New Guarantees for Blind Compressed Sensing
Blind Compressed Sensing (BCS) is an extension of Compressed Sensing (CS)
where the optimal sparsifying dictionary is assumed to be unknown and subject
to estimation (in addition to the CS sparse coefficients). Since the emergence
of BCS, dictionary learning, a.k.a. sparse coding, has been studied as a matrix
factorization problem where its sample complexity, uniqueness and
identifiability have been addressed thoroughly. However, in spite of the strong
connections between BCS and sparse coding, recent results from the sparse
coding problem area have not been exploited within the context of BCS. In
particular, prior BCS efforts have focused on learning constrained and complete
dictionaries that limit the scope and utility of these efforts. In this paper,
we develop new theoretical bounds for perfect recovery for the general
unconstrained BCS problem. These unconstrained BCS bounds cover the case of
overcomplete dictionaries, and hence, they go well beyond the existing BCS
theory. Our perfect recovery results integrate the combinatorial theories of
sparse coding with some of the recent results from low-rank matrix recovery. In
particular, we propose an efficient CS measurement scheme that results in
practical recovery bounds for BCS. Moreover, we discuss the performance of BCS
under polynomial-time sparse coding algorithms.Comment: To appear in the 53rd Annual Allerton Conference on Communication,

Developing a method for elaboration the scenarios related with sustainable products lifecycle
This article aims at presenting our objective that is to use DfD rules
earlier during the design process. Indeed, during the conceptual design phase,
designers don't have simple qualitative tools or methods to evaluate their
products. There are guidelines that are very useful in a first approach to give
some objectives, but there is no quantitative indicators associated to these
rules to consider the disassembly aspects when the first choices are realised
for the product. So we will present that to use DfD rules during the conceptual
design phase, we first have: ?to identify which kind of rules can be applied
when designers only have a functional representation of their product. ?to
create the necessary indicators to evaluate these rules depending on designers
choices. We think that this approach is usable for many DfX rules either if we
only consider in this paper DfD rules.Comment: 10 Pages; 1st International Engineering Sciences Conference 2008,

Impact of contraception and IVF hormones on metabolic, endocrine, and inflammatory status
Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) represent commonly utilized management strategies for infertility with multifactorial causes (including genetically predisposed diseases). Amongst ART, in vitro fertilization (IVF) is the most popular. IVF treatment may predispose the mother to increased risks and complications during pregnancy, and there may be adverse fetal outcomes. Hormonal therapies, including oral contraceptives, may impair glucose and lipid metabolism, and promote insulin resistance and inflammation. IVF treatment involves administration of reproductive hormones, similar in composition but in much higher doses than those used for oral contraception. The provision of IVF reproductive hormones to mice associates with glucose intolerance. In addition, the physiological and hormonal changes of pregnancy can trigger an inflammatory response, and metabolic and endocrine changes. There is controversy regarding the potential effects of IVF hormonal therapies in the promotion of diabetogenic and inflammatory states, additional to those that occur during pregnancy, and which may therefore predispose women with IVF-conceived pregnancies to adverse obstetric outcomes compared with women with spontaneously conceived pregnancies. This review summarizes the limited published evidence regarding the effect of IVF-based fertility therapies on glucose homeostasis, insulin resistance, cardio-metabolic profile, and markers of inflammation
Performance evaluation of ductless personalized ventilation in comparison with desk fans using numerical simulations
The performance of ductless personalized ventilation (DPV) was compared to the performance of a typical desk fan since they are both stand-alone systems that allow the users to personalize their indoor environment. The two systems were evaluated using a validated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of an office room occupied by two users. To investigate the impact of DPV and the fan on the inhaled air quality, two types of contamination sources were modelled in the domain: an active source and a passive source. Additionally, the influence of the compared systems on thermal comfort was assessed using the coupling of CFD with the comfort model developed by the University of California, Berkeley (UCB model). Results indicated that DPV performed generally better than the desk fan. It provided better thermal comfort and showed a superior performance in removing the exhaled contaminants. However, the desk fan performed better in removing the contaminants emitted from a passive source near the floor level. This indicates that the performance of DPV and desk fans depends highly on the location of the contamination source. Moreover, the simulations showed that both systems increased the spread of exhaled contamination when used by the source occupant
