Sclerotherapy for the recurrent granulomatous epulis with pingyangmycin

Relapse of granulomatous epulis is common after surgery because of local irritations, hormonal level in vivo, or incomplete resection. Currently, if recurrence occurs, then extraction of the teeth adjacent to the lesion is commonly performed, which may influence the aesthetics or masticatory function. Thus, a more effective and less aggressive treatment method is urgently demanded, particularly for the recurring lesion. This study investigated the effects of the intralesional pingyangmycin (PYM) injections for the recurrent granulomatous epulis and assessed the complications. A total of 16 patients with recurrent granulomatous epulis underwent intralesional PYM injections, between July 2010 and June 2014. The effects and complications of the treatment were retrospectively reviewed. The total number of injections performed was 48 (for all patients). The median number of injections per patient was three (range, two to four). All cases completely recovered with no recurrence and resorption of the alveolar bone after a follow-up of more than 12 months. The complications included slight bleeding, local swelling and pain following injection. All these symptoms resolved 7 to 10 days after the injection. In summary, intralesional PYM injections may be a preferred option for recurring granulomatous epulis

Fluorescent supramolecular polymersomes based on pillararene/paraquat molecular recognition for pH-controlled drug release

Researchers have put significant efforts on developing versatile fluorescent polymeric systems due to their promising biological/biomedical labelling, tracking, monitoring, imaging, and diagnostic applications. However, complicated organic/polymeric synthesis or post-modification of these functionalized platforms is still a big obstacle for their further application and thereby provides clear motivation for exploring alternative strategies for the design and fabrication of easily available fluorescent systems. The marriage of supramolecular polymers and fluorescent imaging can provide a facile and dynamic manner instead of tedious and time-consuming synthesis due to the dynamic and reversible nature of noncovalent interactions. Herein, based on water-soluble pillararene/paraquat molecular recognition, we successfully prepare two amphiphilic polypseudorotaxanes which can self-assemble into supramolecular polymersomes in water. These polymersomes can be reversibly destroyed and reformed by tuning the solution pH. Attributed to the aggregation-induced emission of tetraphenylethylene groups, intense fluorescence can be introduced into the obtained supramolecular polymersomes. Furthermore, pH-triggered release of an encapsulated water-insoluble drug (doxorubicin) from the self-assembled fluorescent supramolecular polymersomes is also investigated

Deca : a garbage collection optimizer for in-memory data processing

In-memory caching of intermediate data and active combining of data in shuffle buffers have been shown to be very effective in minimizing the recomputation and I/O cost in big data processing systems such as Spark and Flink. However, it has also been widely reported that these techniques would create a large amount of long-living data objects in the heap. These generated objects may quickly saturate the garbage collector, especially when handling a large dataset, and hence, limit the scalability of the system. To eliminate this problem, we propose a lifetime-based memory management framework, which, by automatically analyzing the user-defined functions and data types, obtains the expected lifetime of the data objects and then allocates and releases memory space accordingly to minimize the garbage collection overhead. In particular, we present Deca,1 a concrete implementation of our proposal on top of Spark, which transparently decomposes and groups objects with similar lifetimes into byte arrays and releases their space altogether when their lifetimes come to an end. When systems are processing very large data, Deca also provides field-oriented memory pages to ensure high compression efficiency. Extensive experimental studies using both synthetic and real datasets show that, in comparing to Spark, Deca is able to (1) reduce the garbage collection time by up to 99.9%, (2) reduce the memory consumption by up to 46.6% and the storage space by 23.4%, (3) achieve 1.2× to 22.7× speedup in terms of execution time in cases without data spilling and 16× to 41.6× speedup in cases with data spilling, and (4) provide similar performance compared to domain-specific systems
