Critical scaling for dense granular flow between parallel plates near jamming
We numerically study the flow of dense granular materials between parallel
plates driven by an external force. The granular materials form a jammed
solid-like state when the external force is below a critical force, while they
flow like fluids above the critical force. The transition is characterized by
the mass flux. The critical force depends on the average packing fraction and
the distance between the plates. The scaling laws for the critical force and
the mass flux are predicted theoretically based on a continuum model. They are
numerically verified
Knowledge and Demand for Information about Islet Transplantation in Patients with Type 1 Diabetes
This cross-sectional
study based on self-administrated questionnaire
was conducted to investigate knowledge,
related factors, and sources of information
regarding islet transplantation in patients with
type 1 diabetes in Japan. Among 137 patients who
provided valid responses, 67 (48.9%) knew
about islet transplantation. Their main source
of information was newspapers or magazines
(56.7%) and television or radio (46.3%).
However, 85.8% of patients preferred the
attending physician as their source of
information. Although more than half of the
patients were correctly aware of issues related
to islet transplantation, the following specific
issues for islet transplantation were not
understood or considered, and there was little
knowledge of them: need for immunosuppressants,
lifestyle and dietary adaptations, fewer bodily
burdens, and complications. The experience of
hypoglycaemia, a high level of academic
background, frequent self-monitoring of blood
glucose, and the use of continuous subcutaneous
insulin infusion were related to higher
knowledge about islet
transplantation

Transparent conducting amorphous thin films in the systems of ZnO-In2O3 and ZnO-SnO2 could
be deposited on glass substrates by simultaneous DC magnetron sputtering and/or pulsed laser
deposition techniques. Post-annealing under the reductive gas flow was effective on improving
surface roughness of the amorphous ZnO-In2O3 films deposited by the sputtering method.
Introduction of Ar gas as a background gas into a chamber enabled to deposit flat transparent
conducting amorphous films directly on the substrates by means of the pulsed laser deposition.
Resistivity of amorphous ZnO-SnO2 thin films deposited by the sputtering increased linearly with
an increase of zinc content, until the composition reached Zn2SnO4. The linear decrease in
resistivity was attributable to a linear carrier concentration probably due to that the increased
number of zinc cations occupying the tetrahedral sites in the amorphous structure
A quantum homogeneous space of nilpotent matrices
A quantum deformation of the adjoint action of the special linear group on
the variety of nilpotent matrices is introduced. New non-embedded quantum
homogeneous spaces are obtained related to certain maximal coadjoint orbits,
and known quantum homogeneous spaces are revisited.Comment: 12 page
Truncated KCNQ1 mutant, A178fs/105, forms hetero-multimer channel with wild-type causing a dominant-negative suppression due to trafficking defect
AbstractWe identified a novel mutation Ala178fs/105 missing S3–S6 and C-terminus portions of KCNQ1 channel. Ala178fs/105-KCNQ1 expressed in COS-7 cells demonstrated no current expression. Co-expression with wild-type (WT) revealed a dominant-negative effect, which suggests the formation of hetero-multimer by mutant and WT. Confocal laser microscopy displayed intracellular retention of Ala178fs/105-KCNQ1 protein. Co-expression of the mutant and WT also increased intracellular retention of channel protein compared to WT alone. Our findings suggest a novel mechanism for LQT1 that the truncated S1–S2 KCNQ1 mutant forms hetero-multimer and cause a dominant-negative effect due to trafficking defect
Effects of hydrophilic polymer-coated polysulfone membrane dialyzers on intradialytic hypotension in diabetic hemodialysis patients (ATHRITE BP Study) : a pilot study
Background: Intradialytic hypotension (IDH) is a common clinical manifestation associated with poor prognosis in hemodialysis (HD) patients. HD patients who suffer from diabetic nephropathy (DN) are increasing and diabetes is a major cause of IDH. Effective interventional treatments for IDH have yet to be fully evaluated. The aim of this multicenter prospective study is to clarify the effect of biocompatible hydrophilic polymer-coated polysulfone (PS) membrane, TORAYLIGHT® NV (NV) dialyzers on IDH.
Methods: This is a prospective stratified-randomized multicenter trial. Forty DN patients undergoing HD and receiving two or more times of treatments for IDH per month were enrolled in this study. They were stratified by the number of treatments for IDH and divided to two groups using NV or conventional PS/polyethersulfone (PES) dialyzers. The number of treatments for IDH and changes in systolic blood pressure (SBP) were monitored for 6 months. Patients’ demographic and clinical characteristics were also collected at enrollment and the last month of the observation period. In order to clarify the patient characteristics that induced preferable effects by using NV dialyzers, responders were defined as the patients whose average SBP falls in 1 month improved from over 30 mmHg to no more than 30 mmHg.
Results: The total number of treatments for IDH decreased significantly in NV group, even though pre-dialysis body weight and ultrafiltration volume were similar. In addition, patients using NV had significantly higher post-dialysis SBP and the lowest SBP during HD at sixth month compared as those in PS/PES group. NV responders had valuables suggesting malnutrition and microinflammation, and better lipid profiles than non-responders. However, the representative markers related to nutritional status, arteriosclerosis, and inflammation were not improved by NV treatment.
Conclusions: NV had preferable effects on IDH in DN HD patients. Our results suggest the usefulness of NV as a possible method to deal with IDH. Further studies are needed to clarify the mechanism of NV effects on hemodynamic status
HSP47 levels determine the degree of body adiposity
Shin J., Toyoda S., Okuno Y., et al. HSP47 levels determine the degree of body adiposity. Nature Communications 14, 7319 (2023); https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-023-43080-x.Adiposity varies among individuals with the influence of diverse physiological, pathological, environmental, hormonal, and genetic factors, but a unified molecular basis remains elusive. Here, we identify HSP47, a collagen-specific chaperone, as a key determinant of body adiposity. HSP47 expression is abundant in adipose tissue; increased with feeding, overeating, and obesity; decreased with fasting, exercise, calorie restriction, bariatric surgery, and cachexia; and correlated with fat mass, BMI, waist, and hip circumferences. Insulin and glucocorticoids, respectively, up- and down-regulate HSP47 expression. In humans, the increase of HSP47 gene expression by its intron or synonymous variants is associated with higher body adiposity traits. In mice, the adipose-specific knockout or pharmacological inhibition of HSP47 leads to lower body adiposity compared to the control. Mechanistically, HSP47 promotes collagen dynamics in the folding, secretion, and interaction with integrin, which activates FAK signaling and preserves PPARγ protein from proteasomal degradation, partly related to MDM2. The study highlights the significance of HSP47 in determining the amount of body fat individually and under various circumstances
Gastric cancer treatment in Japan: 2008 annual report of the JGCA nationwide registry
The Japanese Gastric Cancer Association (JGCA) started a new nationwide gastric cancer registry in 2008. Approximately 50 data items, including surgical procedures, pathological diagnoses, and survival outcomes, for 12004 patients with primary gastric cancer treated in 2001 were collected retrospectively from 187 participating hospitals. Data were entered into the JGCA database according to the JGCA Classification of gastric carcinoma, 13th edition and the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) TNM Classification of malignant tumors, 5th edition by using an electronic data collecting system. Finally, data of 11261 patients with gastric resection were analyzed. The 5-year follow-up rate was 83.5%. The direct death rate was 0.6%. TNM 5-year survival rates (5YSRs)/JGCA 5YSRs were 91.8/91.9% for stage IA, 84.6/85.1% for stage IB, 70.5/73.1% for stage II, 46.6/51.0% for stage IIIA, 29.9/33.4% for stage IIIB, and 16.6/15.8% for stage IV. The proportion of patients more than 80 years old was 7.0%, and their 5YSR was 48.7%. Compared to the JGCA archived data, though the follow-up rate needs to be improved, these data suggest that the postoperative results of patients with primary gastric carcinoma have improved in those with advanced disease and in the aged population in Japan
