    Dwelling or duelling in possibilities: how (Ir)relevant are African feminisms?

    In its four decades of rebirth, the world has debated (enough) the relevance of feminism, but there is, surprisingly, refreshingly emergent dimensions at the turn of the twenty-first century: feminisms from feminism flowing from Africa. The theories or models of Womanism, Stiwanism, Motherism, and Nego-feminism, with their underlying assumptions and values,were all born at various end times of the twentieth century with a common objective of seeking gender justice. This paper examines the crucial question of how relevant these models are to the global practice of woman as human. What propels their separateness, and why didn‘t they combine to make a more solid stance on the plight of the African woman? In fact, why can‘t they simply identify with the general feminism? Put differently, are they dwelling in the same terrain or are they separable and easily recognisable discourses duelling in possibilities for the woman in Africa in particular and the woman of the globe in general? More specifically, how (ir)relevant are African feminisms?In trying to answer these questions, the paper presents a critical review of the afore-mentioned theories of African feminisms with the goal of providing readers an understanding of what is new in each model, and what is similar or different between the various strands of African feminisms. The paper concludes with the author‘s analysis of the model that holds the best promise or possibilities for African feminism to achieve its seemingly elusive goal of gender equality

    Probing subtle fluorescence dynamics in cellular proteins by streak camera based Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy

    We report the cell biological applications of a recently developed multiphoton fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy system using a streak camera (StreakFLIM). The system was calibrated with standard fluorophore specimens and was shown to have high accuracy and reproducibility. We demonstrate the applicability of this instrument in living cells for measuring the effects of protein targeting and point mutations in the protein sequence which are not obtainable in conventional intensity based fluorescence microscopy methods. We discuss the relevance of such time resolved information in quantitative energy transfer microscopy and in measurement of the parameters characterizing intracellular physiology

    Nonrelativistic equation of particle with a spin for the Lagrangian on a nonassociative algebra is obtained. It is shown that in this model arises Riemann-Cartan space. In the case of central symmetry in addition to the pseudo-curvature appears torsion as pseudovector that interacts with the spin of the particle. An estimation of the influence of torsion on the strength of gravitational attraction in the central gravitational field is given.Comment: 12 page

    Thermodynamic graph-rewriting

    We develop a new thermodynamic approach to stochastic graph-rewriting. The ingredients are a finite set of reversible graph-rewriting rules called generating rules, a finite set of connected graphs P called energy patterns and an energy cost function. The idea is that the generators define the qualitative dynamics, by showing which transformations are possible, while the energy patterns and cost function specify the long-term probability π\pi of any reachable graph. Given the generators and energy patterns, we construct a finite set of rules which (i) has the same qualitative transition system as the generators; and (ii) when equipped with suitable rates, defines a continuous-time Markov chain of which π\pi is the unique fixed point. The construction relies on the use of site graphs and a technique of `growth policy' for quantitative rule refinement which is of independent interest. This division of labour between the qualitative and long-term quantitative aspects of the dynamics leads to intuitive and concise descriptions for realistic models (see the examples in S4 and S5). It also guarantees thermodynamical consistency (AKA detailed balance), otherwise known to be undecidable, which is important for some applications. Finally, it leads to parsimonious parameterizations of models, again an important point in some applications

    Improved limit on the permanent electric dipole moment of 199Hg

    We report the results of a new experimental search for a permanent electric dipole moment of 199Hg utilizing a stack of four vapor cells. We find d(199Hg) = (0.49 \pm 1.29_stat \pm 0.76_syst) x 10^{-29} e cm, and interpret this as a new upper bound, |d(199Hg)| < 3.1 x 10^{-29} e cm (95% C.L.). This result improves our previous 199Hg limit by a factor of 7, and can be used to set new constraints on CP violation in physics beyond the standard model.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. additional reference, minor edits in response to reviewer comment

    Measurement of Linear Stark Interference in 199Hg

    We present measurements of Stark interference in the 61S0^1S_0 →\rightarrow 63P1^3P_1 transition in 199^{199}Hg, a process whereby a static electric field EE mixes magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole couplings into an electric dipole transition, leading to EE-linear energy shifts similar to those produced by a permanent atomic electric dipole moment (EDM). The measured interference amplitude, aSIa_{SI} = (aM1+aE2)(a_{M1} + a_{E2}) = (5.8 ±\pm 1.5)×10−9\times 10^{-9} (kV/cm)−1^{-1}, agrees with relativistic, many-body predictions and confirms that earlier central-field estimates are a factor of 10 too large. More importantly, this study validates the capability of the 199^{199}Hg EDM search apparatus to resolve non-trivial, controlled, and sub-nHz Larmor frequency shifts with EDM-like characteristics.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 table; revised in response to reviewer comment

    Bound on Lorentz- and CPT-Violating Boost Effects for the Neutron

    A search for an annual variation of a daily sidereal modulation of the frequency difference between co-located 129{}^{129}Xe and 3{}^{3}He Zeeman masers sets a stringent limit on boost-dependent Lorentz and CPT violation involving the neutron, consistent with no effect at the level of 150 nHz. In the framework of the general Standard-Model Extension, the present result provides the first clean test for the fermion sector of the symmetry of spacetime under boost transformations at a level of 10−2710^{-27} GeV.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
