Modulating Image Restoration with Continual Levels via Adaptive Feature Modification Layers
In image restoration tasks, like denoising and super resolution, continual
modulation of restoration levels is of great importance for real-world
applications, but has failed most of existing deep learning based image
restoration methods. Learning from discrete and fixed restoration levels, deep
models cannot be easily generalized to data of continuous and unseen levels.
This topic is rarely touched in literature, due to the difficulty of modulating
well-trained models with certain hyper-parameters. We make a step forward by
proposing a unified CNN framework that consists of few additional parameters
than a single-level model yet could handle arbitrary restoration levels between
a start and an end level. The additional module, namely AdaFM layer, performs
channel-wise feature modification, and can adapt a model to another restoration
level with high accuracy. By simply tweaking an interpolation coefficient, the
intermediate model - AdaFM-Net could generate smooth and continuous restoration
effects without artifacts. Extensive experiments on three image restoration
tasks demonstrate the effectiveness of both model training and modulation
testing. Besides, we carefully investigate the properties of AdaFM layers,
providing a detailed guidance on the usage of the proposed method.Comment: Accepted by CVPR 2019 (oral); code is available:

Plasmonic Nanoantenna Array Design
Recently, wireless optical communication system is developing toward the chip level. Optical nanoantenna array in optical communication system is the key component for radiating and receiving light. In this chapter, we propose a sub-wavelength plasmonic nanoantenna with high gain operating at the standard optical communication wavelength of 1550 nm. The designed plasmonic antenna has a good matching with the silicon waveguide in a wide band, and light is fed from the bottom of the nanoantenna via the silicon waveguide. Furthermore, we design two kinds of antenna arrays with the proposed plasmonic nanoantenna, including one- and two-dimensional arrays (1 × 8 and 8 × 8). The radiation characteristics of the antenna arrays are investigated and both arrays have high gains and wide beam steering range without grating lobes
Systems Developers Define their Own Information Needs
Access to the right information is a significant contributor to success in many endeavors. It is, however, difficult to characterize what constitutes right information. This is an important question for systems development projects, which continue to exhibit a sub-par track record of success. This paper describes patterns of information seeking such as nature of information sought and sources of information consulted in the context of tasks performed during systems development projects. The analysis uses task-oriented information seeking as a theoretical perspective, inferring patterns from longitudinal data collected from multiple student teams engaged in real-world systems development efforts. The results show that the nature of tasks themselves varies for routine versus innovative projects, with implications for the nature of information sought and sources consulted. Some of the counter-intuitive findings include increasing incidence of genuine decision tasks over time; and use of the web for genuine decision tasks versus people for routine tasks. Implications of the findings for practice are discussed
Influence of installation deviation on dynamic performance of synchronous magnetic coupling
To improve dynamic characteristics of synchronous magnetic coupling, this paper mainly analyzed the influence of the installation deviation on the synchronous magnetic coupling’s dynamic performance used in the horizontal axis wave energy power generation device. Dynamic characteristics equations based on Lagrange equation are built in the paper to analyze the dynamic characteristic of synchronous magnetic coupling. The radial deviation, the angle deviation and the center-of-mass deviation are considered in the equation. The influence of those installation deviations on the synchronous magnetic coupling performance is analyzed based on the mathematical model. The results show that the rise time, the overshoot, the peak time, the adjusting time and the oscillation of the synchronous magnetic coupling are almost not affected by those installation deviations
A new type flexible transmission mechanism used in ocean energy converters
Traditional contact seal is usually used in rotating parts of ocean energy converters. It is hard to avoid leakage, and with the increase of working time, the leakage becomes serious, which will make ocean energy converters fail to work. In the paper, a new type isolation transmission mechanism, which is permanent magnetic coupling, replaces the traditional contact seal and achieves absolute seal of the rotating parts and longtime operation of ocean energy converters. This paper introduces permanent magnetic coupling into ocean energy converters and uses the equivalent magnetic charge theory to analyze the influence of magnet pole-pairs number on the transmitted torque of permanent magnetic coupling. The relationship between permanent magnetic coupling transmitted torque and magnet pole-pairs number is obtained. The paper is conducive to the promotion of using permanent magnetic coupling in ocean energy converters
