element Ocean on Accreting Neutron Stars

    We show that burning of a small mass fraction of carbon in a neutron star ocean is thermally unstable at low accumulated masses when the ocean contains heavy ashes from the hydrogen burning rapid proton (rp) process. The key to early unstable ignition is the low thermal conductivity of a heavy element ocean. The instability requires accretion rates in excess of one-tenth the Eddington limit when the carbon mass fraction is 0.1 or less. The unstable flashes release 10^{42} to 10^{43} ergs over hours to days, and are likely the cause of the recently discovered large Type I X-ray bursts (so-called ``superbursts'') from six Galactic low mass X-ray binaries. In addition to explaining the energetics, recurrence times, and durations of the superbursts, these mixed carbon/heavy element flashes have an accretion rate dependence of unstable burning similar to that observed. Though the instability is present at accretion rates near Eddington, there is less contrast with the accretion luminosity there, explaining why most detections are made at accretion rates between 0.1 and 0.3 Eddington.     Radio Monitoring of the January 11, 1997 Gamma-Ray Burst

    We report on a comprehensive radio monitoring program of the bright gamma-ray burster GRB970111. These VLA observations were made at a frequency of 1.4 GHz and span a range of post-burst timescales between 28 hours and one month. Despite extensive sampling at sub-milliJansky sensitivities, no radio source was detected above 0.5 mJy in the current best error box (~14 arcmin^2) for GRB970111. A highly unusual radio source, VLA J1528.7+1945, was seen to drop in flux density by a factor of two in our monitoring period but it lies outside the error box and thus it is unlikely to be related to GRB970111. Cosmological fireball models of gamma-ray bursts make predictions of late-time emission occurring at longer wavelengths. The absence of a flaring or fading radio counterpart to GRB970111 provides strong constraints on these models.Comment: ApJ Let (accepted

    Phase-resolved HST/STIS spectroscopy of the exposed white dwarf in the high-field polar AR UMa

    Phase-resolved HST/STIS ultraviolet spectroscopy of the high-field polar AR UMa confirms that the WD photospheric Ly alpha Zeeman features are formed in a magnetic field of ~200 MG. In addition to the Ly alpha pi and sigma+ components, we detect the forbidden hydrogen 1s0->2s0 transition, which becomes ``enabled'' in the presence of both strong magnetic and electric fields. Our attempt in fitting the overall optical+UV low state spectrum with single temperature magnetic WD models remains rather unsatisfactory, indicating either a shortcoming in the present models or a new physical process acting in AR UMa. As a result, our estimate of the WD temperature remains somewhat uncertain, Twd=20000+-5000K. We detect a broad emission bump centered at ~1445A and present throughout the entire binary orbit, and a second bump near ~1650A, which appears only near the inferior conjunction of the secondary star. These are suggestive of low harmonic cyclotron emission produced by low-level (M-dot~1e-13 Msun/yr) accretion onto both magnetic poles. However, there is no evidence in the power spectrum of light variations for accretion in gas blobs. The observed Ly alpha emission line shows a strong phase dependence with maximum flux and redshift near orbital phase phi~0.3, strongly indicating an origin on the trailing hemisphere of the secondary star. An additional Ly alpha absorption feature with similar phasing as the Ly alpha emission, but a \~700km/s blueshift could tentatively be ascribed to absorption of WD emission in a moderately fast wind.     Is transactional sex exploitative? A social norms perspective, with implications for interventions with adolescent girls and young women in Tanzania

    Although transactional sex is common in many sexual relationships, there has been little research into the degree to which the practice is considered exploitative in the settings in which it is practiced. We describe the social norms that influence transactional sex in two sites in Mwanza, Tanzania, and explore local understandings of whether and under what conditions it is considered exploitative. We then compare these "emic" understandings of exploitation to international definitions and norms around sexual exploitation. This study employed a qualitative research design involving 18 focus group discussions and 43 in-depth interviews with young people aged 14-24 years and parents with children aged 14-24 years in a rural area and an urban center within Mwanza, Tanzania. Thematic analysis was conducted with the aid of NVivo 10. The social norms influencing the practice of transactional sex included: reciprocity as a core cultural value that permeates the way exchange in sexual relationships is judged; gendered expectations that men should provide for women's material needs in sexual relationships and that women should reciprocate by means of sex; and peer pressure to be perceived as "fashionable". Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) are under strong peer pressure to conform to a "modern lifestyle" as reflected in stylish clothing and other items of modernity such as cellphones. The emic conceptualization of exploitation is defined by circumstances surrounding the relationship or a sexual encounter. Important factors that characterize local notions of when transactional relationships are considered exploitative include: when the encounter or relationship involves an imbalance of power (based on age, male economic power and social status); when a man fails to reciprocate; and when sex is coerced. According to community perspectives, young women's behavior should be considered exploitative of men when they take gifts or money yet refuse sex or when they demand large sums of money. Interventions aimed at reducing AGYW's exploitation through transactional sex need to be cognizant of the variations in the understanding of what constitutes sexual exploitation as well as the social and gender norms influencing the practice of transactional sex. Interventions need to involve communities and families in critical thinking that helps them identify positive alternatives to current gendered social norms that shape the involvement of AGYW and men in transactional sex

    Broad band X-ray spectral properties of Gamma-ray bursts with BeppoSAX

    In about one year, five gamma-ray bursts were simultaneously observed with the Wide Field Cameras and Gamma Ray Burst Monitor aboard the BeppoSAX satellite. From some of them X-ray afterglow emission has been clearly detected with the same satellite. In order to understand how GRB emission is related to the X-ray afterglow, we are performing a systematic study of the spectral properties of these events.
