    Development of Body Emotion Perception in Infancy: From Discrimination to Recognition

    Research suggests that infants progress from discrimination to recognition of emotions in faces during the first half year of life. It is unknown whether the perception of emotions from bodies develops in a similar manner. In the current study, when presented with happy and angry body videos and voices, 5-month-olds looked longer at the matching video when they were presented upright but not when they were inverted. In contrast, 3.5-month-olds failed to match even with upright videos. Thus, 5-month-olds but not 3.5-month-olds exhibited evidence of recognition of emotions from bodies by demonstrating intermodal matching. In a subsequent experiment, younger infants did discriminate between body emotion videos but failed to exhibit an inversion effect, suggesting that discrimination may be based on low-level stimulus features. These results document a developmental change from discrimination based on non-emotional information at 3.5 months to recognition of body emotions at 5 months. This pattern of development is similar to face emotion knowledge development and suggests that both the face and body emotion perception systems develop rapidly during the first half year of life

    Further Evidence of Early Development of Attention to Dynamic Facial Emotions: Reply to Grossmann and Jessen

    Adults exhibit enhanced attention to negative emotions like fear, which is thought to be an adaptive reaction to emotional information. Previous research, mostly conducted with static faces, suggests that infants exhibit an attentional bias toward fearful faces only at around 7 months of age. In a recent study (Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 2016, Vol. 147, pp. 100–110), we found that 5-month-olds also exhibit heightened attention to fear when tested with dynamic face videos. This indication of an earlier development of an attention bias to fear raises questions about developmental mechanisms that have been proposed to underlie this function. However, Grossmann and Jessen (Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 2016, Vol. 153, pp. 149–154) argued that this result may have been due to differences in the amount of movement in the videos rather than a response toemotional information. To examine this possibility, we tested a new sample of 5-month-olds exactly as in the original study (Heck, Hock, White, Jubran, & Bhatt, 2016) but with inverted faces. We found that the fear bias seen in our study was no longer apparent with inverted faces. Therefore, it is likely that infants’ enhanced attention to fear in our study was indeed a response to emotions rather than a reaction to arbitrary low-level stimulus features. This finding indicates enhanced attention to fear at 5 months and underscores the need to find mechanisms that engender the development of emotion knowledge early in life

    Visual Scanning of Males and Females in Infancy

    This study addressed the development of attention to information that is socially relevant to adults by examining infants\u27 (n = 64) scanning patterns of male and female bodies. Infants exhibited systematic attention to regions associated with sex-related scanning by adults, with 3.5-and 6.5-month-olds looking longer at the torso of females than males and longer at the legs of males than females. However, this pattern of looking was not found when infants were tested on headless bodies in Experiment 2, which suggests that infants\u27 differential gaze pattern in Experiment 1 was not due to low-level stimulus features, such as clothing, and also indicates that facial/head information is necessary for infants to exhibit sex-specific scanning. We discuss implications for models of face and body knowledge development

    Green genes: bioinformatics and systems-biology innovations drive algal biotechnology.

    Many species of microalgae produce hydrocarbons, polysaccharides, and other valuable products in significant amounts. However, large-scale production of algal products is not yet competitive against non-renewable alternatives from fossil fuel. Metabolic engineering approaches will help to improve productivity, but the exact metabolic pathways and the identities of the majority of the genes involved remain unknown. Recent advances in bioinformatics and systems-biology modeling coupled with increasing numbers of algal genome-sequencing projects are providing the means to address this. A multidisciplinary integration of methods will provide synergy for a systems-level understanding of microalgae, and thereby accelerate the improvement of industrially valuable strains.     Prevalence and methods of rapid weight-loss in judo athletes

    Em esportes de combate com divisões por categorias de peso é comum os atletas utilizarem da perda de peso rápida para se enquadrarem em categorias menores com intuito de lutarem com adversários mais leves e fracos. Desta forma, o objetivo do presente estudo foi identificar a prevalência e os métodos de redução de peso corporal de atletas de judô, de ambos os sexos, do Rio Grande do Sul. Um total de 48 atletas, sendo 35 (72,9%) do sexo masculino e 13 (27,1%) do sexo feminino, com idade média de 23,19 ± 6,07 anos, que eram competidores de judô no ano de 2016, responderam ao RWQL (Rapid Weigth Loss Questionaire). Quanto ao grau de influência na conduta de redução do peso corporal, para o sexo masculino se destaca a influência realizada pelo técnico de judô/sensei (55,9%) enquanto que no sexo feminino, destaca-se a influência de nutricionistas (69,2%). Quanto as estratégias para a perda de peso mais utilizadas, independente do sexo, foram a diminuição de líquidos (sexo masculino= 73,5%; sexo feminino= 92,3%) e treinar com agasalhos (sexo masculino= 47,1%; sexo feminino= 77%). Conclui-se, portanto, que foi alta a prevalência de atletas que fazem uso de diferentes métodos de perda de peso rápido em períodos pré-competitivos, independente do sexo. A maioria dos atletas fazem uso da perda de líquidos, sendo que é baixa a procura por auxílio nutricional, principalmente no sexo masculino. ABSTRACT Prevalence and methods of rapid weight-loss in judo athletesIn combat sports with divisions by weight categories it is common for athletes to use rapid weight loss to fit into smaller categories in order to fight with lighter and weaker opponents.     Using ion mobility spectrometry-mass spectrometry to decipher the conformational and assembly characteristics of the hepatitis B capsid protein.

    The structural and functional analysis of the core protein of hepatitis B virus is important for a full understanding of the viral life cycle and the development of novel therapeutic agents. The majority of the core protein (CP149) comprises the capsid assembly domain, and the C-terminal region (residues 150-183) is responsible for nucleic acid binding. Protein monomers associate to form dimeric structural subunits, and helices 3 and 4 (residues 50-111 of the assembly domain) have been shown to be important for this as they constitute the interdimer interface. Here, using mass spectrometry coupled with ion mobility spectrometry, we demonstrate the conformational flexibility of the CP149 dimer. Limited proteolysis was used to locate involvement in this feature to the C-terminal region. A genetically fused CP dimer was found to show decreased disorder, consistent with a more restricted C-terminus at the fusion junction. Incubation of CP149 dimer with heteroaryldihydropyrimidine-1, a small molecule known to interfere with the assembly process, was shown to result in oligomers different in shape to the capsid assembly-competent oligomers of the fused CP dimer. We suggest that heteroaryldihydropyrimidine-1 affects the dynamics of CP149 dimer in solution, likely affecting the ratio between assembly active and inactive states. Therefore, assembly of the less dynamic fused dimer is less readily misdirected by heteroaryldihydropyrimidine-1. These studies of the flexibility and oligomerization properties of hepatitis B virus core protein illustrate both the importance of C-terminal dynamics in function and the utility of gas-phase techniques for structural and dynamical biomolecular analysis

    Observation of associated near-side and away-side long-range correlations in √sNN=5.02  TeV proton-lead collisions with the ATLAS detector

    Two-particle correlations in relative azimuthal angle (Δϕ) and pseudorapidity (Δη) are measured in √sNN=5.02  TeV p+Pb collisions using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurements are performed using approximately 1  μb-1 of data as a function of transverse momentum (pT) and the transverse energy (ΣETPb) summed over 3.1<η<4.9 in the direction of the Pb beam. The correlation function, constructed from charged particles, exhibits a long-range (2<|Δη|<5) “near-side” (Δϕ∼0) correlation that grows rapidly with increasing ΣETPb. A long-range “away-side” (Δϕ∼π) correlation, obtained by subtracting the expected contributions from recoiling dijets and other sources estimated using events with small ΣETPb, is found to match the near-side correlation in magnitude, shape (in Δη and Δϕ) and ΣETPb dependence. The resultant Δϕ correlation is approximately symmetric about π/2, and is consistent with a dominant cos⁡2Δϕ modulation for all ΣETPb ranges and particle pT

    Measurement of the production of a W boson in association with a charm quark in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    The production of a W boson in association with a single charm quark is studied using 4.6 fb−1 of pp collision data at s√ = 7 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. In events in which a W boson decays to an electron or muon, the charm quark is tagged either by its semileptonic decay to a muon or by the presence of a charmed meson. The integrated and differential cross sections as a function of the pseudorapidity of the lepton from the W-boson decay are measured. Results are compared to the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD calculations obtained from various parton distribution function parameterisations. The ratio of the strange-to-down sea-quark distributions is determined to be 0.96+0.26−0.30 at Q 2 = 1.9 GeV2, which supports the hypothesis of an SU(3)-symmetric composition of the light-quark sea. Additionally, the cross-section ratio σ(W + +c¯¯)/σ(W − + c) is compared to the predictions obtained using parton distribution function parameterisations with different assumptions about the s−s¯¯¯ quark asymmetry

    Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections for Higgs boson production in the diphoton decay channel at s√=8 TeV with ATLAS

    Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections are presented for Higgs boson production in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s√=8 TeV. The analysis is performed in the H → γγ decay channel using 20.3 fb−1 of data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The signal is extracted using a fit to the diphoton invariant mass spectrum assuming that the width of the resonance is much smaller than the experimental resolution. The signal yields are corrected for the effects of detector inefficiency and resolution. The pp → H → γγ fiducial cross section is measured to be 43.2 ±9.4(stat.) − 2.9 + 3.2 (syst.) ±1.2(lumi)fb for a Higgs boson of mass 125.4GeV decaying to two isolated photons that have transverse momentum greater than 35% and 25% of the diphoton invariant mass and each with absolute pseudorapidity less than 2.37. Four additional fiducial cross sections and two cross-section limits are presented in phase space regions that test the theoretical modelling of different Higgs boson production mechanisms, or are sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model. Differential cross sections are also presented, as a function of variables related to the diphoton kinematics and the jet activity produced in the Higgs boson events. The observed spectra are statistically limited but broadly in line with the theoretical expectations

    Search for squarks and gluinos in events with isolated leptons, jets and missing transverse momentum at s√=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    The results of a search for supersymmetry in final states containing at least one isolated lepton (electron or muon), jets and large missing transverse momentum with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider are reported. The search is based on proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy s√=8 TeV collected in 2012, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20 fb−1. No significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed. Limits are set on supersymmetric particle masses for various supersymmetric models. Depending on the model, the search excludes gluino masses up to 1.32 TeV and squark masses up to 840 GeV. Limits are also set on the parameters of a minimal universal extra dimension model, excluding a compactification radius of 1/R c = 950 GeV for a cut-off scale times radius (ΛR c) of approximately 30
