Minimal circuit for a flux-controlled Majorana qubit in a quantum spin-Hall insulator
We construct a minimal circuit, based on the top-transmon design, to rotate a
qubit formed out of four Majorana zero-modes at the edge of a two-dimensional
topological insulator. Unlike braiding operations, generic rotations have no
topological protection, but they do allow for a full characterization of the
coherence times of the Majorana qubit. The rotation is controlled by variation
of the flux through a pair of split Josephson junctions in a Cooper pair box,
without any need to adjust gate voltages. The Rabi oscillations of the Majorana
qubit can be monitored via oscillations in the resonance frequency of the
microwave cavity that encloses the Cooper pair box.Comment: Contribution for the proceedings of the Nobel Symposium on

Topologically protected charge transfer along the edge of a chiral -wave superconductor
The Majorana fermions propagating along the edge of a topological
superconductor with pairing deliver a shot noise power of
per eV of voltage bias. We calculate the full
counting statistics of the transferred charge and find that it becomes
trinomial in the low-temperature limit, distinct from the binomial statistics
of charge- transfer in a single-mode nanowire or charge- transfer
through a normal-superconductor interface. All even-order correlators of
current fluctuations have a universal quantized value, insensitive to disorder
and decoherence. These electrical signatures are experimentally accessible,
because they persist for temperatures and voltages large compared to the

Minority Stress and Leukocyte Gene Expression In Sexual Minority Men Living With Treated HIV Infection
Sexual minority (i.e., non-heterosexual) individuals experience poorer mental and physical health, accounted for in part by the additional burden of sexual minority stress occurring from being situated in a culture favoring heteronormativity. Informed by previous research, the purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between sexual minority stress and leukocyte gene expression related to inflammation, cancer, immune function, and cardiovascular function. Sexual minority men living with HIV who were on anti-retroviral medication, had viral load \u3c 200 copies/mL, and had biologically confirmed, recent methamphetamine use completed minority stress measures and submitted blood samples for RNA sequencing on leukocytes. Differential gene expression and pathway analyses were conducted comparing those with clinically elevated minority stress (n = 18) and those who did not meet the clinical cutoff (n = 20), covarying reactive urine toxicology results for very recent stimulant use. In total, 90 differentially expressed genes and 138 gene set pathways evidencing 2-directional perturbation were observed at false discovery rate (FDR) \u3c 0.10. Of these, 41 of the differentially expressed genes and 35 of the 2-directionally perturbed pathways were identified as functionally related to hypothesized mechanisms of inflammation, cancer, immune function, and cardiovascular function. The neuroactive-ligand receptor pathway (implicated in cancer development) was identified using signaling pathway impact analysis. Our results suggest several potential biological pathways for future work investigating the relationship between sexual minority stress and health
Proton-nucleus cross section at high energies
Cross sections for proton inelastic collision with different nuclei are
described within the Glauber and multiple scattering approximations. A
significant difference between approximate `Glauber' formula and exact
calculations with a geometrical scaling assumption for very high-energy cross
section is shown. Experimental values of proton-proton cross sections obtained
using extensive air shower data are based on the relationship of proton-proton
and respective proton-air absorption cross sections. According to obtained
results values reported by the Akeno and Fly's Eye experimental groups are
about 10% overestimated. The proper energy dependence of absorption cross
section for collisions with air nuclei is of a great importance for studies of
high energy cosmic rays using the Monte Carlo technique.Comment: 9pp (9 eps figures
Coulomb stability of the 4\pi-periodic Josephson effect of Majorana fermions
The Josephson energy of two superconducting islands containing Majorana
fermions is a 4\pi-periodic function of the superconducting phase difference.
If the islands have a small capacitance, their ground state energy is governed
by the competition of Josephson and charging energies. We calculate this ground
state energy in a ring geometry, as a function of the flux -\Phi- enclosed by
the ring, and show that the dependence on the Aharonov-Bohm phase 2e\Phi/\hbar
remains 4\pi-periodic regardless of the ratio of charging and Josephson
energies - provided that the entire ring is in a topologically nontrivial
state. If part of the ring is topologically trivial, then the charging energy
induces quantum phase slips that restore the usual 2\pi-periodicity.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures; v2: more references, improved phase-slip formula,
