    Rapidity Gaps Between Jets

    An excess of events with a rapidity gap between jets, over what would be expected from non-diffractive processes, has been observed at HERA. A process based on a perturbative QCD calculation of colour singlet exchange has been added to HERWIG. With this addition, HERWIG is able to describe the number of events with a gap between jets over the number without a gap. This gap fraction is predicted to rise at large rapidity intervals between jets which would only be visible if the detector coverage were increased.Comment: 5 pages including 3 figures.     Context. Lyman alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) are used to probe the distant universe and are therefore important for galaxy evolution studies and for providing clues to the nature of the epoch of reionization, but the exact circumstances under which Lyman alpha escapes a galaxy are still not fully understood. Aims. The Trident project is designed to simultaneously examine Lyman alpha, H-alpha and Lyman Continuum emission from galaxies at redshift z~2, thus linking together these three aspects of ionising radiation in galaxies. In this paper, we outline the strategy of this project and examine the properties of LAEs in the GOODS North field. Methods. We performed a narrowband LAE survey in GOODS North using existing and two custom made filters at the Nordic Optical Telescope with MOSCA. We use complementary broad band archival data in the field to make a careful candidate selection and perform optical to near-IR SED fitting. We also estimate far-infrared luminosities by matching our candidates to detections in Spitzer/MIPS 24{\mu}m and Herschel/PACS catalogs. Results. We find a total of 25 LAE candidates, probing mainly the bright end of the LAE luminosity function with L_Ly {\alpha} ~ 1-15e42 erg/s. They display a range of masses of ~0.5-50e9 M_solar, and average ages from a few tens of Myr to 1 Gyr when assuming a constant star formation history. The majority of our candidates also show signs of recent elevated star formation. Three candidates have counterparts in the GOODS-Herschel far-IR catalogue, with luminosities consistent with ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). Conclusions. The wide range of parameters derived from our SED fitting, as well as part of our sample being detected as ULIRGs, seems to indicate that at these Lyman alpha luminosities, LAEs do not necessarily have to be young dwarfs, and that a lack of dust is not required for Lyman alpha to escape.Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures.     Editorial: Exercise as a Countermeasure to Human Aging, Volume II

    Tis impossible to be sure of anything but death and taxes (Christopher Bullock in the Cobbler of Preston, 1716). We are inclined to agree with Bullock concerning the certainly of death and in this context, aging is ubiquitous amongst humans which results in a deterioration of physiological function and an inevitable march towards death. However, physical activity and exercise are known to exert positive effects on health and wider physiological function via multiple complex and interacting mechanisms (that have not yet been completely defined). In volume II of this Research Topic, 10 articles covered the interplay between exercise and aging, utilizing approaches that spanned molecular, physiological, and population scale approaches, in both healthy older populations and certain disease subsets. This work builds on our previous work Exercise as a Countermeasure to Human Aging, Volume I and it is a pleasure to note continued progress in this field, and the range of methodological approaches authors have used

    Charge centers in CaF2_2: Ab initio calculation of elementary physical properties

    Charge centers in ionic crystals provide a channel for elementary interaction between electromagnetic radiation and the lattice. We calculate the electronic ground state energies which are needed to create a charge center -- namely a FF- and a HH-center. In well agreement with common understanding the FF-center results in being accompanied by a small lattice distortion whereas the HH-center is accompanied by a very large lattice deformation. Opposite to the common understanding the additional positive charge in the charge center results rather to be localized on a F43−_4^{3-} complex than on a F2−_2^--complex. From the ground states of the charge centers we derive binding energies, diffusion barriers and agglomeration energies for MM-center formation. These microscopic quantities are of fundamental interest to understand the dynamic processes which are initiated if the crystals interact with extreme intense deep ultra violet radiation.     Preliminary design for a standard 10 sup 7 bit Solid State Memory (SSM)

    A modular concept with three separate modules roughly separating bubble domain technology, control logic technology, and power supply technology was employed. These modules were respectively the standard memory module (SMM), the data control unit (DCU), and power supply module (PSM). The storage medium was provided by bubble domain chips organized into memory cells. These cells and the circuitry for parallel data access to the cells make up the SMM. The DCU provides a flexible serial data interface to the SMM. The PSM provides adequate power to enable one DCU and one SMM to operate simultaneously at the maximum data rate. The SSM was designed to handle asynchronous data rates from dc to 1.024 Mbs with a bit error rate less than 1 error in 10 to the eight power bits. Two versions of the SSM, a serial data memory and a dual parallel data memory were specified using the standard modules. The SSM specification includes requirements for radiation hardness, temperature and mechanical environments, dc magnetic field emission and susceptibility, electromagnetic compatibility, and reliability
