    Implications from Responsible Human-Robot Interaction with Anthropomorphic Service Robots for Design Science

    Accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, anthropomorphic service robots are continuously penetrating various domains of our daily lives. With this development, the urge for an interdisciplinary approach to responsibly design human-robot interaction (HRI), with particular attention to human dignity, privacy, compliance, and transparency, increases. This paper contributes to design science, in developing a new artifact, i.e., an interdisciplinary framework for designing responsible HRI with anthropomorphic service robots, which covers the three design science research cycles. Furthermore, we propose a multi-method approach by applying this interdisciplinary framework. Thereby, our finding offer implications for designing HRI in a responsible manner

    Investigating the Effects of Mood & Usage Behaviour on Notification Response Time

    Notifications are one of the most prevailing mechanisms on smartphones and personal computers to convey timely and important information. Despite these benefits, smartphone notifications demand individuals' attention and can cause stress and frustration when delivered at inopportune timings. This paper investigates the effect of individuals' smartphone usage behavior and mood on notification response time. We conduct an in-the-wild study with more than 18 participants for five weeks. Extensive experiment results show that the proposed regression model is able to accurately predict the response time of smartphone notifications using current user's mood and physiological signals. We explored the effect of different features for each participant to choose the most important user-oriented features in order to to achieve a meaningful and personalised notification response prediction. On average, our regression model achieved over all participants an MAE of 0.7764 ms and RMSE of 1.0527 ms. We also investigate how physiological signals (collected from E4 wristbands) are used as an indicator for mood and discuss the individual differences in application usage and categories of smartphone applications on the response time of notifications.     Physiological data for affective computing in HRI with anthropomorphic service robots: the AFFECT-HRI data set

    In human-human and human-robot interaction, the counterpart influences the human’s affective state. Contrary to humans, robots inherently cannot respond empathically, meaning non-beneficial affective reactions cannot be mitigated. Thus, to create a responsible and empathetic human-robot interaction (HRI), involving anthropomorphic service robots, the effect of robot behavior on human affect in HRI must be understood. To contribute to this understanding, we provide the new comprehensive data set AFFECT-HRI, including, for the first time, physiological data labeled with human affect (i.e., emotions and mood) gathered from a conducted HRI study. Within the study, 146 participants interacted with an anthropomorphic service robot in a realistic and complex retail scenario. The participants’ questionnaire ratings regarding affect, demographics, and socio-technical ratings are provided in the data set. Five different conditions (i.e., neutral, transparency, liability, moral, and immoral) were considered during the study, eliciting different affective reactions and allowing interdisciplinary investigations (e.g., computer science, law, and psychology).     Snorkelling and trampling in shallow-water fringing reefs: Risk assessment and proposed management strategy

    Shallow reefs (reef flats <1.5 m) in the northern Red Sea are impacted by growing tourism that includes swimmers, snorkellers and reef walkers but have largely been neglected in past studies. We selected a fringing reef along the lagoon of Dahab (Sinai, Egypt) as a model for a management strategy. Point-intercept line transects were used to determine substrate composition, coral community and condition, and the coral damage index (CDI) was applied. Approximately 84% of the coral colonies showed signs of damage such as breakage, partial mortality or algal overgrowth, especially affecting the most frequent coral genus Acropora. Questionnaires were used to determine the visitors’ socio-economic background and personal attitudes regarding snorkelling, SCUBA-diving and interest in visiting a prospective snorkelling trail. Experiencing nature (97%) was by far the strongest motivation, and interest in further education about reef ecology and skill training was high. Less experienced snorkellers and divers – the target group for further education and skill training – were those most prepared to financially support such a trail. We therefore recommend a guided underwater snorkelling trail and restricting recreational use to a less sensitive ‘ecotourism zone’ while protecting the shallow reef flat. Artificial structures can complete the trail and offer the opportunity to snorkel over deeper areas at unfavourable tide or wind conditions. This approach provides a strategy for the management and conservation of shallow-water reefs, which are facing increasing human impact here and elsewhere
