Including students with special needs in physical education
The initial aim was to study how regular physical education in integrated settings has been planned and implemented for students with special needs in Finnish comprehensive and upper secondary schools. As the project progressed, the need for an inclusion strategy for the Finnish educational ecosystem became evident. The study comprised three successive phases. In Phase I, the most important needs of classroom teachers (n=169) and physical education teachers (n=138) in the delivery of adapted physical education services together with their
beliefs about barriers to integration or inclusion were studied. In Phase II, the perceived physical competence of students with and without physical disabilities (n=60) attending different educational settings was investigated. In Phase m, an adapted physical education consultant model was developed to assist teachers to include students with special needs in regular physical education. This model was tested through two case studies, one with intensive and one with limited consultant assistance. The results, in Phase I, indicated that both classroom teachers and physical education teachers desire and need more knowledge and skills in adapted physical education. Attitude barriers were perceived as the biggest problem among teachers. In Phase II, the results indicated that students with physical disabilities, regardless of placement, had significantly lower values of perceived fitness than nondisabled students. The overall conclusion from Phases I and II was that regular physical education does not provide a supportive enough learning environment for integrated students. In Phase III, support from the adapted physical education consultant proved to be an effective
strategy for inclusion. The results indicated that classroom teachers, students, and paraprofessionals all benefited from the consultant approach
Exploring in-class physical activity levels during physical education lessons in Finland
This research aimed to measure in-class physical activity levels during physical education in grades
seven to nine, and to determine the influence of gender and lesson content on such activity levels. Data was
collected from 96 lessons across 14 secondary schools. Heart rate data consisted of 821 valid measurements. The
mean heart rate across the data set was 135 beats per minute and students engaged in moderate-to-vigorous
physical activity 41% of lesson time. Students were most active during game lessons and there was an evident
gender difference, with boys being more active. However, when the impact of lesson content and gender on
physical activity were tested simultaneously by multi-level logistic regression, the impact of gender was no
longer significant. The findings indicate that the gender difference in the activity levels was rooted in having
different lessons content for gender groups with boys having games more often than girls do.peerReviewe
Video-reflektoinnin ja observointimenetelmien hyödyntäminen liikunnanopettajakoulutuksessa
Liikunnanopettajalta edellytetään pedagogisia ja didaktisia taitoja
sekä herkkyyttä reagoida vaihteleviin opetustapahtumiin. Oman
työn kehittäminen ja ongelmallisten tilanteiden ratkaiseminen vaatii
opettajalta taitoa reflektoida opetusta ja muuttaa tarvittaessa opetuskäyttäytymistään.
Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoitus oli selvittää, miten
liikunnanopiskelijat reflektoivat omaa opetuskäyttäytymistään Tutkiva
opettaja -kurssilla, jossa analysoidaan omaa opetuskäyttäytymistä
erilaisia observointimenetelmiä ja videoita apuna käyttäen. Tavoitteena
Tutkimuksen kohdejoukkona
oli 32 liikuntapedagogiikan opiskelijaa, 15 mies- ja 17 naisopiskelijaa.
Kurssilla oli keskeisenä menetelmänä video-reflektointi. Video-reflektointi
toteutettiin siten, että opiskelijat toimivat opettajina
pienoisopetustilanteissa, jotka kuvattiin, ja tämän jälkeen opiskelijat
analysoivat omaa opetustaan videolta käyttäen apuna observointimenetelmiä.
Tulokset osoittivat, että konkreettisen observointimateriaalin
avulla opiskelijat pääsivät kiinni oman opetuksen ja opettajuuden
reflektointiin jo koulutuksen alkutaipaleella. Opiskelijat reflektoivat
opetustaan teknisellä ja tulkinnallisella tasolla. Opetuksen videointi
Koulun
liikuntatunneille osallistuvat kuitenkin kaikki oppilaat, myös vapaaajallaan vähän liikkuvat. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää, millä
sykealueella yläkoulun oppilaat liikkuvat liikuntatunnilla ja kuinka
suuren osan tunnista sykkeet ovat terveyttä edistävällä tasolla. Lisäksi
tarkasteltiin oppilaan vapaa-ajan fyysisen aktiivisuuden ja sukupuolen
yhteyttä liikuntatunnilla mitattuun sykkeeseen.
Tutkimukseen osallistui 363 yläkoulun oppilasta ja sykeaineisto
kerättiin 14 eri koulusta ja 46 liikuntatunnilta. Liikuntatunnin fyysistä
aktiivisuutta mitattiin sykemittarilla ja vapaa-ajan fyysistä aktiivisuutta kyselymittarilla. Nuoret luokiteltiin kolmeen ryhmään vapaa-ajan
liikunnanharrastamisen määrän ja intensiteetin perusteella. Sykkeiden
analysoinnissa käytettiin seuraavia terveyttä edistävän fyysisen aktiivisuuden raja-arvoja: reipas liikunta, yli 140 lyöntiä minuutissa (bpm);
kuormittava liikunta, yli 160 bpm.
aktiivisesti liikkuviin nuoriin. Lisäksi pojilla oli korkeammat sykkeet
kuin tytöillä. Tulokset osoittavat, että liikuntatunneilla sykkeet kohoavat terveyttä edistävälle tasolle erityisesti niillä nuorilla, jotka liikkuvat
vähän vapaa-ajallaan.peerReviewe
Research lives of physical education teacher educators
.This paper aims to provide insights into the research worlds of an international group of mid- and late-career physical education teacher educators. Specifically, it explores participants’ motives for research engagement and choices, and investigates what challenges and facilitates their research efforts. Two rounds of individual in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 physical education teacher educators across 7 countries. Findings point to a distinction between research motives. Embarking on formal theses or specific funded projects was often motivated by practical and contextual drivers, such as job requirements or a wish for promotion, and was associated with feelings of frustration and stress. Motives for engaging in research in general, on the other hand, tended to be more personal or altruistic and elicited feelings such as enjoyment and passion. Time constraints, skill gaps and language barriers were all seen as challenges to research endeavours, while learning through doing, seeing and reading, and collaboration with others were seen as the main facilitators
Physical education teacher educators views regarding the purpose(s) of physical education
The aim of this paper was to gain an understanding of the views of a group
of physical education teacher educators on the purpose(s) of school
physical education and whether, how and why these views have
changed over time. Semi-structured individual interviews were carried
out with thirteen physical education teacher educators; a fourteenth
participant responded to interview questions in writing. Participants
were based in seven countries: Belgium, Finland, Germany, Ireland, New
Zealand, Switzerland and the USA. A relative consensus on the
overarching purpose of physical education was evident, centred on
physical education preparing young people for a lifetime of physical
activity. The framing of this shared purpose differed somewhat between
participants, reflecting a range of perspectives on the value of physical
activity. Delineating the boundaries of their subject, participants
characterised obesity prevention and maximising in-class physical
activity as potential by-products rather than as goals of the subject. The
views of many had changed over time, influenced by such factors as
findings from research, societal expectations and a perceived need to
legitimise physical education within school and university contexts. We
note that many of the influences acting on the views of the physical
education teacher educators are also known to affect practicing
teachers. This suggests a possibility, in the open reflection of physical
education teacher educators on the interaction between their views and
the institutional and societal contexts within which they work, to
provide future teachers with alternative value pathways paved with
relatable explanations and shared experiences
