SU(3) quasidynamical symmetry underlying the Alhassid--Whelan arc of regularity
The first example of an empirically manifested quasi dynamical symmetry
trajectory in the interior of the symmetry triangle of the Interacting Boson
Approximation model is identified for large boson numbers. Along this curve,
extending from SU(3) to near the critical line of the first order phase
transition, spectra exhibit nearly the same degeneracies that characterize the
low energy levels of SU(3). This trajectory also lies close to the
Alhassid-Whelan arc of regularity, the unique interior region of regular
behavior connecting the SU(3) and U(5) vertices, thus offering a possible
symmetry-based interpretation of that narrow zone of regularity amidst regions

Detailed analysis of quantum phase transitions within the algebra
We analyze in detail the quantum phase transitions that arise in models based
on the algebraic description for bosonic systems with two types of
scalar bosons. First we discuss the quantum phase transition that occurs in
hamiltonians that admix the two dynamical symmetry chains
and by diagonalizing the problem exactly in the
basis. Then we apply the coherent state formalism to determine the energy
functional. Finally we show that a quantum phase transition of a different
nature, but displaying similar characteristics, may arise also within a single
chain just by including higher order terms in the hamiltonian.Comment: 5 figure
Desarrollo larvario de Dagetichthys marginatus (Familia: Soleidae) a partir de puesta inducida por hormonas en condiciones de cultivo artificiales
Dagetichthys marginatus (formerly Synaptura marginata) larvae were laboratory-reared from wild caught adult broodstock as part of an aquaculture research project in temperate South Africa. A larval description for the species is provided in this paper. This work also represents the first larval description for the genus Dagetichthys, which is represented by five species, three of which occur in the western Indian Ocean. Larval development in D. marginatus is typical of Soleidae. Dagetichthys marginatus larvae are heavily pigmented, with four characteristic melanophore “blotches” on the finfold. These larvae are easily distinguished from other soleid larvae commonly encountered in temperate South Africa based on the large size at flexion (5-7.06 mm BL) and the heavily pigmented body. Laboratory-reared postflexion larvae in this study showed similar meristic counts to those of wild caught adult fish. Despite the common occurrence of mature adults of this species in shallow marine waters off temperate South Africa, larvae are absent from nearshore ichthyoplankton catches. As yet, the spawning strategy of the species is unknown.Las larvas de Dagetichthys marginatus (anteriormente Synaptura marginata) se cultivaron en el laboratorio a partir de adultos capturados en el medio natural como parte de un proyecto de investigación en la zona templada de Sudáfrica. En este trabajo se presenta la descripción de las larvas de esta especie. Este trabajo también representa la primera descripción del Dagetichthys, representado por cinco especies, tres de las cuales se encuentran en el Oeste del Océano Índico. El desarrollo larvario de D. marginatus es el típico de la familia Soleidae. Las larvas de Dagetichthys marginatus están fuertemente pigmentadas con cuatro característicos bloques de melanóforos en la aleta primordial. Estas larvas se distinguen fácilmente de otras larvas de soleidos comúnmente encontradas en la zona templada de Sudáfrica en base a su gran longitud en el estadio de flexión (5-7.06 mm BL) y a su cuerpo fuertemente pigmentado. Las larvas en estado de postflexión obtenidas en el presente cultivo mostraron similares contajes que los adultos capturados en el medio natural. A pesar de la común aparición, en aguas someras, de adultos maduros de esta especie frente a la zona templada de Sudáfrica, las larvas estuvieron ausentes en las muestras de ictioplanton recolectadas en dicha zona. Hasta el momento, la estrategia de puesta de esta especie es desconocida.
Working with simple machines
A set of examples is provided that illustrate the use of work as applied to
simple machines. The ramp, pulley, lever and hydraulic press are common
experiences in the life of a student and their theoretical analysis therefore
makes the abstract concept of work more real. The mechanical advantage of each
of these systems is also discussed so that students can evaluate their

Test of Nuclear Wave Functions for Pseudospin Symmetry
Using the fact that pseudospin is an approximate symmetry of the Dirac
Hamiltonian with realistic scalar and vector mean fields, we derive the wave
functions of the pseudospin partners of eigenstates of a realistic Dirac
Hamiltonian and compare these wave functions with the wave functions of the

Overcoming the Rayleigh Criterion Limit with Optical Vortices
We experimentally and numerically tested the separability of two independent
equally-luminous monochromatic and white light sources at the diffraction
limit, using Optical Vortices (OV), related to the Orbital Angular Momentum
(OAM) of light. The diffraction pattern of one of the two sources crosses a
phase modifying device (fork-hologram) on its center generating the
Laguerre-Gaussian (L-G) transform of an Airy disk. The second source, crossing
the fork-hologram in positions different from the optical center, acquires
different OAM values and generates non-symmetric L-G patterns. We formulated a
criterion, based on the asymmetric intensity distribution of the superposed L-G
patterns so created, to resolve the two sources at angular distances much below
the Rayleigh criterion. Analogous experiments carried out in white light allow
angular resolutions which are still one order of magnitude below the Rayleigh
criterion. The use OVs might offer new applications for stellar separation in

Effective Mass Dirac-Morse Problem with any kappa-value
The Dirac-Morse problem are investigated within the framework of an
approximation to the term proportional to in the view of the
position-dependent mass formalism. The energy eigenvalues and corresponding
wave functions are obtained by using the parametric generalization of the
Nikiforov-Uvarov method for any -value. It is also studied the
approximate energy eigenvalues, and corresponding wave functions in the case of
the constant-mass for pseudospin, and spin cases, respectively.Comment: 12 page
Fresnel coefficients as hyperbolic rotations
We describe the action of a plane interface between two semi-infinite media
in terms of a transfer matrix. We find a remarkably simple factorization of
this matrix, which enables us to express the Fresnel coefficients as a
